Chapter 460 Fallen Apart
Shirley noticed Lillian's face harden and felt really upset.
"Miss Price, I saved them on impulse! Take your card back; I don't need it! If you want to show gratitude, apologize to Lillian. Her wedding got ruined because of you!"
Star gave a small, apologetic smile.
"I'm sorry about the wedding. I only found out later that Jackson delayed it to pick me up. I've had a tough time these past years, but I managed for sixteen years. A few more days wouldn't have mattered. Jackson just cared too much."
There was no trace of apology in her words, more of a smug sense of self-satisfaction.
But Lillian felt a surge of strength within herself, her emotions more annoyed than pained.
Seeing Star reach for the bank card, Lillian stepped in between her and Shirley.
"If this is the Price family's gesture, Shirley, you should accept it. Although the Price family seems to be struggling with its own issues, despite the complications with Wendy's baby, they insist on keeping it, which is rather commendable. Five million dollars is a trivial amount compared to the value of this child to the Price family. Wouldn't you agree, Miss Price?"
Lillian's sarcasm was clear, implying the Price family's small numbers and the child's defects were moral failures, a punishment from God.
Star, who had advocated for protecting Wendy and the child, couldn't contradict herself.
She paused, her expression freezing for a moment, then withdrew her hand from the card and said, "Please accept it, Ms. James. Our gratitude is beyond words, and it will put our minds at ease."
This meant taking the money would settle things, and the Price family would owe Shirley nothing more.
Shirley laughed. "Don't worry, Miss Price. I never hold grudges or seek to repay favors. If I accept this money today, should we cross paths in the future, I'll simply act like I don't know you and won't bother with pleasantries."
She was mocking the Price family for using their favors to demand repayment.
In truth, the Price family did have a tendency to expect some form of repayment. When they had faced problems before, Jackson's strong support and deep partnership had been crucial.
If not for Jackson's heavy sense of guilt, the Price family's situation could have been even worse. They were exploiting various business advantages and continued using this moral manipulation strategy, relying heavily on Jackson's remorse.
Star forced a smile and wanted to speak, but Lillian raised her hand to stop her.
"Shirley is still recovering and not in good spirits. I'll see Miss Price out."
The two walked outside together. Lillian closed the hospital room door and turned to Star.
"Can we talk?"
Star smiled. "Sure. I heard there's a café across the street. Let's go there."
At the café, they sat across from each other. Star stirred her coffee and smiled.
"I forgot, Lillian, you can't drink coffee while pregnant. By the way, why didn't you and Jackson have a wedding before, but now you're having one because you're pregnant?"
Lillian took a sip of water without saying anything, and then Star spoke again, "Sorry, I didn't mean anything by it. I just found it a bit strange. If you don't want to answer or find it hard to answer, you don't have to. Lillian, you might have some misunderstandings about me, but I really want to get along with you."
Lillian put down her water glass. "Miss Price, you just want to say that we didn't have a wedding two years ago because our relationship wasn't good, and now we're having one because I'm pregnant, and Jackson wants to make it up to me."
"Lillian, you're overthinking it..." Star looked very innocent.
Lillian didn't want to see her pretense and interrupted her, "Miss Price, you can be more direct. I'm not afraid to tell you that Jackson and I have already fallen apart."
