Chapter 791

This time, she felt that Jackson was giving his all, which slowly melted the ice in her heart.

If Jackson ever disappointed or upset her, she would immediately protect herself.

Now, she had people to back her up and a way out, unlike before when she was so helpless.

Ambrose looked at Lillian, whose smile was faint but radiant, and his fingers tightened slightly around the teacup.

He had wanted to ask her about a promise she made to him a long time ago when Taylor was still around.

If Jackson hurt her again, she would give him a chance.

Ambrose wasn't sure if she would still keep that promise.

But seeing her like this, Ambrose didn't want to ask anymore.

Asking would probably be in vain, and it would only add to her guilt and trouble.

Ambrose nodded, finished his tea, and stood up first.

Lillian followed suit, and Ambrose raised his hand to ruffle her hair.

"I get it. You have a lot on your mind. If you ever feel wronged and don't want to worry Grandpa and Grandma, remember you still have a brother at home who will always support you."

Ambrose was clearly trying to make her feel better, taking a step back and positioning himself as a caring brother.

Lillian's nose suddenly tingled, and her eyes reddened. She nodded heavily. "Okay, I'll remember that."

Ambrose raised an eyebrow, smiled with satisfaction, and extended his arms. "Why are your eyes red? Come here for a hug."

Lillian smiled and didn't refuse, stepping forward.

It was a hug with some distance, but it was very warm.

Ambrose patted Lillian's shoulder and whispered in her ear, "Lillian, be happy. If he ever lets you down again, next time, no matter what you want, I won't back down."

Lillian knew he meant it.

Ambrose grew up with Oberon and Flora. If he ever decided to play the family card in front of the elders, whether to fight for himself or tear Jackson down, he could make life hell for her.

But he had never gone that far. Even now, his words, though they sounded like a threat, were more about looking out for her.

Lillian hugged Ambrose back and responded heavily.

Ambrose let her go. "Go rest, I'll stay here for a while."

Lillian nodded, said nothing more, and turned to leave.

She walked to the door but couldn't help turning back.

Ambrose had already sat back down at the tea table, his gaze penetrating the floor-to-ceiling window, looking at a certain spot in the courtyard, his profile appearing lonely and silent.

Lillian suddenly spoke, "Have you ever thought that maybe, besides liking me, your feelings for me are more about wanting to make up for regrets, and later mixed with responsibility and gratitude?"

Ambrose was slightly stunned, his gaze shifting from outside the window back to Lillian, thoughtful.

Lillian smiled again, "Ambrose, it wasn't your fault that Mom had me prematurely. I've never blamed you. I hope you can let it go soon, find your destined one, and be happy."

Back then, Ophelia had accompanied Ambrose to Miracalia for a competition, which led to her premature labor and heavy bleeding.

And from the first time Lillian was almost hit by Ambrose's car on the road, she appeared as a helpless mother with abdominal pain.

She also looked like her mother, Ophelia. Ambrose's care and attention for her were all because of Ophelia.

Lillian knew Ambrose had always blamed himself for what happened back then. He always felt that it was because of him that Ophelia had a difficult labor and bled heavily, which led to her health deteriorating.

What was even more hateful was that Ophelia's only daughter wasn't even protected and was swapped at the hospital.

All of this left Ambrose feeling guilty toward Lillian, and he showered her with attention and gifts without hesitation.

Case in point: when she returned to Seaspring Valley City, Ambrose quietly transferred over a dozen high-end properties and shops across the city into her name.

Lillian couldn't shake the feeling that Ambrose's affection wasn't genuine love but rather guilt-driven compensation.

After saying her piece, Lillian glanced at Ambrose, who seemed momentarily lost, pressed her lips together, and quietly walked away.

She went upstairs and returned to her room.

Closing the door, Lillian was about to turn towards the bathroom when she bumped into something.

It was hard yet somewhat elastic.

Very familiar, a man's chest.

Lillian gasped in surprise and looked up, still shaken.

Jackson stood in front of her.

Lillian came to her senses and scolded him angrily, "Why are you always sneaking around?"

He was always pulling this kind of stunt, and thank goodness she had nerves of steel, or he'd have scared her half to death.

Jackson, on the other hand, looked grim, his eyes fixed on the door behind her. "Do you seriously not lock your door when you sleep?"

Lillian was puzzled.

She was at home, why would she lock the door?

Moreover, Jackson probably didn't come in through the door, did he?

He climbed in through the window, and it was raining outside. The string of muddy footprints on the clean floor made Lillian frown.

Seeing her silence, Jackson leaned over and twisted the door lock a few times, locking the door for her. "You should lock up. It's safer that way."

Lillian laughed. With just her and Ambrose at home, it was obvious who the lock was meant to keep out.

Thinking of Ambrose's noble and upright demeanor just now, Lillian said angrily, "You're so petty. Do you think all men are like you, sneaking into women's windows for no good reason?"

Jackson was already feeling frustrated and anxious.

He had just left Mystic Meadows and sat in his car for a long time without seeing the lights on the second floor turn on.

Clearly, Lillian and Ambrose had been together the whole time after he left.

How could he leave with peace of mind?

His heart felt like it was being roasted over a fire, so he came back and snuck in.

"I saw everything just now," Jackson said in a muffled voice.

Lillian was puzzled, "Saw what?"

Jackson suddenly reached out and hugged Lillian tightly, his voice filled with undisguised jealousy.

"I saw you two. I saw you hug him back. Hell, you haven't even hugged me yet!" His tone was full of pouty resentment.

Like a kid who just got his candy snatched away.

Lillian couldn't help but find it funny and exasperating. She raised her hands, which had been hanging by her sides, and wrapped them around Jackson's waist.

Then...

Jackson suddenly let out a muffled groan as Lillian pinched his side hard.

Jackson let go of her, and Lillian pointed to the floor.

"It's raining at night, and instead of going home, you were lurking outside spying. And then you had the audacity to break in. Trespassing is illegal, and look at what you've done. Aren't you a clean freak? Is this something a clean freak would do?"

Lillian pressed on, and she had to admit, disciplining her annoying ex-husband felt pretty good.

No wonder Jackson used to love controlling her so much. Lillian was getting into it, reaching out to pinch Jackson's ear.
