Chapter 439
"At Lillian's graduation, you put her on your shoulders and wouldn't let her down until she said she liked you," Jackson said.
Kevin was shocked, clearly not remembering.
Jackson's glare intensified, and Kevin suddenly recalled that scene.
He frowned, anxious. "No way! You don't think Lillian and I had something, do you? That day, it's true that I made her say she liked me, but it was just sibling stuff!
"Don't you know Lillian and I never got along as kids? We always fought. She always said I was the most annoying in the Frane family. Even as we got closer, she still loved to challenge me," Kevin added, then hesitated, realizing something was off.
"How do you know about this? Did you see it? Did you misunderstand because of that?" Kevin asked.
Kevin was incredulous, but Jackson's gloomy look made him think he might be right.
Kevin felt a surge of anger, both for himself and Lillian.
"So you really misunderstood me and Lillian? For four years, you wouldn't let me come home, saying I had to achieve something first. But it wasn't about my career, was it? You just didn't want me to see Lillian?" Kevin questioned furiously.
No wonder. He finally came back, but Jackson quickly sent him off to find a base. Even when he found a good one, Jackson pointed out flaws and made him keep searching.
"Jackson, we all know Lillian loves you! She has deep feelings for you.
"Everyone knows you were injured, but she doesn't, and you kept it from her. She always drinks herself into a stupor.
"When she heard you were with Wendy and barely spoke to her for months, she was suffocated by the silence. I took her to see the stars, hoping to lift her spirits.
"But we didn't see any stars, and she ended up with a high fever, even needing hospitalization and IV drips. Lying in the hospital bed, she kept crying, 'Why can't Jackson like me, just a little bit?' She has always harbored feelings for you, and she even gave up her dreams for you, and stayed at the Peace Mansion every day, waiting for you to come home.
"Even though you ignored her for four years, she was still willing to wait for you to come back. She was so happy and expectant for this wedding, couldn't you feel any of that?"
Kevin's words felt like needles piercing Jackson's chest.
The cigarette butt between Jackson's fingers broke, crumbling into ashes and burning his skin.
But it couldn't compare to the burning pain in his heart.
Jackson's face turned pale, and his lips pressed into a bitter smile.
Yes, how could he have never noticed?
How could he have misunderstood her for so long and been so blind until now?
The experts Jackson called arrived quickly, donned their surgical gowns, and hurried into the operating room.
The surgery took six to seven hours.
Fortunately, it went well.
"The surgery was successful, and the patient is no longer any life-threatening danger. But due to the complexity of the brain injury, the patient needs to be observed in the ICU. We'll know more once the patient wakes up."
Hearing Barry's words, Lillian's tears fell uncontrollably.
Seeing all that blood, she was really afraid Shirley wouldn't make it out of the operating room.
"Thank you, Barry!" Lillian said gratefully.
"Don't worry too much. Ms. James will be out soon. The ICU doesn't allow visitors now, but rest assured; I'll personally take good care of her," Barry assured her.
Lillian nodded repeatedly.
Soon, Shirley was wheeled out and taken to the ICU.
Lillian could only see her pale face, closed eyes, and head wrapped in bandages.
Behind her, Jackson's gentle, low voice sounded with a hint of tension, "Alright, there are medical staff here. I'll carry you to get some rest; you haven't eaten all day."
Lillian slowly turned around and looked up at him.
This was the first time today she looked at him directly.
Jackson's heart pounded, feeling nervous and expectant.
But then Lillian said, "Mr. Frane, please come with me to the State Court. Today is the last day of our divorce cooling-off period; we can still make it if we go now."
Jackson's heart sank. Unlike last time when she was emotional about the divorce, this time, she was unusually calm.
And he knew this kind of calm was the most terrifying.
It meant her heart for him was already dead!
