Chapter 283 Helpless

"I must go out!" Lillian exclaimed angrily, forcing her way through.

Two servants immediately formed a human wall in front of her, pleading tearfully, "Mrs. Frane, I'm a single mother. My husband is a gambler and a drunkard, completely unreliable. It's hard to find a job. Please have mercy on me."

"Mrs. Frane, you are the kindest person. My mother is paralyzed from the waist down. I can't afford to lose this job either."

Lillian fell silent.

She once had such a devilish father, and she also had an older brother who was in a vegetative state.

Lillian couldn't tell if the servants' words were true or false, but she instantly felt a deep empathy.

She had always been soft-hearted. Frustrated, she turned and went upstairs.

Lillian rushed to the study and turned on the computer, only to find that the internet was disconnected.

She angrily stormed out of the study and bumped into Cynthia, who was bringing her a fruit platter.

Cynthia advised, "Mrs. Frane, please don't go against Mr. Frane. Talk to him. He still cares about you."

"Does he care about me by locking me up? I should really thank him," Lillian cursed as she rolled her eyes and reached out to Cynthia, "Cynthia, let me use your phone."

Cynthia immediately shook her head. " I'm Sorry, Mrs. Frane. I don't have my phone with me."

"I need to call Jackson," Lillian said.

Hearing Lillian's words, Cynthia quickly pulled out her phone from her pocket and said, "My memory is terrible. The phone was in my pocket. Let me dial for you, Mrs. Frane."

Cynthia dialed and handed the phone to Lillian.

Soon, Jackson's deep, steady voice came through. "Is she behaving at home? What's she doing?"

Lillian laughed and said, "Very obedient. I'm dutifully cursing you for getting stuck in traffic, choking on water, and tripping over every step!"

Lillian spoke viciously, but before she could finish, Jackson's deep, magnetic laughter echoed from the other end.

The laughter, resonating from his chest, sent a current straight to Lillian's ear.

Lillian rarely heard him laugh so joyfully. She thought he must be mad.

She grew even more annoyed as she shouted, "What are you laughing at?"

"You are so adorable." Jackson stifled his laughter, but his voice remained slightly elevated.

He thought, 'Cursing me in such a gentle and endearing manner, it isn't harsh at all. What harm could it do? Her heart, after all, is still soft towards me.'

Thinking this, Jackson softened as well.

He continued, "The doctor said you've been too exhausted lately. Rest well at home. Tell Cynthia if you want to eat something. If she can't make it, let me know. I'll bring it home after work, or we can go out to eat together in the evening."

Jackson spoke softly, but Lillian's frown deepened. She said, "Give my phone back. Let the servants allow me out. I promise you, I won't leave for now, okay? I need to contact Shirley..."

Before Lillian could finish, Jackson interrupted, "I'll inform Shirley. You don't need to worry."

Lillian gritted her teeth and asked, "Jackson, what are you up to?"

"Lillian, I told you this morning that I wasn't a good husband before. I hope I can have a chance to make up for it during this time." After that, Jackson hung up the phone.

Lillian held the phone, feeling like her punches had landed on a pillow, growing even more frustrated.

But she remembered that Jackson mentioned a doctor.

Lillian frowned and looked at Cynthia, asking, "What did he mean by the doctor?"

Cynthia took the phone from Lillian's hand and smiled. "Mrs. Frane, I don't know. If you want to know, you should ask Mr. Frane later. If there's nothing else, I'll be going."

She handed the fruit platter to Lillian and turned to leave.

Lillian felt helpless and decided to channel her anger into her appetite. She took the fruit platter to the bedroom and slammed the door shut.

Perhaps she had been truly exhausted, so she fell asleep again in the afternoon.

When she woke, the window was adorned with a vast expanse of brilliant sunset, casting a vivid hue across the floor.
