Chapter 440
Jackson's breathing got heavy, his eyes locked on Lillian's cold face.
He clenched his fists, then spoke softly, "Lillian, you need rest. We can talk later, okay?"
He tried to put his arm around her, but she dodged, looking impatient. "Given the situation, Mr. Frane, don't you think our marriage is pointless?"
Jackson didn't hesitate. "No, it's not!"
He'd just realized she loved him, and he hadn't told her he loved her too.
They couldn't end it like this!
He wouldn't let it happen!
Jackson's face darkened.
His gentleness shattered, replaced by coldness and obsession in his eyes.
He stepped forward, trying to hug Lillian.
"Enough!" Lillian yelled, pushed him away, almost collapsing.
Jackson froze, not daring to move closer.
Just then, Barry, in surgical scrubs and a white coat, came quickly and supported Lillian.
Jackson glared at Barry's outstretched hand.
But Lillian grabbed Barry's arm.
This hurt Jackson deeply.
"Mr. Frane, she's been through a lot today. A pregnant woman's emotions can't be constantly agitated. If you care about her, stop pushing her!" Barry advised.
A vein throbbed on Jackson's temple. "This is between us; you're meddling too much!"
"As a doctor, I must remind you! As Lillian's friend, you missed the wedding, making her feel embarrassed. You let her down and hurt her," Barry said.
Jackson interrupted coldly, "Are you speaking as a friend, or do you have other intentions? Barry, stay out of our matters. You're not qualified! My patience is limited; don't think I won't deal with you!"
Lillian looked at his cold expression and suddenly smiled.
"Barry may not be qualified, but I am, right?" she asked sarcastically.
Lillian appeared strong, but she was weak. She held onto Barry's arm for support.
She steadied herself and turned to Barry.
"Barry, this is between him and me. Please take care of Shirley. I need to talk to him alone," she said.
Barry looked concerned but nodded and went into the ICU.
The corridor became empty and silent, with only Lillian and Jackson standing opposite each other.
A beam of light shone down, casting a crack on the ground, symbolizing the rift between them.
Lillian stared at Jackson, who was silent.
"Jackson, you abandoned the wedding, abandoned me. Why pretend now? Can't we part amicably? Can we divorce with dignity?" she asked, not understanding what Jackson was holding onto
Jackson's eyes brimmed with pain; his throat felt like it was cut by a knife, making his voice hoarse.
"Lillian, I didn't miss the wedding. I'm sorry I was late, but I can explain."
His voice was panicked, his thoughts in disarray.
Lillian lowered her eyes and smiled faintly, mocking and bitter.
"Explain? When I was eagerly waiting for the wedding, you were focused on finding Star.
"How do you explain that, when I was waiting for you to try on the wedding dress, you were on your way to see Star?
"And how do you explain that, when I was facing the wedding alone, you were on your way back with Star?
"Should I thank you for eventually coming to the wedding? Yes, you did come, but I don't need it anymore!"
Lillian found it laughable.
Recently, his mood had improved, and she thought he was as happy as she was, looking forward to the wedding.
It turned out he had found a lead on Star.
He said he was going on a business trip, and she believed him. He said he would come back and insisted on not canceling the wedding, and she had believed him.
He did rush back, but it was too late.
He had exhausted all her expectations, trust, and love.
