Chapter 853

"Anouk, you still don't believe Mary ratted you out? How else would we know about Jim's Noodle House?"

The kind-looking cop tapped his pen lightly on the table twice.

Those two soft taps felt like they were pounding on Anouk's head, making her break out in a cold sweat.

"Anouk, the only reason we're giving you a chance is 'cause you're still young. If you're convicted of premeditated murder, you're looking at a minimum of ten years. But if you come clean now, you might..."

Before he could finish, there was a knock on the door of the interrogation room.

A junior officer signaled to the female officer questioning Anouk, who got up and walked over. Anouk, feeling panicked, instinctively glanced in that direction.

She saw a somewhat familiar figure being led past the door by another officer.

It was a server from Jim's Noodle House.

Why were the police bringing the server here? Could it be that the server overheard something? She had only met Mary at the noodle house twice.

Each time, she had disguised herself thoroughly, with heavy makeup and a tightly wrapped outfit.

There was no way the server could recognize her unless the server had overheard something.

Anouk was on high alert, watching as the female officer quickly shut the door, as if afraid Anouk would see the server.

But just before the door closed, Anouk thought she saw the female officer's lips form the words "new witness."

The female officer then turned to look in the direction the server had gone.

The door closed, and the male officer tapped his pen on the table twice more.

"Anouk, if you don't want to take this last chance, there's nothing we can do. Take her back."

The male officer started packing up his things, and the officer recording the session closed his laptop and stood up.

The officer standing by the door came over to unlock the interrogation chair. Seeing that they were going to take her away, Anouk's panic grew.

"Where are you taking me? Are you letting me go?"

Anouk asked the officer leading her, who gave her a cold, disdainful look.

"Of course not. You're not going anywhere. Wait for the trial."

"But you have no evidence. You can only hold me for twenty-four hours. Isn't the time almost up?"

Anouk had lost track of time since being detained.

"You said it yourself, that's if there's no evidence. Now we have a witness, and physical evidence is just a matter of time. Do you think you can still get out? Move it!"

The officer urged her, and Anouk's legs went weak.

She got off the interrogation chair and immediately fell to her knees, seeing the two officers who had been questioning her about to leave.

In a panic, she called out.

"Wait! I have something to say!"

The two officers exchanged a glance, their eyes lighting up, and turned back to her.

"Anouk, are you sure you want to confess? Don't waste our time."

Anouk nodded, terrified that if she didn't confess now, she would be seen as the mastermind and lose her chance to explain.

"I've made up my mind."

The male officer signaled to the other officer, who pushed Anouk back into the interrogation chair.

As soon as the recording equipment was turned back on, Anouk, trembling, asked, "Can I get a glass of water?"

Her voice was hoarse and barely audible from fear.

The male officer frowned but nodded to his assistant.

The assistant got up to get water, but soon another officer returned with a glass.

"The chief called him away. He asked me to bring the water."

The male officer nodded, and the officer quickly brought the glass to Anouk, handing it to her.

As Anouk reached for it, she felt the officer tap her hand twice, as if signaling something.

Startled, she looked up at the officer.

The officer's eyes held a warning. "Be careful."

Anouk's heart raced. She took the glass and thanked him.

She drank the water, stalling by pretending to choke.

When she finally finished, the male officer impatiently asked her what she wanted to say. Anouk shook her head.

"Officer, I did go to Jim's Noodle House, but only to see what my biological mother looked like. I didn't want to admit it earlier because I didn't want my adoptive parents to find out. I was afraid they'd be upset and stop loving me."

"But really, I only met Mary twice. I didn't conspire with her to tamper with the car!"

The male officer, thinking he had broken Anouk's psychological defenses, was taken aback by her sudden change in story.

His face fell. "Anouk! Are you playing games with us?"

"I wouldn't dare. I really wouldn't. Everything I said is true, officer!"

Seeing her like this, the officer knew they had missed their chance. He was deeply disappointed.

Half an hour later, Anouk was released without charges.

As she left the police station, she stumbled.

Kenneth's driver was waiting for her. Seeing her, he hurried over.

"Ms. Lawson, please get in the car. Mr. and Mrs. Lawson are waiting for you at home."

He helped her into the car.

As the car drove away from the station, the officer who had interrogated her watched silently, then picked up his phone and made a call.

"Terry..."

In the car, Anouk curled up in the back seat, finally letting her nerves relax as she broke down in tears.

Then she wiped her tears and asked the driver, "Is Lillian dead?"

The driver, one of Kenneth's men, looked at her in shock.

Realizing her mistake, Anouk quickly corrected herself.

"I'm just worried about her. My parents must be worried sick, too."

"They are very worried. But Mr. Frane took Ms. Kelly to the hospital and sealed off all information. They waited in the hallway for a day and a night, but Mr. Frane didn't let them see her. We don't know how Ms. Kelly is doing."

"I hope Lillian is okay!" Anouk said, though she felt nothing but disgust for the name.

She mouthed words of concern, but inside, she cursed Jackson for interfering. The car crash should have killed Lillian.

As Anouk was lost in her malicious thoughts, the car suddenly jolted and came to a stop.

"What happened?"

Anouk looked up, but before she could react, there was a loud crash.

Something had hit the side of the car, sending it careening towards the guardrail.

The next moment, the car broke through the guardrail and plunged into the lake.
