In the early hours of the morning, Rose stumbled upon a video on a popular platform, intriguingly titled "The Most Beautiful Mermaid." She eagerly shared it with Wendy, who, upon viewing, recognized the mermaid as none other than Lillian.Wendy, intrigued, ventured closer to the screen, her curiosity piqued. She hadn't anticipated such an amusing spectacle. "Here we have the young heiress of the Frane family, moonlighting as a mermaid to make ends meet. It appears Lillian's life within the Frane family is far from comfortable," Wendy said with a smile.
Rose, seated beside her, chimed in, "Without the backing of her family and burdened with a tarnished reputation, how could she command respect? Unlike you, born into wealth and privilege."Wendy's smile widened as she leaned in to whisper a cautionary note to Rose, "Let's tread carefully this time."This time, Wendy was determined to ruin Lillian's reputation.Following her performance, Lillian exited the restaurant, her phone buzzing with several missed calls from Shirley, all made within the last half hour.Returning the call, Shirley picked up almost instantly, "Lillian, head to Duke University Hospital immediately. I've scheduled your prenatal checkup.""What?" Lillian was stunned.
"I can't explain now, just go there now. The director is breathing down my neck."Lillian had been growing increasingly anxious about her delayed prenatal checkup. She agreed without hesitation and hailed a taxi to the hospital.Despite Shirley's seemingly nonchalant demeanor, she was dependable. As anticipated, everything was arranged seamlessly.An hour later, Lillian found herself in the waiting room of the obstetrics and gynecology department. There weren't many people around, and Lillian sat nervously, her fingers entwined.Suddenly, a familiar voice broke the silence."Lillian? What are you doing here?"Lillian looked up and was surprised to see a pregnant woman standing in front of her."Lily? Are you here for a prenatal checkup?"Lily had resigned from her job four or five months ago, and her belly was still relatively small back then. It was astonishing to see how much it had grown in such a short span.Lily clasped Lillian's hand, confirming, "Yes. A relative of mine works in the gynecology department here, so I came for a checkup. Are you expecting, Lillian?"Before Lily could ask more, her name echoed through the speaker. "I'll go first and we can catch up later," she said, before hurrying off.Lillian exhaled a sigh of relief. Unbeknownst to her, in the CEO's office at that very moment, Liberty Patel, a secretary close to Lily, was examining a photo Lily had just sent her.The photo was a selfie of Lily in the obstetrics and gynecology waiting room, her enlarged belly in full view. The camera had been zoomed out to capture not only Lily but also the department sign and a few individuals in the waiting room.Liberty zoomed in on the photo, her eyes widening in surprise as she spotted a familiar figure in the corner. "Isn't that Lillian? She too left her job due to pregnancy. Why deny it and blame her husband's infertility?"A junior clerk nearby leaned in for a closer look, confirming, "It is her."Suddenly, a voice from behind startled them. "Who is pregnant?"They were startled and turned around to see Terry and quickly stood up straight.
"Mr. Terry, we weren't gossiping," Liberty explained. Terry reached out and took her phone, glanced at the photo, and handed it back."Which hospital is this?" Terry asked."Duke University Hospital."
"Send me the photo immediately."With a serious expression, he swiftly turned and quickly walked into the CEO's office.Liberty frowned as she sent the photo, puzzled that such a trivial matter required Mr. Jackson's attention.Terry approached the desk and slid the phone toward Jackson, who was engrossed in signing a contract. "Mr. Jackson, Ms. Lillian is currently at Duke University Hospital for a prenatal checkup."
Jackson's expression remained unchanged, but his hand trembled, and the pen pierced through the contract.
