Chapter 719
Jackson looked at Lyra, his thin lips tightly pressed.
Lyra was clearly trying to help him win back Lilian. Now that Lilian was still here, how could they let Star come in and cause more trouble?
"Grandma, you finally got Lilian to come over. Wouldn't it be nice to have a quiet meal? Why let someone irrelevant come and disturb us?"
Jackson's tone was disapproving, and Lyra looked at him with a faint smile. "It's only polite to meet the guest."
Jackson couldn't understand Lyra's thoughts and looked at Lilian with some concern.
Lilian met his gaze and smiled slightly. "Mr. Frane, your nervousness makes you seem guilty. What? Are you afraid I'll make things difficult for Ms. Price?"
Lilian didn't mind seeing Star at all. She still had unfinished business with Star.
Realizing she misinterpreted his intentions on purpose, Jackson's face darkened slightly, and he sneered. Think what you want.
At this moment, the butler had already brought Star in.
Star was wearing a cream-colored dress today, paired with a light purple cashmere cardigan, and a black thin belt that accentuated her slender waist.
Her long hair was loosely tied into a bun at the back, and she wore only a pair of pearl earrings.
She was carrying a thermal food container, looking low-key and gentle.
She had the kind of simple and clean appearance that elders would like at first sight.
Star walked in, her gaze lingering on Jackson for a few seconds, her eyes curving into a smile before she turned to Lyra, who was seated at the head of the table. "Lyra, the weather has been unpredictable lately. I made some soup myself. It's good for you. Please try it."
Star stepped forward with the thermal container, only then seeming to notice Lilian. After a look of surprise, she turned slightly pale. "Lilian is here too. Did I come at a bad time and disturb you?"
Lilian nodded unceremoniously. "If I say you disturbed us, will you leave now?"
Star hadn't expected Lilian to dare say such a thing in front of Lyra, thinking she must be crazy.
Jackson pampered and protected her, so he probably wouldn't say anything to Lilian. But Lyra had always valued rules and appearances. Lilian's behavior would surely annoy Lyra to no end.
In comparison, Star would appear more gentle, generous, and understanding.
Thinking this, Star looked flustered but still endured and said, "I'm sorry. If that's the case, I'll leave now and come back another time to see Lyra."
Star said as she turned to leave.
Since she had been brought in, it must have been with Lyra's consent.
Now that Lillian wasn't even Jackson's wife, it would be humiliating to Lyra if she kicked out her guests in public.
Just as Star turned her back, she heard Lyra's voice. "Wait a moment."
Star felt a surge of joy and turned to look at Lyra, waiting for her to comfort her, hoping she would even drive Lilian out.
But Lyra said, "Star, you have quite a temper."
Star was stunned, unable to understand Lyra's thought.
Lyra's expression was serious. "Lilian was just joking with you, and you want to leave? That would make everyone uncomfortable."
Star opened her mouth, feeling like she was going to explode.
She cursed in her head, 'Lyra is too biased. Is she clueless? How could she see Lilian's words as a joke?'
After holding back, Star nodded and forced a smile. "Sorry, I misunderstood. I know Lilian has many misunderstandings about me and has never liked me. Last time at the club, I drank a bottle of brandy to apologize to Lilian, and I got so sick I threw up. But I thought if Lilian could feel my sincerity and reconcile with me, I would do anything."
Star's humble and dignified demeanor made Lilian admire her.
After all, having thick skin and good acting skills was rare, and Star had both.
Star said this to imply to Lyra that at the club, Lilian had made her drink a bottle of alcohol.
But why didn't Star mention why she was made to drink?
Lilian was about to expose her intentions when Jackson coldly said, "Stop it. Are you trying to ruin everyone's appetite by saying that?"
Jackson's voice was deep, his words resonating as if he was describing Star's influence on our appetite.
Star's eyes reddened, feeling extremely embarrassed, and she said helplessly, "Jackson, what did I do wrong? Why do you have to humiliate me like this?"
She just said she got drunk and threw up, yet he said she was ruining everyone's appetite.
She realized that Jackson felt disgusted at the sight of her, no matter what she did. Star's tears began to fall.
Jackson's thin lips pressed tightly. "You know better than anyone what you did wrong."
The situation was getting awkward, so Lyra spoke to ease the tension, "Star, don't take Jackson's words to heart."
Star's expression softened, and she looked at Lyra with a few grateful glances.
She thought Lyra was feeling sorry for her and comforting her, but then Lyra continued, "Jackson was dumped by Lilian. He's been taking a lot from her and can't bear to vent on her, so he takes it out on everyone else. Don't mind him."
Hearing that, both Star and Lilian fell silent.
Jackson was also at a loss, not knowing if Lyra was helping him or mocking him.
After a while, Star forced a smile and said to Lyra, "Lyra, actually, the remarriage rate in our country is very low. It's hard to repair a broken relationship, let alone a marriage. Lilian has clearly moved on."
Lyra's face immediately darkened, and she frowned. "The remarriage rate depends on the situation! For men who are abusive, unfaithful, or have bad habits, it's impossible. For those whose personalities don't match or whose feelings have faded, the chances are also low. But if the couple still love each other and divorced because of misunderstandings or bad people causing trouble, isn't remarriage just a matter of time? Star, don't you think so?"
Lyra smiled, but it was clear she was implying that Star was the one who ruined Jackson's marriage.
Jackson hadn't told her everything, but Lyra could understand it.
Star and her father's intentions were obvious, and they just wanted Jackson to feel guilty towards the Price Family.
Over the years, he had helped them a lot, and Lyra had seen it. Jackson had even missed his wedding to pick up Star.
Now Jackson's attitude toward Star has changed dramatically. If Star and her father had done nothing, Lyra wouldn't believe it.
She let Star in today because she also wanted to make her position clear in front of the three.
Lyra hoped Jackson and Lilian would reconcile and remarry, so Star wouldn't have unrealistic hopes and keep coming to the Frane Mansion.
Lyra thought she had made herself clear enough, and Star should back off.
But Star's expression stiffened for a moment, then she said in surprise, "Lyra, do Jackson and Lilian still love each other? You must be mistaken. Lilian, do you still love Jackson?"
Star looked at Lilian and asked in front of everyone.
