Chapter 26 The Key Lies in the Seed

Lillian watched as he switched back to his cold demeanor, a stark contrast to how gentle he was with Lyra. She couldn't help but chuckle bitterly, thinking about his earlier words.

She really was foolish to keep hoping.

With a cold expression, Lillian snapped, "I was just on the phone with my senior brother. Didn't you hear?"

"Is that so?" Jackson's voice dripped with skepticism, a chill radiating from him.

"Don't stand so close to me," Lillian said, struggling to breathe.

Jackson thought of that night when she and Barry were pressed together in the car. Instead of backing off, he bent his legs and pressed his body against hers, pinning her between the wall and himself.

"Still thinking about Barry?" Jackson asked, knowing exactly what was on Barry's mind.

"Barry called to tell me that Max's condition is stable," Lillian said, trying to keep her secret plans to study abroad hidden. Jackson hadn't even agreed to a divorce, let alone her studying abroad. But she was determined and wouldn't be swayed.

Jackson knew her too well, even when she lied.

He sneered. "I'll arrange a new attending physician for Max."

It was a statement, not a discussion. Jackson ended the topic and moved to open the door.

Desperate, Lillian grabbed his arm. "We're getting a divorce. I don't want to trouble you anymore."

"Have you forgotten what you promised Lyra just now?"

Lillian sneered. "That was just to deceive Grandma. If I don't divorce you, I'm afraid the stress will make me sick!"

"Lillian! Say that again!" Jackson's face darkened, looking like he wanted to strangle her.

With a cold heart, Lillian suddenly stomped hard on Jackson’s foot while he was distracted.

Taking advantage of his momentary pain, Lillian slipped away from him.

At the dining table, Jackson sat down next to Lillian with a stern face, and Lyra glared at him, clearly displeased.

"Who are you scowling at with that sour face? Hurry up and serve your wife a bowl of soup."

"Grandma, she doesn't want me to bother her," Jackson said, raising an eyebrow at Lillian. "Right, Mrs. Frane?"

Everyone's attention turned to them, but Lillian didn't want Jackson serving her soup.

She stood up. "Let me serve Grandma instead."

In the past, Lillian would have timidly served soup to everyone to please them. But today, she only served soup to Lyra, whom she respected. Daisy couldn't resist mocking her, "Looks like we're not worthy of this soup."

Lyra shot her a glare. "If you want soup, serve yourself. Jackson's lack of skills is all your doing."

Daisy's face turned sour.

Lyra continued, "Jackson, Lillian grew up under my care. Which of those flashy women outside can compare? She is my lifesaver! Don't let her down!"

When Lillian was five, Wade Sivan brought her to visit the Frane Mansion. Lyra fainted from a heart attack in the deserted flower house, and the heavy wooden door accidentally locked by a servant. It was Lillian's frantic banging on the door and shouting that alerted someone, saving Lyra in time.

Later, everyone discovered that Lillian's delicate hands were red and swollen from banging, and her voice was almost hoarse from shouting.

It was also because of this incident that Max had no choice but to beg the Frane family to take them in.

"Mom, that's all in the past. Besides, didn't the Frane family raise her? You can't always be biased. Having children depends on whether a woman can successfully conceive. I've spent the past two years taking care of Lillian, but she is neither grateful nor cooperative. How can you blame Jackson?"

Lyra's face darkened. "The key lies in the seed. As long as the seed is good, even a desert can bloom into an oasis! In the end, it's still about men being useless!"
