Chapter 735
It was Jackson's familiar low magnetic voice.
Lillian was startled for a moment, moved the phone away to take a look, and realized it was an unfamiliar number.
She put the phone back to her ear, "What do you want?"
At that moment, Jackson was sitting on the office sofa holding his phone, with a simple work meal on the table in front of him.
He had no appetite, instead, he was already looking forward to the dinner he had planned with Lillian.
On the iPad on his lap were introductions and photos of the most popular couple's restaurants in New York that Terry had gathered.
Jackson's long fingers swiped the screen. He had found an excuse to discuss the dinner location with Lillian, but his fingers paused slightly.
"Why are you upset? Did I accidentally make you angry again?"
Jackson persistently asked, his worry and concern conveyed through the phone.
It seemed that in Jackson's heart, her happiness and sorrow were extremely important to him.
Lillian suddenly felt her heart sink. The extreme disappointment she had just felt towards her biological father seemed to be gently soothed by a warm hand.
She unconsciously spoke again, her voice softening.
"It's not because of you, I'm fine."
Seeing that Lillian still didn't share her troubles with him, Jackson's expression darkened slightly for a moment, but he didn't press further.
Jackson quickly opened the browser to search, and suddenly said, "I heard a pretty funny joke today, do you want to hear it?"
Lillian was a bit taken aback by his abrupt change of topic.
Before she could refuse, Jackson had already started.
"Why did the scarecrow win an award? Because he was outstanding in his field!"
Lillian was silent.
Jackson didn't hear her laugh, his brows furrowed slightly, a hint of dissatisfaction flashing in his eyes.
It wasn't dissatisfaction with Lillian, but with the jokes from the search engine.
'What kind of jokes are these? They aren't funny at all!' he thought.
He had clearly searched for the funniest ones. Stupid search engine.
He quickly scrolled down and spoke again, "I used to be a baker, but I couldn't make enough dough. Now I'm a banker and I still can't make enough dough."
After Jackson finished, both sides of the phone fell into silence.
Jackson's brows were already tightly furrowed, scrolling down rapidly, but at this moment, he heard Lillian's light laughter.
The furrow in his brows immediately relaxed, and his fingers paused.
But the next second, Lillian's teasing voice came through. "You should stop searching for jokes online; they really fall flat."
Seeing that she had seen through him, Jackson stopped searching, slightly curling his lips.
"They fall flat, but still better than your jokes."
His voice carried a smile, bringing back Lillian's memories.
It was probably around the time Jackson had just founded Star Group. He was so young and often underestimated and targeted, which made his every step difficult.
He often felt down and exhausted, which made Lillian feel heartbroken.
During that time, every day when Jackson came back, she would surround him, constantly telling him the jokes she had gathered.
But Jackson was emotionally cold, and he had a high laugh threshold.
Lillian's jokes often only made herself laugh. She would laugh exaggeratedly like a little fool, hoping to lift his spirits, but he wouldn't even give her the courtesy of a smile.
Later, Lillian got so angry that her eyes turned red.
Who knew that her frustrated and angry look would actually make Jackson laugh.
Jackson pinched Lillian's little face, coaxing her.
"Alright, alright, next time you tell a joke, I'll be the first to laugh, okay? However many teeth you want me to show, I'll show, alright?"
Lillian blushed at his pampering tone, glaring at him with a light hum.
"Then show me a smile with eight teeth right now."
How could Jackson do that?
He had never smiled that openly before, so he immediately put on a stern face and got up to grab her.
"I'd better see when you got so bold to tease me!"
Lillian was so scared that she ran off.
"Lillian?"
Jackson didn't hear Lillian speak for a long time and thought she had hung up on him again.
Jackson called her name, took the phone away to check.
Lillian was brought back to reality by his call, her heart beating a bit erratically due to the beautiful memories.
"If you don't have anything else, I'm going to have lunch now..."
She said hurriedly, but Jackson interrupted her.
"You've already unblocked me on WhatsApp, there's no need to block my number too, right?"
Lillian pursed her lips slightly, "Maybe when I'm in a better mood!"
With that, she hung up before Jackson could say anything else.
But when she looked up, she saw her reflection in the elevator wall, her face surprisingly filled with smiles.
Lillian was stunned.
The WhatsApp notification sound rang, and Lillian had a premonition, her eyelashes fluttering.
She looked down and opened WhatsApp, and sure enough, it was from Jackson.
He had sent her the location and time of a restaurant.
Thinking about the dinner with Jackson and the things she wanted to ask him, the smile on Lillian's face gradually disappeared.
She sighed lightly, closed the chat window, and didn't reply to him.
In the afternoon, Lillian and her colleague Doris went to Star Group to deliver a cooperation proposal.
To Lillian's surprise, as soon as they got out of the car, they ran into Star in the underground parking lot.
Seeing Lillian, Star immediately walked over to her.
"Lillian, what a coincidence."
Star had a smile on her face, acting as if she was very familiar and on good terms with Lillian.
Lillian admired her for that. After all, not everyone could act like Star, as if they had amnesia.
"Ms. Price, the slap mark on your face probably hasn't faded yet, right? Are you coming over for another one?"
Lillian said, shaking her wrist.
Star's face was covered with a thick layer of powder to hide the slap mark that hadn't completely faded.
Seeing Lillian raise her hand, Star instinctively took a small step back.
Facing Lillian's mocking gaze, Star stiffened, feeling a faint pain in her cheeks again.
But as Lillian was about to walk past her, Star quickly followed, walking alongside Lillian, frowning and asking.
"What are you doing at Star Group?"
Lillian was a bit annoyed, "It's none of your business."
Star raised her hand to grab Lillian, then turned to her assistant behind her.
"You go up first."
She then said to Doris, who was with Lillian, "We have something to talk about, could you give us a moment?"
Star was dressed in designer brands, wearing an expensive watch, and her attitude was arrogant.
Doris glanced at Lillian, not wanting to cause trouble, and turned to head towards the elevator.
Lillian impatiently shook off Star's hand, coldly saying, "Star, you're really something. If you fancy a man, go after him, cling to him, use all your tricks. Why are you always bothering me? Anyone who doesn't know might think you have a crush on me."
