Chapter 408 Tell Susan the Truth
Knowing Susan was mad, Lillian wasn't shocked at all.
That day, Susan flat-out refused to go into the operating room, showing her stubborn side. However, Susan's reaction still caught Lillian off guard.
Jackson hugged Lillian, gently patted her on the shoulder, and told Susan, "Susan, you're overthinking. I bought the bouquet. Lillian just helped pick and wrap the flowers to show our sincerity."
Susan lay on the bed, breathing lightly, her sightless eyes on Jackson. "Jackson, you came with Lillian today. What's this about? Just say it."
Jackson let go of Lillian, stepped forward, and bent down, holding Susan's frail hand, placing it on his finger with the wedding ring.
"Susan, feel this. I've always worn my wedding ring, and Lillian's always been by my side. She's pregnant with our child. We've decided to withdraw the divorce and plan to marry in two weeks. I'm sorry, Susan. I can't keep the promise I made to you."
Susan touched the ring, her hands trembling. She looked at Jackson with sorrow and snapped, "Jackson, I thought you'd keep your word!"
Feeling guilty, Jackson tightened his grip on Susan's hand. "Susan, I'm sorry. I can promise you anything else, but not this. Lillian and I love each other deeply and can't be separated."
Jackson turned to Lillian. Though she knew he was just trying to convince Susan, his words and gaze made her heart skip a beat. For a moment, it felt real.
Blushing slightly, Lillian clasped her hands and said slowly, "Susan, I love Jackson. He respects you like a mother. I believe you want him to be happy, and I hope you can support us."
Susan seemed completely let down. She let go of Jackson's hand, turned away, and reached out for "Star."
Jackson glanced at Adara, who quickly stepped forward, holding Susan's hand. "Mom, I'm here."
Susan clung to Adara's arm, silently crying. "Star, my poor child, I wanted to do one last thing for you, but I can't. I'm sorry."
Adara patted Susan on the shoulder and back, and under Jackson's signal, she tried to comfort her, "Mom, I know you mean well, but I'm happy just being back with you and Dad. Plus, I think Jackson and Lillian are happy together. I don't want to break up a happy marriage."
Susan cried, "You fool. You're still as kind as ever, always thinking of others. You'd rather suffer than see Jackson in pain. You gave up your chance to escape for others and endured so much. I can't imagine how you got through it. You never fight for yourself. Who will look out for you? How can I be at peace? My heart aches!"
Tears flowed from her sightless eyes, her face pale and sickly, looking especially pitiful.
Every word was for Adara, but each one hurt Jackson.
Susan's words about Star's sacrifices subtly implied that Lillian had taken what should've been Star's.
Lillian felt uneasy, worried Susan's words would make Jackson feel worse.
She looked at Jackson and saw his brows furrowed, his hand clenched tightly, veins visible.
Lillian stepped forward to hold Jackson's hand, but he pulled away instantly, leaving her stunned, her fingers curling back.
