Chapter 581
"My mom was Ophelia's assistant and friend. One day, during a site check, there was an accident, and my mom died saving Ophelia."
Out of nowhere, a voice piped up beside her. Lillian turned, a bit startled to see Ambrose standing there.
He looked down at her, and Lillian realized he was explaining his connection to the Kelly family.
"Got it. You were just a kid back then, huh?"
"Yeah, I was from a single-parent family and not even five years old. Ophelia took me in with the Kelly family. To make sure no one looked down on me, she changed my last name to Kelly. She was already pregnant with Anouk but treated me like her own son. After she passed, Oberon and Flora treated me like their grandson, and I only saw Anouk as a sister."
As he wrapped up, Lillian realized he wasn't just talking about his past but also his relationship with Anouk.
So that was how it was.
Lillian thought it made sense. If Ambrose was being groomed by the Kelly family to be Anouk's future husband, they should have gotten married a long time ago.
But Ambrose really didn't need to explain all this to her.
Lillian's eyes flickered, her eyelashes trembling quickly. "Actually, I..."
Before she could finish, Ambrose smiled and said, "Actually, you still love him, and it's only a matter of time before you forgive him. You want to subtly reject me again, don't you?"
Lillian was stunned, not expecting him to be so direct, and felt embarrassed that he had seen through her thoughts.
She was momentarily speechless, and after a while, she said, "Is it that obvious?"
Ambrose raised an eyebrow, looking slightly helpless. "Because you never give anyone a bit of hope."
Lillian fell silent.
His somewhat accusatory tone made Lillian feel a bit shy, unsure of how to respond.
But Ambrose's gaze also carried a hint of friendly teasing, making her feel relaxed.
During this time, Lillian had been in great inner turmoil. She had no one to confide in and didn't dare to talk to Shirley.
Shirley had been seriously injured at the wedding because of her. What right did she have to forgive Jackson?
But feelings were always hard to control.
"If I forgive him, will it make me seem weak and pathetic?" Lillian laughed self-deprecatingly.
Ambrose thought for a moment, then shook his head with a smile.
"Forgiving takes more courage than leaving. Why would it be looked down upon? Only you can understand matters of your heart; it's not pathetic. If you forgive him, it only means the warmth and impact he gave you are enough to offset the hurt he caused."
Lillian wasn't sure if that was true, but she recalled the snowman she saw when she opened the window in Country N, the scene of Jackson appearing in the icy snow.
And how he took good care of Max, was happy to see Taylor during her prenatal checkup, and how he nervously protected her when Bob appeared.
And he said they were each other's salvation.
She had already let go of her obsession with love and no longer expected it.
But at some point, she began to look forward to the new beginning he talked about. If they could really start over, would there be a different ending?
"Thank you, Ambrose, you..."
Lillian looked up at Ambrose, her eyes clear and relieved, no longer so conflicted and heavy.
But before she could finish, Ambrose raised his hand to stop her and said, "Let me guess, are you about to praise me now? Better not. I don't accept false flattery. How about you agree to a request instead?"
"What?" Lillian was amused by his reaction and tone.
Ambrose's smile faded slightly, and he said in a clear voice, "If he hurts you again, will you give me a chance?"
Lillian was stunned, and Ambrose sighed.
"Is it that you don't have confidence in him, or do you just not like me that much?"
He had said so much, and Lillian couldn't help but laugh.
"Okay," she replied with a light smile.
"Hold on!What did you just agree to with him?"
Just as Lillian's voice fell, Jackson's familiar deep voice came from not far away.
