"Sometimes, being too hypocritical will eventually get you exposed." Lillian scoffed lightly and turned to leave because Shirley had just arrived and witnessed the whole performance.
As soon as Lillian left, mocking voices filled the silent café.
"Wendy, you've been lying to us all along! We even stood up for you. You're just disgusting."
"I've seen people pretend to be rich, but never someone pretending to be an ex-girlfriend. You're really something, huh ?"
"Mr. Frane never liked you, did he? Your vanity is just too much, making us all embarrassed you! We're out of here!"
In the blink of an eye, the group of friends surrounding Wendy dispersed, leaving her pale-faced.
Jenny also stood up and fumed, "Wendy, you even lied to me! That's too much!"
Jenny stormed out with her bag, and Wendy's face paled as she hurriedly chased after Jenny.
"That was quite a show! Lillian, did you see the unpleasant expression on Wendy's face just now? That hypocrite! Her friends will definitely spread this around by tomorrow. Let's see how she keeps up her act then!" Shirley watched from a distance, laughing heartily.
Lillian also smiled, feeling a bit of relief from the years of insults and mockery.
"By the way, have you and Jackson made up?" Shirley asked after her laughter subsided, looking at Lillian, who hadn't gone into detail over the phone.
Lillian briefly recounted the events of the past few days and then said, "Shirley, when I stood outside the ICU thinking Jackson was dead, I felt like I lost my anchor. Losing him was worse than him not loving me! Wendy's child isn't Jackson's, and he never betrayed me. Though he was cold to me, he never deprived me materially. His only fault was not loving me, but he thought I drugged him back then, so how could he love me? He protected me for ten years, and I've only held on to our marriage for two. Can't I try again?"
Lillian's eyes gleamed with vitality and hope for the future.
Seeing this, how could Shirley dampen her spirits?
She wished for Lillian's happiness.
The bond between Jackson and Lillian was deep, and Shirley had witnessed his extreme affection for Lillian.
Two instances stood out vividly.
In middle school, a punk said some lewd things to Lillian, and Jackson chased him down several streets, scaring him to tears on his knees.
That wasn't the end of it. Jackson made him hand out flyers at the school gate for a month, leaving him utterly humiliated and likely never to speak out of line again.
Another time, during a summer storm, Jackson parked his luxury car outside the campus and personally carried Lillian to the classroom building because she had cramps. He wouldn't even let her walk.
A regular guy caring this much would make anyone's heart flutter, let alone when it was Jackson.
Honestly, if Shirley went through what Lillian did, she might be even more soft-hearted than Lillian.
Shirley pinched Lillian's cheek and said, "There's a saying that we shouldn't meet someone too dazzling when we are young; otherwise, we will be lonely for a lifetime because we can't forget them. I think you're stuck with Jackson for life. You've already completed your self-conquest for just a few words from him!"
Lillian thought Shirley was disappointed in her and felt anxious, but Shirley suddenly hugged her and comforted her, "I support you! There are so many people chasing Jackson, and you're already very brave. The bravest people are those who pursue love. Go for it, Lillian. Use your charm and gentleness to conquer him!"
Her words made Lillian blush, hugging Shirley back. "Shirley, thank you. You don't know how happy I am to know he wasn't with Wendy! If there's no one in his heart, why can't it be me? Before, I could live in his heart as a sister. Now, as a wife, I can too!"
At that moment, her phone rang. When Lillian saw the name on the screen, a smile spread across her face.
