Chapter 558 I Learned to Be Selfish

Bob, that bastard, got released early and even found her.

All these years while Bob was in prison, they never divorced. Now, he insisted on staying in her house, like a nightmare starting all over again.

Mary had been living quite freely these years, no longer willing to be obedient like before. As a result, Bob beat her up, and before dawn, Mary ran out.

Afraid of being found by Bob and having nowhere else to go, she came to the hospital again and vented her anger about Bob to Max. She didn't expect Lillian would let Mila record the conversation.

"Looks like you ran into him too? Lillian, you can't just ignore me. Can you ask Jackson to put him back in jail? Where are you living now? You're pregnant and have no one to take care of you. I can't rest easy. Let me move in and take care of you, okay?"

Mary rubbed her hands, pleading. Lillian replied coldly, "I don't need you to take care of me. As for Bob, he was released through normal procedures, and Jackson can't do anything about it."

"How can you be so heartless, just watching me suffer like this?" Mary shouted angrily.

Lillian smirked. "I learned to be selfish and indifferent from you. Don't you remember?"

Mary choked up, clearly remembering how she had neglected Lillian in the past, sometimes even pushing Lillian out to protect herself from Bob's anger, hoping to get beaten less.

She knew Lillian wouldn't help her, so she struggled to leave.

Lillian said, "You hit someone, so you can't leave. Now come with me to apologize."

Mary ran away; did she have to apologize to Star herself?

Lillian didn't want to take responsibility for Star's injury, and she suspected that during Mary's escape, she might have transferred or discarded the recording pen when Mila wasn't looking.

If Mary was left alone, she would definitely try to destroy the evidence.

Mary cared so much about the recording pen; it must have recorded something she didn't want others to hear. Lillian couldn't let Mary out of her sight.

Mary fought back, but Mila's grip was strong. They followed Lillian to the burn unit floor.

Star hadn't come out from treatment yet. Lillian was about to go to the hospital security office to see if they could retrieve the surveillance footage when a familiar tall figure emerged from the elevator.

It was Jackson, no longer in the white shirt and black pants he wore when he left in the morning.

He had changed into a black shirt, a dark gray suit, and a meticulously tied striped tie, exuding an air of noble excellence.

It was hard to believe this was the same man who had been wearing a pink apron, pretending to be a home chef.

Star was injured, and he had rushed over quickly.

He was taking care of both sides, showing no signs of fatigue.

As Lillian was thinking, Jackson's figure came straight to her. Before she could react, Jackson took her hands and pulled her into his familiar embrace.

His voice was urgent. "Did you get burned anywhere?"

As Jackson spoke, his eyes quickly scanned Lillian from head to toe. Seeing that she seemed fine, his handsome face darkened slightly.

"Didn't I tell you not to go out alone? Eulalia and the bodyguards are already on their way, but you went out by yourself! Why are you always so disobedient!"

Jackson naturally exuded an aura of authority; when he was stern, he could easily reduce senior managers in their forties or fifties to tears.

But at this moment, the undisguised concern in Jackson's deep eyes, and the frustration in his words that outweighed his scolding, softened his sternness, revealing a more genuine and anxious side.

It was as if she was the only person in the world to him, as if he had rushed here solely for her.

This side of Jackson was somewhat touching.

Lillian's heart was stirred, like a calm lake forcibly disturbed by a stone, causing uncontrollable ripples.

She pressed her lips together and replied, "I'm fine, let go of me first."

Daisy saw this scene and frowned.

Jackson didn't let go of Lillian, holding her as he responded to Daisy. "I remember I called to say that Star got burned saving Lillian, not that Lillian was hurt! Star is still in there being treated, and she fainted. She hasn't come out yet. Are you sure you're not concerned about the wrong person?"
