Chapter 720
"Jackson, what do you mean by that? How could I have intentionally gotten caught in the rain?" Star's eyes showed a moment of panic before she feigned innocence and shook her head in surprise.
Jackson smiled mockingly as he pulled up a photo on his phone and showed it to her.
That night, he had taken Star from a small village and temporarily stayed at a family's house in town. The photo was taken by the hostess of the house, who found Star's behavior odd and snapped a picture.
In the photo, Star's slender figure stood in the rain, head tilted back, making it impossible for her to deny.
"Remember now?" Jackson said coldly.
Thinking about how he had missed his wedding to bring Star back, and realizing it was all part of her plan, Jackson felt an urge to strangle her.
Jackson's gaze was like a blade, and Star's face turned pale as she tried to explain, "No, Jackson, it's not like that. I just couldn't believe I was really saved. I was afraid I was dreaming, so I ran out into the rain to feel the reality. You have to believe me!"
Star took a step forward, looking at Jackson earnestly, reaching out to touch his arm.
But Jackson sidestepped, sneering. "You really are a smooth talker. Just a moment ago, you couldn't remember anything, and now you recall your feelings so clearly."
Star wiped her tears forcefully, the wound from her broken finger glistening with tears, making her look even more pitiful. "Jackson, is it that no matter what I say now, you won't believe me? In your heart, have I become that detestable?"
"What do you think?" Jackson's voice remained cold.
Star choked up, biting her lip, and then forced a bitter smile. "The deep bond we had as children, the trust and reliance we had on each other when we were kidnapped for so many days, I thought they would never change."
Jackson's thin lips pressed tightly together. "I didn't want they to change either, but you betrayed my trust from the start. The Price Family has plotted too much."
He had given the Price Family a lot. Over the years, whenever they faced a crisis, he was the first to help.
If Star stayed out of trouble, or even just greedy for some small profits, he would have protected her for life out of gratitude.
But the Price Family wanted him to marry Star, and they probably wouldn't stop there, aiming to take over the Frane Group as well.
"What has the Price Family plotted? Jackson, you can't just pin baseless accusations on us because I love you!" Star suddenly became emotional, shouting at Jackson in grievance.
Jackson's expression remained unmoved, his cold eyes carrying judgment. "You better pray I never find any evidence."
Star was so shocked by his icy tone that cold sweat broke out on her back. Her lips trembled as she forced a sarcastic smile. "Fine, I'll wait, but that day will never come! Because it really has nothing to do with the Price Family. Star Group has expanded so quickly, and the Frane Family has stood strong in Miracalia all the time. Jackson, both the Frane Family and you have made many enemies over the years, haven't you? If one day you realize you've misunderstood me, will you regret it?"
Star stubbornly stared at Jackson.
But Jackson didn't look at her. His indifferent expression showed impatience as he glanced in the direction where Lillian was helping Lyra leave.
Jackson didn't answer, not because he agreed with Star. But because he found the question laughable.
Just the fact that Wendy's miscarriage wasn't an accident, and Star used it to lure him out of Miracalia, meant the Price Family couldn't be innocent.
He had searched for Star for years, risking his life. If he had known he would bring back a disaster, he would have regretted not giving up sooner.
Star's shoulders slumped in infinite sorrow as she saw his silence.
"Are you done talking?" Jackson's demeanor clearly indicated he was sending her away. Star remembered she had something to say. "Jackson, can HorizonHive Media handle the Star Group's tenth-anniversary event?"
The Porter Family was the largest shareholder of HorizonHive Media, but the Price Family was the second largest.
After returning, Star was fascinated by the glamour of the entertainment industry, so Dominic let her join HorizonHive Media.
Because of this, Star became friends with Bianca.
A few days ago, Lillian exposed a video online showing Bianca manipulating public opinion and slandering Shirley, causing HorizonHive Media's image to suffer greatly.
Not only did the stock plummet, but even the artists under the company were affected.
Later, HorizonHive Media held a press conference, and Bianca's father personally stated that it was all Bianca's private actions.
He also promised to fire Bianca from HorizonHive Media and made her apologize to Shirley and the public in front of the media.
They even released a scandal about a famous actor's affair to suppress the issue.
But after this incident, HorizonHive Media's reputation was damaged, and the impact was significant.
The Star Group's tenth-anniversary event would be a gathering of elites and celebrities. If HorizonHive Media could handle it, it would greatly benefit their image and business expansion.
If she could make this happen, Star could secure her position at HorizonHive Media.
Star looked at Jackson earnestly, thinking that he would always give her face as long as she asked, since it was just a trivial matter.
However, Jackson looked down at her and said in a deep voice, "Follow the company procedures. If there's nothing else, you can leave. Also, my grandmother needs to rest, so visit less often."
Star almost couldn't catch her breath. Sensing Jackson's barely restrained displeasure, she bit her lip and turned to leave.
But Star didn't expect to see Lillian coming around the corner.
In this well-lit area, Star's red eyes and tear-streaked face were clearly visible.
Star didn't want Lillian to see her in such a state. She composed herself, raised her head, and walked towards Lillian with a mocking smile.
"Lillian, do you think you've won? Do you think Jackson loves you that much? You're too naive. He just feels guilty because you lost your baby during childbirth, just like he felt guilty for me and left your wedding to rescue me." Star wanted to see Lillian in pain, but Lillian didn't even blink.
After a moment, Lillian smiled mockingly. "At least you know he feels guilty for you. But guilt isn't enough to make him marry you. I've been gone for four months, and you haven't made any progress. Besides, he seems to be starting to despise you."
Lillian's sympathetic gaze deeply stung Star.
Star retorted angrily, "Don't be so smug! Lillian, without the Frane Family and Jackson, you're nothing! If you're really so noble, stay away from Jackson and the Frane Family. Don't rely on Jackson's protection and help after the divorce, and definitely don't get back together."
Star leaned in slightly, lowering her voice in Lillian's ear. "If you're not clear-headed, I suggest you think more about your dead kid."
