Chapter 903
Lillian never expected Ruby to bring up Taylor at a time like this.
During Miracalia's interrogation of Anouk, Anouk was on the verge of breaking under the relentless questioning and was about to point the finger at Ruby.
But just then, a police officer entered the interrogation room to give Anouk a glass of water, and Anouk immediately changed her attitude.
Afterward, Jackson had someone keep a close watch on that young officer.
It was later discovered that the officer was acting under the orders of the warden, who had released Bob.
The warden had been transferred from Seaspring Valley City and was suspended and investigated after Ruby was arrested.
He confessed that releasing Bob was indeed done under Ruby's bribery and instructions.
At the same time, he was also helping Ruby find a suitable kidney donor from the prison to save her life in case of an emergency.
Before being transferred to Miracalia, he had worked at the police station and had done several illegal favors for Ruby under her bribery.
Thinking about all this, Lillian's heart surged with hatred.
Her eyes were sharp as knives. "Ruby, how dare you mention Taylor! You orchestrated his death by colluding with the Price family! You don't deserve to speak his name!"
Lillian's emotions once again spiraled out of control, filled with anger and resentment.
Thinking of Taylor, Lillian wished she had a knife in her hand right now to personally end Ruby.
Ruby, however, remained expressionless, even curling her lips indifferently.
"Lillian, you shouldn't make false accusations. I merely pulled some strings to get Bob released early. I did it out of a sudden pang of conscience, wanting to compensate him for replacing his daughter. I never instructed Bob to kidnap you."
Lillian sneered, but didn't want to argue with Ruby anymore.
Ruby was saying this now, thinking that with Bob dead, there was no evidence left.
But the warden had prepared for this, keeping recordings and chat screenshots of his transactions with Ruby.
Those alone would make it impossible for Ruby to escape her crimes easily.
Even though Lillian knew Ruby would eventually face the punishment she deserved, she was still so agitated that her hands and feet felt cold, and her spine trembled.
Jackson knew all too well that Taylor was a sore spot for Lillian, one that no one could touch, especially not Ruby, the main culprit.
Jackson wrapped his large hand around Lillian, gently patting her thin back, and spoke softly.
"Why get angry with someone who's at the end of their rope?"
Jackson's voice was soothing, meant to calm her.
However, his gaze fell on Ruby, filled with an icy chill.
Ruby felt like she was being watched by a predator, ready to be torn apart at any moment.
Her face turned pale, cold sweat forming on her forehead, but she clenched her palms tightly to hold on.
She knew she couldn't lose her composure now; this was her last chance.
"I'm fine. You're right. Why should I bother with someone who's about to die? She'll soon be apologizing to Taylor on the other side."
Lillian stared at Ruby, her lips curling slightly.
Ruby suddenly laughed and said, "Don't worry, what you said won't happen."
Ruby spoke with certainty.
Lillian frowned slightly. What did Ruby mean by that?
Was she confident that she would be lightly sentenced and not die soon?
Or did her words have another meaning?
Jackson's eyes narrowed for a moment. He had been calm and unhurried, not rushing to respond to Ruby.
But now, his grip on Lillian tightened slightly, and he spoke in a deep voice.
"Ruby, lay your cards on the table."
Ruby's previously relaxed posture tensed up, her back straightening. She swallowed before speaking.
"I know something about that child, but I can't tell you now. I can guarantee that this information is worth letting me go."
Lillian's breathing quickened, her brows furrowing.
Her heart raced, something flashed in her mind, but she couldn't grasp it.
"Ruby, do you think I'll give you a chance to lie?" Jackson raised an eyebrow coldly.
Just mentioning Taylor and saying the information was valuable, she expected them to let her go?
Ruby wasn't in a hurry. She spread her hands.
"Mr. Frane, are you afraid I'll trick you? I'm already at this point; you could crush me like an ant. Are you worried I'll pull some stunt? I don't need you to let me out; just write a letter of understanding and bring a lawyer here. I'll tell you the information. If you think it's not worth it, you can still refuse to let the lawyer defend me, right?"
Ruby leaned back, a relaxed and confident smile on her face.
She could see Jackson's concern and Lillian's tension.
She knew they would agree to her request.
Lillian couldn't stand Ruby's smug look.
She grabbed Jackson and said, "Ignore her. Let her take her secret to the grave!"
Lillian looked at Ruby, "Stop dreaming. We're not writing any letter of understanding, and you won't get a light sentence."
Lillian laughed mockingly.
"Besides, your kidneys are failing. Whether you're heavily or lightly sentenced, does it make a difference? Ruby, you don't think you can get a kidney transplant in prison, do you? You're destined to die there."
Lillian finished speaking and pulled Jackson to leave.
She couldn't stand Ruby's smugness and wanted to provoke her into revealing her cards.
Ruby watched them about to leave, her expression turning anxious and panicked.
She stood up abruptly, staring at Lillian's back, her eyes bloodshot, and shouted.
"Lillian, you're foolish! You'll regret this! You'll definitely regret this!"
Lillian saw her panic but didn't turn back.
She thought Ruby would break, but she underestimated her.
Ruby was indeed a master of endurance, able to maintain her facade for decades.
Lillian and Jackson walked out, and Ruby didn't call after them.
Lillian even heard Ruby turning to call for the police.
Then came the sound of Ruby being led away through another door.
Lillian glanced back, her brows furrowing tighter.
Clearly, she and Jackson couldn't go back to negotiate with Ruby now. If they did, Ruby would only raise her price.
But what was the important information Ruby had about Taylor?
Seeing her anxiety, Jackson's large hand stroked Lillian's back, holding her close, and he kissed her forehead.
Lillian looked up at him, "Did I underestimate her? Did I mess things up?"
Jackson's lips curved slightly. "Not at all. She only has this last card left, her life. No matter how you acted, she wouldn't have told us."
Lillian sighed. "But what does she know? And it's about Taylor."
Her brows furrowed even tighter. She couldn't figure it out.
What could there be about Taylor that she and Jackson didn't already know?
Hadn't they already uncovered everything?
That day, it was Ruby who orchestrated the murder, with the Price family carrying out the plan and using Daisy as a scapegoat.
Could there be more to the story?
Lillian's mind was a tangled mess; the more she tried to clear her thoughts, the more confused she became.
Jackson's warm fingers touched her brow, his thumb gently smoothing out her furrowed brows, comforting her.
"Don't worry about it. I'll find a way to make her talk."
Lillian had no clear thoughts at the moment. She looked into Jackson's gentle, deep eyes and nodded.
But as they left the police station, her mind was clearly still affected by Ruby, remaining silent.
Jackson held her hand tightly, silently accompanying and comforting her.
His expression was somber as he dropped Lillian off at the Kelly Manor and quickly left.
Back at the hotel, he called Harry and instructed him.
"Find out Ruby's secret, and also bring me all the previous investigation files about Taylor."
Harry was slightly taken aback. About Taylor?
They had already investigated thoroughly and knew who was responsible for Taylor's death. What was Jackson suspecting now?
Harry was puzzled, but seeing Jackson's stern expression, he simply nodded and didn't ask further.
He quickly gathered the investigation files and handed them to Jackson before leaving the room.
Jackson opened the thick file folder, which contained testimonies, photos, and a USB drive with interrogation videos.
He had reviewed these materials many times before.
Each time he looked at them, his heart felt heavy, but he still went through them repeatedly.
It was as if these documents were proof that Taylor, their child, had truly existed in this world.
Jackson once again opened the thick files. All the doctors and nurses involved in the surgery that day had been interrogated.
Besides them, other nurses and doctors on duty that day had also been questioned.
Jackson meticulously reviewed the files again, not missing a single detail.
He had a bold idea in his mind, hoping to find evidence to support it.
...This night, in the detention center, it was lights-out time.
Ruby lay on the hard bunk bed, unable to sleep.
She was exhausted. She hadn't been allowed to sleep for the past two days due to continuous interrogations.
Her head throbbed, her body couldn't take it, and she was in pain all over. But when she closed her eyes, she was filled with unwillingness and anxiety, unable to sleep.
Her breathing grew heavier, and the feeling of chest tightness became more pronounced. She suddenly started coughing violently.
Ruby's trembling hand reached for the medicine bottle by her pillow. She had declared her illness, and the police had specially brought her the medicine.
Ruby shakily opened the bottle.
Just as she poured out two pills to take, a shadow suddenly flashed by.
Before Ruby could react, the medicine bottle and pills were knocked to the ground.
Ruby was in so much pain she felt like she was dying, nauseous and dizzy, extremely short of breath, unable to think clearly.
She instinctively rolled off the bed, fumbling to grab the scattered pills on the floor.
However, before she could reach them, a foot kicked the pills away.
Ruby, like a desperate animal, crawled on the ground, making wheezing sounds like an old bellows.
Finally, she managed to grab a pill, clutching it tightly.
Her nails scraped the floor, drawing blood, but she didn't care. Just as she raised her hand, the malicious foot stomped on her hand.
Her hand hurt, and she let go, the foot pressing down hard, crushing the pill into powder along with her hand.
Ruby felt a wave of despair, opening her mouth to scream for help.
Someone grabbed her from behind, covering her mouth tightly, while punches and kicks rained down on her.
Ruby protected her head, curling up, enduring the pain and humiliation.
Until she lay limp on the ground like a dead dog, convulsing, unable to even scream, someone grabbed her hair, lifting her face, and whispered harshly.
"If you want to live, you know what to say!"
Ruby's ears buzzed, struggling to hear clearly.
She gasped, her teeth chattering, and after a while, she whispered.
"I... If you want me to talk, you... have to agree to my conditions. Otherwise, I'll die before I say anything..."
Before she finished speaking, another wave of pain hit her.
Hotel.
It was late at night, but the lights in the presidential suite were still on.
Jackson was still sitting at his desk, his gaze fixed on the pile of documents in front of him.
"Mr. Frane, she's very stubborn. She fainted but didn't reveal anything."
Jackson heard Harry's words, rubbed his brow, and said.
"I understand."
Harry didn't move, looking at Jackson's cold demeanor, his brows furrowed.
"Mr. Frane, maybe you should agree to her conditions first. Writing a letter of understanding doesn't mean much. Let her talk first."
Jackson looked up, his voice cold. "Ruby isn't that easy to fool. She'll only raise the stakes next time."
Harry rubbed his head in frustration. "What could she possibly know about Taylor? Taylor has been dead for so long. What information could be so important that it's worth her life? Unless she can bring Taylor back to life, otherwise..."
Harry's voice suddenly stopped.
An unbelievable thought crossed his mind, and he stared at Jackson in shock.
"Mr. Frane! Could it be..."
Seeing Jackson's deep eyes, burning with a hint of fire, Harry knew Jackson had already thought of this.
Harry clenched his fists, stepping forward, his voice tense.
"Mr. Frane, could Taylor still be alive?!"
If Taylor were alive and hidden by Ruby, then a life for a life would indeed be worth Ruby's confident stance.
