Chapter 22 You Must Have This Child!
Jackson walked into the Peace Mansion. The place was pitch dark, and he felt a twinge of regret as he stepped inside. Since getting married, he hadn't been home much, but whenever he did, the house would be lit up, and Lillian would greet him with a smile, asking how his day was. He used to think he didn't need someone waiting for him, but now he realized he hated the emptiness even more.
He pushed open the door to the master bedroom. The room was tidy, just like always, but without Lillian, it felt eerily empty. His eyes landed on the dressing table. Two pieces of jewelry lay there—a pair of earrings and a wedding ring, sparkling but abandoned.
Jackson sneered, muttering, "Women are impossible to understand." Now he knew Lillian was serious about the divorce.
Just then, his phone rang. It was Terry. "Mr. Frane, Jeffrey's condition isn't getting better. The specialist team has been called in. You should come for a detailed discussion."
Jackson rushed to the hospital and spent the night talking with the medical team. By the time they finished, it was already midnight. Standing alone by the window, Jackson's brow furrowed with worry. He hadn't expected Jeffrey's illness to be so relentless. The doctors' words echoed in his mind, casting a shadow over his thoughts.
In the dead of night, Lillian was half-asleep when her phone started vibrating nonstop. She glanced at it and saw a message from Jackson. He had sent her a photo. Opening Facebook, she saw Jackson in the picture, his rugged fingers playing with a pair of diamond earrings. The earrings sparkled alongside a wedding ring on his finger, creating a strange ambiguity.
Jackson: [I'll keep these for you for now.]
Jackson: [When do you come back? I'll come pick you up.]
Lillian stared at the photo in surprise. She thought Jackson would be furious after she slapped him and would at least stop talking to her. In the past, she would wait for him to come back to the Peace Mansion every day. He only returned a few times a year, but now that she had left, he had come back on his own. Who would believe this kind of pretense? Feeling stifled, Lillian tossed her phone back on the bedside table, pulled up the covers, and went back to sleep.
The next day, after finishing her tutoring classes in the morning, Lillian returned to her apartment, cooked a few dishes, and then went to see Jeffrey. She had the maid take care of Jeffrey's meal and went to find the chief doctor.
Lyra was in poor health, and the chief doctor must have been worried that if she found out, it would be too much for her. So he mentioned it was a common fever and flu.
Lillian pressed the doctor for more information, and only then did he reluctantly reveal the specifics. As she left the doctor's office, she bumped into Daisy rushing over.
In a rare move, Daisy nodded at Lillian and instructed, "Come sit with me at the café across the street."
Following Daisy to the café, they sat facing each other. Daisy got straight to the point, "You know about Jeffrey's illness, right? I know you overheard my conversation with Anna that night."
Lillian nodded, about to offer some words of comfort, but Daisy cut her off. "You and Jackson need to hurry up and have a child."
Lillian was taken aback. Daisy had clearly made a decision for her, and whether or not to have a child was never something she could decide on her own. Fortunately, she had had enough of this kind of life!
"I asked the doctor just now, and he said Jeffrey's condition hasn't reached the stage of needing a bone marrow transplant," Lillian said,
Since it was an emergency, there was no time to have a baby. Even if she had had a baby, the chances of a successful match wouldn't have been very high. Medicine was advancing rapidly then, and leukemia wasn't incurable, especially for the prestigious Frane family.
Daisy was completely overbearing and stubborn. "You stop right there! You must have this child!" she interrupted Lillian.
Seeing Lillian frown, Daisy softened her tone. "Don't worry, I won't let you have the child for nothing. If the child is born, I'll reward you with one billion dollars. If the match is successful, I'll reward you with three billion dollars, and each blood transfusion will be counted separately. If you conceive, I can advance you twenty million dollars."
Daisy, high and mighty, elegantly stirred her coffee, seemingly convinced that Lillian couldn't resist such a generous offer. Clutching her skirt, Lillian envisioned Mary soliciting money from the Frane family and departing, while Daisy's face wore an expression of utter disdain.
"A family of vampires! Jackson is so shrewd. How did he get played by that woman?"
"It's just twenty thousand dollars, like giving alms to a beggar."
The unbearable memories made Lillian stand up abruptly. "To be honest with you, my relationship with Jackson is broken, and we are in the process of divorcing. It's impossible for us to have a child. You're 52 this year, and you probably haven't reached menopause yet, right? If you really think a baby is needed to save Jeffrey, why don't you give it a try yourself? Some things still have to rely on oneself, don't you think?"
Lillian picked up her bag and left, leaving Daisy sitting there in disbelief. Clutching her chest, Anna, who had been waiting nearby, immediately came to the table and handed her a quick-acting heart pill.
After a while, Daisy finally recovered. "The Frane family has really raised her for nothing. Even a dog knows to be loyal to its owner! She's too arrogant, saying such nonsense as divorce just to avoid having a child!"
Lillian walked away decisively.
