Chapter 425
When Gray got Molly's call, he was sitting in the car, letting the makeup artist do their thing. "Star Group's huge; they don't mess up easily. Jackson's about to get married. Why would he go on a business trip now? Where'd you hear this nonsense?"
Molly sighed, "I wish it were false, but I heard Lillian talking on the phone to Mr. Frane. Brides get anxious before weddings and need their partners for support. This is when they need security and patience to step into marriage confidently."
Gray shrugged, "I'm not getting married. Telling me this is pointless."
Molly reminded him, "Lillian's in a bad mood. Aren't you close with Mr. Frane? Maybe you should remind him his wife needs him right now."
After Molly hung up, Shirley's angry voice filled the car. "I knew Jackson wouldn't stick to the plan! Call him and find out what's going on!"
Gray, still getting his makeup done, had the phone held to his ear by Shirley.
Shirley, frustrated, dialed Jackson's number and pressed the phone back to Gray's ear.
Gray winced at the ringing. He knew Jackson had messed up, but why was he the one suffering?
"His phone's off," Gray said, exasperated.
Jackson's call didn't go through.
Shirley angrily tossed the phone to Gray and ran out to call Lillian.
She was worried Jackson might bail before the wedding.
When the call connected, Lillian's voice had a hint of laughter. "Shirley, he said he'd be back before the wedding. Don't worry."
Lillian sounded upbeat.
But Shirley knew Lillian well; she knew Lillian often hid her true feelings. Shirley wasn't convinced. "I'll take leave and stay with you until the wedding."
With Jackson missing, Shirley, Lillian's only family, needed to be there.
Lillian agreed. "Okay."
Hearing this, Shirley felt a heavy weight in her heart.
Lillian never liked troubling others, not even Shirley.
Her agreement showed her hidden fear and vulnerability.
Jackson promised he'd be back before the wedding and told Lillian to wait. She chose to believe him.
But two days passed, and there was no sign of Jackson. He was not even reachable on phone.
He said he'd be back the day before the wedding, but he didn't show.
At night, Lillian clutched her phone, standing by the window, staring blankly at the courtyard.
When Shirley came in with a cup of hot milk, she found the room in darkness.
"Why didn't you turn on the light?" Shirley flipped the switch and walked over to Lillian.
Startled, Lillian turned and smiled. "It's already dark? I forgot to turn on the light."
Seeing her like this, Shirley felt a sharp pain in her heart, silently cursing Jackson. She placed the milk aside and held Lillian's cold hands. "Lillian, stop waiting. Cancel the wedding."
Shirley thought, 'Jackson isn't worth it. He let down someone who loves him wholeheartedly. No one should wait forever for a man like that.'
