Chapter 24 Honey, We're Not Getting Divorced
Lillian was floored. This was the first time Jackson had ever put a ring on her finger. They never had a wedding ceremony; he left for abroad the day after they signed the marriage certificate and was gone for months. Lyra had prepared the wedding ring, and Lillian had worn it ever since she put it on herself. Jackson only started wearing his ring after they consummated their marriage a year ago.
Lillian tried to take it off, but Jackson suddenly intertwined his fingers with hers and warned, "Lyra's condition is getting worse. Don't be stubborn!" His grip made her finger ache from the pressure of the ring.
Thinking Jackson was just trying to scare her, Lillian returned to the villa and found Lyra taking medication. The dosage was much higher than before.
Lillian didn't dare mention divorce and instead went to prepare a few of Lyra's favorite dishes.
Before dinner, Daisy and Jackson's father, Martin, came back together. Daisy's eyes flashed with disdain when she saw Lillian.
‘Lillian talks about divorce and then comes running back to the mansion. How shameless,’ Daisy thought.
As Lillian entered the kitchen, Daisy followed. Lillian turned and smiled at her while stirring the soup. "Yeah, how could I give up the Frane family's glory and wealth?" she said, matching Daisy's insinuation, making Daisy's face darken even more.
"You finally admitted it. Jackson really should see this side of you!" Daisy turned and walked out.
Lillian only cooked a few dishes that Lyra loved; the rest were prepared by the servants. After leaving the kitchen, she went to Lyra's bedroom. Unexpectedly, Jackson was there too.
Lyra was lying on the bed, reaching out her hand towards Lillian. "Lillian, come here quickly."
Lillian sat by the bed, holding Lyra's hand.
Lyra asked, "Are you and Jackson planning to divorce without telling me?"
Lillian was caught off guard. This was her chance to tell Lyra about her plan to divorce and study abroad. But Lyra's eyes were so sad and worried, as if she had aged five or six years in an instant. The hand Lillian held was gaunt and trembling.
Lillian's lips moved, but she was unsure how to explain. Before she could decide, Jackson had already wrapped his arm around her. "Grandma, we're doing fine. Right, Honey?"
Jackson's voice was full of charm. Even though it was the first time he called her his wife and just for Lyra's sake, Lillian found it hard to resist, and her defenses crumbled.
Blushing, Lillian replied, "Yes, we're doing well."
Lyra snorted, "I can't be fooled that easily. I was recuperating in the suburban sanatorium, and Jackson insisted on bringing me back. Isn't it because you two had a quarrel, and he couldn't handle it, so he dragged me back? I'm not stupid. I know everything. Do you admit it, Jackson?"
Jackson remained composed and said, "Grandma, you're the wisest. Nothing escapes your notice."
Lillian's heart skipped a beat, staring at Jackson in a daze. She had thought he didn't want a divorce for the sake of his reputation or to retaliate against her, not to save the marriage. But now she wondered if Jackson wasn't as heartless as she had thought. Maybe he also had some attachment to this marriage.
"Say something nice to Lillian already!" Lyra urged. Jackson smiled helplessly, his handsome features showing a hint of amusement. With a casual turn of his head, he met Lillian's gaze.
Lillian blushed instantly, her heartbeat quickening. Jackson looked at Lillian's shy and lovely face, his breathing slightly hitched, his Adam's apple bobbing. He raised his hand, gently ruffled Lillian's hair, and hoarsely said, "Honey, we're not getting divorced, okay?"
