Chapter 479 Run Off
The refusal to follow was too obvious.
Star frowned, thinking, 'Did Jackson just notice something?'
Outside, Jackson headed to the terrace at the end of the hallway. On the way, he bumped into a waiter with drinks.
He grabbed a glass of red wine and went to the terrace. The wind was chilly, but he felt restless.
He sipped the wine, checked his watch, and saw it was time for Lillian's performance.
Leaning against the railing, he swirled the wine and opened the live stream on his phone.
He tuned in just as the curtain rose, a faint smile on his face.
But that smile vanished instantly.
Lillian wasn't on stage. Instead, an unfamiliar face stood in her spot.
Jackson's heart sank, and details flashed through his mind.
At this moment, his phone rang.
He answered immediately, hearing Kieran's panicked voice.
"Mr. Frane, Mrs. Frane is missing!"
The wine glass shattered in Jackson's hand.
As the red wine mixed with blood dripped onto the marble floor, Jackson bolted through the door with lightning speed.
At that moment, the music in the ballroom began to play, and Star, holding up the hem of her gown, emerged from the lounge and made her way briskly toward Jackson.
"Jackson, it's time for our entrance."
With a beaming smile, she waited at the top of the stairs, watching Jackson stride purposefully toward her. Her heart raced as she reached out, hoping for his touch.
But as he emerged from the shadows, his handsome face became increasingly stern and cold, as if covered in frost, causing Star's smile to falter.
Suddenly, the lights dimmed, followed by the bright flash of spotlights focusing on them.
All eyes in the room turned up, and the romantic strains of a piano filled the air. Star instinctively forced her smile back into place.
Yet Jackson seemed oblivious to Star, the star of the evening, and brushed past her, heading swiftly down the stairs.
"Jackson! Where are you going?"
Star's voice was sharp with panic as she reached out to grab him, desperately trying to keep up. "Jackson, wait for me! Please don't make me look foolish."
But Jackson moved too quickly; she couldn't catch him, and her pleas went unanswered as he continued to rush away.
The two eventually reached the spiral staircase, but Jackson's haste left them separated, and Star was left alone under the spotlight.
The spotlight operator was left confused, unsure whom to follow as the light swung chaotically back and forth.
Jackson, meanwhile, dashed out of the ballroom, leaving Star alone in the harsh glare of the spotlight. Panicking, she stumbled and fell on the stairs, crashing down in full view of the crowd.
Gasps and murmurs erupted throughout the room.
In the crowd, Shirley, holding her phone, captured the moment with a smirk.
"Miss Price certainly has a unique way of making an entrance," Shirley remarked.
Invited by Gray as his date, Shirley had been curious to see if the evening would proceed smoothly without Lillian. Her curiosity was now satisfied, and then some.
"What's up with Jackson?" Gray asked, puzzled by Jackson's sudden and severe demeanor.
Shirley turned to him, a knowing glint in her eye. "You know the three great misfortunes for a man, right?"
Gray looked at her, puzzled.
Shirley slowly raised her hand. "Impotence, failure in life, and your wife running off with someone else."
She raised an eyebrow, continuing, "Which one do you think fits him?"?"
