Chapter 897
Kenneth quickly masked his dazed expression with one of deep pain.
"Lilian, how can you doubt your father like this? You're my only child, and no father would ever swap his own daughter with someone else's. How could I possibly do such a thing?"
Seeing Lilian's indifferent reaction, Kenneth turned to Oberon.
"Dad, are we sure it was Ruby who swapped Lilian? Could there have been a mistake?"
Oberon's face was stern and cold, his eyes filled with deep-seated hatred.
His voice was hoarse. "Kenneth, you don't deserve to stand in front of Ophelia's grave. Get out now!"
He didn't want to see Kenneth, let alone listen to his insincere arguments. It made him regret ever agreeing to marry his precious Ophelia to such a man. If she had married someone else, maybe she wouldn't have suffered so much.
At least Lilian might not have spent so many years experiencing the harshness of the world.
"Dad, please..." Kenneth's eyes reddened.
Oberon interrupted him sternly, "Don't call me dad!"
Oberon's chest heaved slightly, clearly angered.
Lilian quickly patted Oberon's chest. "Grandpa, don't be angry. Mom is watching over us. If she knew you were upset because of this, she wouldn't be at peace."
Jackson stepped forward and addressed Kenneth.
"Mr. Castillo, you look exhausted. You must be having trouble sleeping. Maybe you should leave and get some rest."
He gestured for Kenneth to leave.
Kenneth had deliberately waited here today. With Ruby in trouble, the Lawson family was under intense scrutiny. This morning, Nathaniel and Tobias were taken by the police for investigation on charges of embezzlement, bribery, and stealing trade secrets.
Ronan was in shock and still in the hospital.
Seeing the Lawson family on the brink of collapse, Kenneth was understandably anxious. He knew that once the Kelly family dealt with the Lawsons, he would be next.
He had hoped that his biological connection to Lilian would make her side with him, and that Oberon would show some leniency. But he hadn't expected Lilian to be so cold-hearted, completely disregarding him.
How did he end up with such an ungrateful and cold-blooded daughter?
Because of Lilian's attitude, the Kelly family, including Jackson, showed him no respect.
Kenneth clenched his fists, his gaze darkening as he looked at Jackson, frowning.
"Mr. Frane, what right do you have to stand here? As Lilian's father, I don't approve of your relationship with her. You have no place here."
Kenneth turned to Lilian. "Lilian, you and he are divorced. You should keep your distance..."
Lilian didn't let him finish. She stepped forward and took Jackson's hand.
"I brought my boyfriend here to introduce him to my mom. My grandparents have no objections, so you don't need to worry."
Jackson was taken aback by Lilian's firm grip and her protective stance between him and Kenneth.
He glanced down at their intertwined hands, a smile flickering in his eyes, his lips curling slightly in happiness.
Kenneth's face turned pale with anger at Lilian's defiance.
He had genuinely wanted to have a good relationship with Lilian, but she was far from obedient.
Whenever they spoke, Lilian would quickly become defensive, making him furious.
He felt it wasn't his fault; it was as if they were naturally incompatible.
If Lilian were as sweet and understanding as Anouk, he would have shown her more care.
But these thoughts remained unspoken. In front of Oberon and the others, Kenneth dared not say a word.
Especially in the current situation, Kenneth bit his lip, his voice trembling.
"Lilian! I'm concerned about you. Jackson has hurt you before, and I don't want him to hurt you again."
Kenneth's expression was sincere, showing deep concern and worry for Lilian.
Lilian found it amusing. She laughed, but before she could respond, Jackson put his arm around her shoulder and addressed Kenneth.
"I have hurt Lilian before, and I admit it. I will spend every day of my life making it up to her, loving her. I will never hurt her again. If you're worried about that, you don't need to be."
Jackson spoke earnestly, more serious than he had ever been with Kenneth.
Kenneth was taken aback, unaccustomed to such seriousness.
Lilian felt touched, understanding Jackson's intentions. He was speaking not only to Kenneth but also to Ophelia's spirit.
Lilian held Jackson's arm, and he looked down at her.
She smiled at him, "I believe you."
Then she turned back to Kenneth.
"Don't you think your concern and worry come a bit too late?"
Kenneth was once again stung by her words, his chest heaving.
"Lilian, you've misunderstood me. I've always cared about you, but you rarely come home. Whenever we talk, we end up arguing, and you never give me a chance to show my concern..."
Lilian found his dry explanations even more laughable.
She didn't hide her sarcasm. "So concern and worry aren't shown in everyday actions but need opportunities to be expressed? You really are a born performer. It's a shame I didn't inherit that from you. If I had, I could easily become a winner in life through acting."
Lilian's words were now dripping with sarcasm, almost accusing Kenneth of deceitfully winning Ophelia's heart through fake affection.
Kenneth's face turned red and pale, hitting his most sensitive nerve.
He was embarrassed and angry. If Oberon and the others weren't present, Kenneth would have slapped Lilian to show her how to treat her father.
