Chapter 756
Jackson showed admiration for Lillian's sharpness.
He nodded, "Yeah, Dominic said he wasn't aware of the project details, that it was all handled by his subordinates. He disguised himself too well; at the time, no one in the Frane family suspected him.
"Besides, the ultimate beneficiary of the kidnapping actually was the Price family. However, because Star went missing and they found a severed finger, the Price family was also seen as the biggest victim, so we overlooked the possibility."
Lillian listened to the deeper meaning in Jackson's words, feeling a slight chill as she thought of a terrifying possibility. "You don't think the kidnapping back then had something to do with Dominic, do you?"
If that were true, it would be horrifying.
Jackson's expression didn't change at all, clearly indicating that he did think so. "The Price family didn't rise to power through honorable means. They cleaned up their act after Dominic's father passed away, but Dominic grew up in that environment. How could he be as kind-hearted as he appears?"
He probably has even dirtier methods behind the scenes.
If Dominic was indeed behind the kidnapping back then, it wouldn't be impossible.
Lillian tugged slightly at Jackson's shirt, "He wouldn't harm his own daughter, would he?"
Jackson raised an eyebrow, "Maybe Star's kidnapping was an accident."
Lillian understood what Jackson meant. Dominic had planned to kidnap Jackson, but because Star was wearing Jackson's coat at the time, the kidnappers took the wrong person. To correct their mistake, they also kidnapped Jackson, but they couldn't release Star once she was taken.
By the time Dominic discovered the mistake, things might have already spiraled out of his control.
It was not impossible.
If that's the case, Dominic really brought it upon himself.
No wonder Jackson's attitude towards Star has changed so much.
Once such suspicions and doubts arose, even without concrete evidence, it wass enough to make one shiver and destroy old affections.
"Even if Dominic wasn't behind the kidnapping, the Price family has repeatedly targeted you and our child. The first time, I believed it was all Susan's doing. The second time, if I still believe the Price family, I must be a fool."
Jackson gently caressed Lillian's cool cheek and continued. "How could I show mercy to a malicious woman who repeatedly tries to harm me?"
Lillian listened to his patient explanation, realizing she had wronged and misunderstood Jackson.
She felt a bit guilty and embarrassed, her eyes avoiding his, and her cheeks slightly reddening.
"Then why didn't you make her fulfill her promise to leave Miracalia?"
Jackson sighed, lightly pinching her cheek before saying, "Lillian, it's precisely because the Price family is entangled with Taylor that we can't let Star leave the country."
If he still had feelings for Star, he wouldn't have let someone break her ribs, making her bedridden for three months.
Lillian was momentarily stunned but quickly understood.
The environment abroad is complex, with too many loopholes to exploit.
It's not within Jackson's sphere of influence, and even if someone were assigned to watch Star, there's no guarantee she wouldn't seize the opportunity to do something or suddenly escape.
The Price family and Star are problematic, so it's safer to keep them under close watch.
"Alright." She agreed, but her lips couldn't help but curl up slightly.
Jackson lifted her chin, raising an eyebrow, "Oh? You wronged me, and an 'alright' is all I get?"
Lillian, a bit flustered and angry, glared at Jackson. "What else do you want? I wronged you because of your past misdeeds. You brought this on yourself!"
Lillian glared at him, looking cold and proud, unreasonable.
But to Jackson, she seemed full of charm and endearing stubbornness.
Jackson's large hand around her waist tightened, the warmth seeping through the fabric, scorching Lillian's skin like a branding iron.
Jackson's deep eyes gazed at her, and he tilted his head slightly, about to kiss her.
Lillian's cheeks warmed, but just as Jackson's lips were about to touch hers, she pressed hard on his leg.
She pressed right on Jackson's bruised knee.
Without holding back, the pain made Jackson gasp.
Lillian used the momentum to get off Jackson's lap, moving to the side. She looked at Jackson, who was in shock.
"I haven't agreed to anything yet. Don't push your luck."
Jackson, holding his pained leg, looked at her mischievous expression, a doting smile forming on his lips.
"So, will you agree to my request?"
Before Lillian could respond, her phone rang.
Under Jackson's resentful gaze, she took out her phone without any guilt and walked to the side to answer it.
Jackson watched Lillian's back, listening to her tone on the phone.
It seemed like an unimportant call. In the past, Lilian always prioritized his matters.
Now, even when he urgently wanted an answer, Lillian made him wait.
And Jackson realized he had no way to deal with Lillian.
But the call wasn't unimportant to Lillian.
She had had someone keep an eye on the annual cooperation signing between Star Group and HorizonHive Media and just received news.
Ronnie had prepared the contract and was ready to personally deliver it to HorizonHive Media for Star to sign.
"Wait another half hour and send the prepared email." Lillian said and hung up.
When she turned around, she saw Jackson still staring at her from the hospital bed.
Jackson hadn't slept all night, his eyes bloodshot, and he had just recovered from a fever, making his face look pale.
But this didn't detract from his handsome and dashing appearance; it even added a touch of vulnerability and harmlessness.
Like an adorable puppy, making one want to agree to all his requests and go over to hug and kiss him.
All an illusion! A disguise.
Lillian reminded herself, picking up her bag and saying, "I have things to do, so I'll leave now. Take care and rest well. Bye."
She turned and walked away, quickly reaching the door.
Jackson hadn't expected that after almost baring his heart to her, Lillian could still leave without any response.
Jackson was momentarily stunned, and just as he was about to get out of bed to chase her, Lillian seemed to sense it and turned around.
"If you dare get out of bed, don't pursue me anymore, because I don't want a future boyfriend who needs me to take care of him before even catching up to me."
Jackson didn't fully understand Lillian's meaning, but he instinctively stopped.
His legs, about to touch the ground, even curled his toes, hovering awkwardly in mid-air.
The action was a bit funny, a bit ridiculous, and somewhat cute.
As Lillian turned, she couldn't help but laugh. She walked away briskly, not looking back.
