Chapter 426
Lillian's lips barely moved, her face pale.
She thought, 'Shirley's right. What's the point of waiting anymore?'
The past two days felt like an eternity.
Before it got dark, Lillian hoped Jackson would show up any second, rushing to her, hugging her, and saying, "I'm sorry. I'm late."
But now, it was dark, and he still wasn't back.
With today's tech, the chance of an accident was slim. Plus, if the president of Star Group had an accident, it would be all over the news.
Just as Lillian was about to agree, her phone, which had been silent, suddenly lit up.
It was Jackson's special ringtone.
Lillian froze. She looked down and saw it was Jackson calling. She could hardly believe it. 'Why now?' she thought.
She was almost scared to answer.
"Pick up! Ask that jerk when he's coming back!" Shirley urged, snapping Lillian out of her daze.
She answered, almost trembling.
"Lillian, I'm sorry I couldn't make it back on time. I saw your calls. Have you been worried?" Jackson's voice, coupled with the sound of wind in the background, sounded unreal.
When Lillian didn't respond, Jackson hesitated. "Lillian? Are you there?"
"I'm here," she replied, realizing her voice was tight and hoarse.
"Do you have a cold?" Jackson asked, concerned.
Lillian found her voice, venting her frustration. "Jackson, where are you? Tomorrow's our wedding, and you're leaving me to handle it alone! Even if you're on a business trip, you can't just disappear. Do you know how many times I've called you? The worry and sadness I've felt? This wedding was your idea. How could you do this? I'm going to cancel it."
Jackson listened silently. When he heard her mention canceling the wedding, he gripped his phone tightly. "Lillian, don't cancel the wedding! I've been trapped by heavy rain in the border mountains, and the signal was cut off. I'm on my way back. I'll be there tomorrow, okay?"
His usual calm tone was now tinged with urgency and panic.
But his explanation didn't comfort Lillian. Hearing the wind and rain on his end, she took a deep breath and said angrily, "Don't rush back. The weather sounds bad. Just take care of yourself."
"Worried about me?" Jackson's voice had a hint of relieved laughter.
His laughter only fueled Lillian's anger. "I'm just not willing to deal with you having an accident while rushing back. A wedding shouldn't be rushed. Let's cancel it."
"Lillian! I said I'll be there tomorrow. This wedding must go on as planned!" Jackson's voice was deep and firm, and he immediately hung up.
Lillian held her phone, overwhelmed by an indescribable frustration.
