Chapter 848
Lillian knew that after being out cold for two days and nights, there was no way Ambrose would have just sat around doing nothing.
Ambrose's eyes darkened a bit. "You should rest first. This isn't urgent."
Lillian got that he was worried about her just waking up, still weak, and didn't want her to get too worked up or tired.
But thinking back to the terror of the car crashing through the guardrail and plunging into the deep lake, the horror of being trapped inside, watching helplessly as the cold water filled the car, the despair of being locked in, how could Lillian possibly rest?
Her lips moved slightly, and Jackson stood up, sat down beside her hospital bed, and pulled her into his arms. He looked at Ambrose, saying, "She's tougher than she looks. Tell us what you found."
For the past two days, Jackson had been by Lillian's side, not paying attention to the outside world. He had no idea what was happening with the Kelly family or what Ambrose had discovered.
Ambrose nodded. "The car's been retrieved and taken back by the police for a detailed inspection to figure out what went wrong. They'll give us an objective and accurate result. I also made sure to have someone I trust oversee the investigation."
Lillian nodded. "It wasn't just the brakes that failed. The doors and windows wouldn't open either."
Whoever did this didn't want to leave her any chance of survival.
Hearing this, Ambrose and Jackson's faces grew even grimmer.
Jackson's hand tightened around Lillian's waist, his eyes cold and hard.
"The day you had the accident, I immediately took people to Hilltop Mansion and detained everyone who was there that day. Conveniently, all the surveillance cameras at Hilltop Mansion were working fine, except Anouk parked the car in a blind spot, so there was no footage of anyone approaching the car."
"So, you found nothing? No suspicious people?" Lillian wasn't too surprised by this result. If someone were going to make a move, they would be thoroughly prepared.
Just like the incident with Taylor before, they had only found traces, never any solid evidence.
But Ambrose sneered. "We did catch someone acting suspiciously."
"Who?"
"Your former foster mother, Mary," Ambrose replied.
Lillian was stunned. She hadn't heard that name in a long time and couldn't even remember the last time she saw Mary.
She never expected that the suspect would be Mary.
After a moment, she chuckled. "They know how to find a scapegoat."
"This whole thing caused quite a commotion. The police got involved and detained Mary. But Mary's mental state isn't great. After two days of questioning, she admitted to tampering with the car. She even had a clear motive."
"She claimed you were responsible for Bob's death, which ruined her life, leaving her homeless and suffering. She said she had nothing left to lose and came back to find her biological daughter, Anouk."
"When she saw you and Anouk together, her hatred overwhelmed her, and she disguised herself as a cleaner to sneak into the neighborhood and mess with the car."
Lillian almost laughed out loud.
"Do you believe that?"
Ambrose shook his head. "Of course not. Hilltop Mansion is a high-end neighborhood with tight security. How could Mary easily disguise herself as a cleaner and get in?"
"How could she just happen to run into you the first time you went to Hilltop Mansion, and manage to sneak into the courtyard to tamper with the car while it was parked in a blind spot of the surveillance cameras?"
Ambrose's eyes were filled with disdain. If Mary were that capable, she wouldn't have been living in such dire straits, begging for a living.
He deeply regretted not ending Mary's life when he had the chance. He and Oberon had thought letting her live in misery was a better punishment.
Who knew that even in such a state, Mary could be used by someone to cause trouble in Miracalia?
"Anouk drove me to the mansion that day. Even if Mary saw us and acted impulsively, she couldn't have known I would ask Kenneth for that car. If she tampered with it, it would have only harmed Anouk," Lillian said coldly.
Ambrose nodded. "Mary claimed she only saw you and Anouk get out of the car and assumed such an expensive car must be yours. She thought Anouk, having been kicked out by the Kelly family, couldn't afford it, so she tampered with it."
Mary was indeed a good liar.
But Lillian still didn't believe a word of it. It was broad daylight, and the mansion had plenty of staff. How could Mary sneak in and tamper with the car so easily?
Besides, Mary wasn't a professional. Did she even know where the brake control system was? And did she just happen to have the tools with her?
Lillian voiced these doubts, and Ambrose sneered. "She explained how she did it. The police had her demonstrate, and she successfully sabotaged a car. She said she learned it while working as a cook at an auto repair shop four months ago."
Four months ago, Lillian had just been brought back to the Kelly family and was in poor mental health. Ambrose and Oberon were focused on her and didn't pay much attention to other things.
Ambrose had verified that Mary did work at an auto repair shop for a while before being kicked out for stealing money.
"They covered all the bases. But I don't believe Mary did this alone," Lillian said, recalling every detail of that day and feeling it was all too deliberate.
Jackson, who had been mostly silent, gently patted Lillian's shoulder. "Lillian, tell us everything that happened that day. Don't leave out any details."
