Chapter 400 Her Hesitation

Lillian stared at Jackson, surprise lighting up her eyes. She'd waited years for this wedding, and now, joy surged through her.

But right behind that joy, unease and a hint of bitterness crept in.

It felt like she'd been climbing forever to reach a perfect, ripe fruit. Now that she had it, what if it wasn't as sweet as she'd hoped? What if it was bitter?

"What's with that look? Are you scared or just not into this?" Jackson's voice snapped her out of her daze.

She noticed his gentle smile had vanished. His eyes were deep, his expression was indifferent, and his lips curled into a slight smile. He didn't look like a man proposing to the woman he loved.

Her heart, which had been racing, felt like it had been doused with cold water.

She lowered her lashes, clasped her hands, and quickly said, "We should talk to Susan first. Maybe she'll give us her blessing like you said. Besides, my belly will soon be noticeable, and a wedding dress won't look good at all..."

Jackson cut her off coldly, "No matter what you say, you still don't want to."

He didn't think that she loved him and that she just saw him as a brother whom she could rely on. Even while carrying his child, she was thinking of running away. How could she be happy about his proposal?

Jackson sneered, let go of her, and got out of bed. His departure was so decisive, leaving her feeling empty beside him.

She panicked and instinctively reached out to grab him, but she grasped nothing.

Seeing him walk towards the door, she hurriedly got out of bed and chased after him, shouting, "Jackson!"

In her haste, she didn't put on shoes and stepped on a slipper, stumbling forward in a panic.

Her face turned pale with fright, and she only had time to cover her belly and close her eyes.

But she didn't hit the floor. Instead, she fell into Jackson's broad embrace.

"Why are you running around? Don't you know your condition?" Jackson's stern voice sounded above her head.

She clung to his waist, still shaken. Calming her racing heart, she felt a wave of grievance and looked up at him with moist eyes. "Is it my fault? You got angry for no reason."

She thought, 'At the slightest disagreement, he storms out. It's his fault.'

Jackson looked down at her tear-filled eyes, feeling his anger dissipate. He said gently, "If you don't want the wedding now, we won't. I'll do whatever you want. Don't cry, or Taylor will think I bullied you again."

He gently patted her back.

Seeing her standing barefoot on the floor, he picked her up and carried her back to the bed. He knelt on one knee, brushed the dust off her soles, and then placed her feet back on the bed.

She stared at him and said as he looked up, "Jackson, it's not that I don't want the wedding. It's just..."

She wanted to tell him she dreamed of a wedding that was truly theirs.

If it had been two months earlier, or even half a month before she knew about Star, she would have been overjoyed and agreed without hesitation if he had proposed.

But now, even though she had temporarily returned to his side, the future seemed shrouded in fog, and she couldn't see clearly.

She also always remembered those old photos he had kept in the box. Jackson and Star, dressed as bride and groom, riding a horse together, laughing so happily.

Did twelve-year-old boys and girls really not understand love?

She had fallen in love with Jackson as soon as she began to understand love.

She wanted to ask him if he truly only felt guilt towards Star and not love.

But just as she started to speak, Jackson patted her head and interrupted her, "Alright, let's not talk about this. Are you hungry? Go freshen up."

She wanted to ask more, but Jackson's phone suddenly rang.
