Chapter 390 Truth

Lillian shook her head and buried her face in Jackson's chest. Eventually, she asked, "Was it Star who saved you?"

"Yes. Star was born on the same day as me, but half a day earlier, so she always saw herself as my older sister. At that time, she lunged at the kidnapper, giving me a chance to escape."

Back then, Star's leg was injured, so she couldn't run fast.

They had discussed it; if something unexpected happened, it was better for one of them to escape than for both to be caught.

Only if one escaped and brought help back could the other be saved.

Even so, Jackson still felt a heavy sense of guilt.

He was a boy, but he didn't protect Star. Instead, Star used her life to protect him.

Over the years, Jackson was often haunted by nightmares.

In his dreams, Star, covered in blood, would grab him and ask why he left her, where he was when she was suffering, and why he got to live so freely and happily.

When he woke from these nightmares, the guilt didn't fade with time but grew.

If Jackson had been unable to find Star, he would have never found peace.

Jackson closed his eyes, his voice filled with guilt as he said, "I left Star and escaped."

His voice halted. Lillian felt his suppressed emotions, and her heart ached with anxiety.

She hugged Jackson tightly, stroked his face, and shook her head, softly saying, "No, you didn't. In that situation, what you did was right. It wasn't selfish. You were just a ten-year-old child."

Lillian wanted to soothe Jackson's pain, but his emotions calmed quickly.

Jackson held her hand in return, his face emotionless, and continued calmly, "Maybe you're right. I hadn't run far when I heard gunshots. Later, I managed to escape, but when I returned with rescuers to that forest cave, all that was left was a pool of blood and a severed finger. It was Star's right thumb."

As Jackson spoke, his voice carried a hint of bitterness and hatred.

He had sworn to find the kidnapper and tear him to pieces.

He also swore to find Star, whether she was alive or dead.

However, despite the Frane and Price families searching for Star for many years, there was no trace of her.

Later, the Frane family's sources found that the kidnapper might have gone to Averlake.

However, even though Jackson went there and searched for years, he still couldn't find Star.

Jackson couldn't help but clench his fist, reopening a wound on his palm.

Lillian noticed his unconscious action and quickly grabbed his hand, signaling him to relax.

The wound on his palm had been torn open, and blood stained the surrounding area.

Lillian frowned and said, "I'll get the first aid kit."

This house was decorated by Lillian, so she quickly fetched the first aid kit and opened Jackson's palm.

She lowered her head and carefully disinfected and bandaged his wound.

The atmosphere was subdued, and Lillian was still processing everything she had heard.

Thinking about Star, the girl who lost her thumb at eleven but saved Jackson, Lillian felt deeply grateful and somewhat conflicted.

Their past was so harrowing that Lillian couldn't be a part of it, leaving her feeling inexplicably lost and uneasy.

Lillian put away the first aid kit and tried not to overthink.

She held Jackson's hand to prevent him from hurting himself again, then looked up at him and asked, "Was that severed finger really Star's?"

Afraid Jackson might misunderstand, she quickly added, "I hope it wasn't true, so Star may be safe and healthy now and not meet such a fate."

Jackson patted Lillian's head, shook his head, and frowned.
