Chapter 245 That Night, It was My Choice

"Jeffrey is sick, so I brought him here," Lillian said nervously, feeling unsure how to face Barry.

Seeing her tense demeanor, Barry didn't attempt to get closer. He said, "I've been trying to contact you recently to discuss Max's transfer, but I couldn't reach you."

Lillian pressed her lips together and remarked, "Barry, I'm worried that Max won't be able to handle the turbulence of the flight and the foreign environment well, so I've decided to keep him here."

Barry was taken aback and said, "But we agreed before. The lab in Phantom Kingdom has been all set to receive patients..."

Lillian shook her head firmly as she replied, "I don't want to trouble you, Barry. I've made my decision, sorry."

As she finished speaking and was about to leave, Barry frowned slightly and suddenly asked in a tense voice, "Lillian, do you know something?"

Lillian stopped in her tracks. Since Barry had brought it up, she wanted to clarify it as well.

She turned around and stared at Barry, asking, "Are you talking about the matter of Mrs. Hall arranging our engagement on your behalf four years ago, or the fact that the Phantom Kingdom medical facility was set up specifically for Max at your own expense?"

Her gaze turned cold. She wasn't a fool. Barry's intentions were quite obvious.

However, Lillian didn't feel honored by this. Instead, she felt offendedand uncomfortable.

Barry's expression turned slightly panicked as he took a step forward.

Lillian instinctively took a step back, unsure of how to view Barry now.

Had he been scheming all along while being Max's attending physician for over the past year?

Barry let out a bitter, self-deprecating laughter, his Adam's apple bobbing slightly before he spoke helplessly, "I've imagined many times how I would confess my feelings to you over the years, but I never thought it would be like this. It's really terrible. I'm sorry."

He spread his hands, then straightened up and said seriously, "Perhaps you thought our first meeting was when you were in the first year of high school, and I was in the third year. But actually, that wasn't our first meeting."

Lillian was stunned. She tried hard to recall but couldn't remember meeting him before that.

When Barry saw her confused expression, he took out his phone, enlarged his Facebook profile picture, and handed it to Lillian, asking, "Does this look familiar?"

Lillian took it. His profile picture was of a small orange cat, looking very cute and being held gently in Barry's large hand.

This should be Barry's cat, but Lillian didn't know why he was asking if it looked familiar. Did this cat have some connection to her?

When Barry was a sophomore, she should have been in middle school.

Lillian tried hard to recall, and a flash of inspiration brought back a memory.

One year, she found an injured little orange cat in the school woods. She took the cat to the infirmary, but the doctor wasn't there, and she encountered Barry from the high school.

Barry had helped her stitch up the cat's wound and apply medicine. She named the cat Philip and temporarily placed him in a small cardboard box, often going to feed him.

Occasionally, she would run into Barry, who also came to see the cat. She really liked Philip and wanted to take him home, but Daisy didn't like pets, so she couldn't keep him.

Later, it rained heavily, and she worried about Philip. After school, she went to see him with an umbrella and ran into Barry again.

By then, Philip's cardboard house had collapsed, and Philip looked pitiful and miserable, so Lillian asked Barry to adopt him, and he agreed.

"Is this Philip?" Lillian asked.

"Do you still remember?" Barry's lips curved slightly.

Lillian felt a bit embarrassed. She did remember, but only the cat, not Barry. Her memory of him was a blur.

"In your freshman year, we both went to learn dance from Arnold Sanders because I heard you wanted to be his student, so I went ahead and became his student first. At that time, we were both still students. I didn't want to disturb you, so I kept my feelings in secret. I planned to confess my feelings and pursue you formally once you got into college. But I didn't expect that during your senior year, I would get into a car accident and lose feeling in my legs," Barry said.
