Chapter 48 Wendy's Hand is Broken
Lilian's palm rested against her lower abdomen beneath the table, her gaze fixed on the photograph before her. The smile that had been etched on her face moments ago was a testament to the warmth and longing she felt. As the days slipped by, her reluctance to let go grew. Apart from Max, this child was her only living blood relative. Furthermore, this was the child she shared with her brother.
"We must arrange for a hospital visit for prenatal check-ups," Shirley suggested, adopting a paternal stance. However, Lilian shook her head in disagreement. She couldn't risk it. She feared that the Frane family's influence in New York would alert Jackson to her condition.
Her plan was to divorce Jackson and leave the country as soon as possible, avoiding any further complications. Once the child was born abroad, it would be easier to manage. Even if the Frane family discovered her secret, by then Jackson would likely be married to Wendy and have a child of his own, rendering her baby inconsequential to him.
The phone on the table vibrated, interrupting Lilian's thoughts. It was a call from Jenny. Without hesitation, Lilian ended the call and placed the phone back on the table. No sooner had she done so, another call came through.
"Ugh, so annoying! Does she expect us to buy a pair of scissors and chase after her?" Shirley grumbled.
"Ignore her. You love shrimp, don't you? Have some more," Lilian advised, silencing the phone and setting it aside. To her surprise, after a brief moment of silence, the screen lit up again. This time, it was Daisy calling.
"Don't answer it. It's your mother-in-law, it must be bad news," Shirley sneered.
Lilian pondered for a moment before deciding to pick up. She had a feeling that something had transpired. Besides, knowing Daisy's temperament, if she didn't answer now, there would be more trouble later.
"Lilian, are you at Moon Mall? Go to the jewelry department on the first floor and handle the situation. I'll be there soon!" Daisy's voice was stern, and she hung up immediately after speaking.
Lilian was unsure of what had occurred, but she promptly settled the bill with Shirley and headed downstairs to the first floor. The jewelry department was bustling with people, particularly around the gemstone counter.
Shirley led the way, making a path through the crowd with Lilian in tow. Before Lilian could get a clear view of the situation, she heard a familiar cry for help.
"Wuwuwu, Master Jeffery, please spare me." It was Wendy.
"Damn it! How did a fight break out in a shopping mall?" Shirley exclaimed in shock as she reached the front and saw the scene unfolding.
Lilian also saw the spectacle. Inside the jewelry counter, Jeffery had two bodyguards pinning Wendy down while he brandished a hammer, poised to strike her wrist. Wendy was being restrained by her shoulders, her arms splayed out on a small table. Her face was a mask of terror, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Let go of me! If you continue like this, I'll call the police. The police won't do anything to Master Jeffery, but none of you will be able to escape!" Wendy threatened the bodyguards, who hesitated at her words.
Jeffery, however, remained unfazed. He climbed onto a stool, exuding the air of a petty tyrant. "Are you loyal to the Frane family or to me? Hold her tight, or I'll have you all fired!" He brandished the hammer menacingly, issuing another warning to Wendy.
"The bracelet belongs to my sister, Lilian. Who gave you the right to wear it? Don't move your hand, or I won't be able to aim properly! If you move again, it's your own fault if I render you disabled!"
As Jeffery raised the hammer, Wendy's face drained of color, and she let out a terrified scream. "Jenny! Jenny, please save me!"
Jenny stepped forward, attempting to wrestle the hammer from Jeffery while reprimanding him. "Jeffery, let her go! Can't you hear me?"
"Sister Jenny, move aside, or I'll hit you too! You were never the smartest, and if I turn you into an idiot, you're done for!"
Jenny was livid. Being a delicate young lady, she was unable to seize the hammer from the mischievous boy, and her frustration was palpable. She turned and spotted Lilian, who had just managed to break through the crowd. This sight only served to fuel her rage. She released Jeffery and charged towards Lilian.
"Lilian! This must be your doing! Jeffery listens to you the most, yet you won't make him release Wendy!"
Suddenly, a cry of pain echoed through the room. "Ah! My hand, my hand is broken!"
