Chapter 47 The Baby

Exasperation clawed at Shirley's heart. Jackson, the unmitigated scoundrel, hadn't even hinted at financial support when he'd crossed paths with Lilian earlier. The audacity of it all, withholding funds from his wife while lavishing his mistress, enabling her to torment his wife without restraint.

"Lilian..." Shirley's voice was laced with regret. She shouldn't have intervened, shouldn't have voiced her thoughts. Now, she'd inadvertently upset Lilian.

Lilian's face was a mask, void of any discernible emotion. She turned her gaze to Jenny. "I appreciate the reminder, Sister Jenny. I'll make a quick trip to the supermarket for a sizable pair of scissors. Half of Brother Jackson's possessions are rightfully mine. Whatever you purchase later, I'll cut it in half."

"If you envy Wendy, admit it. Don't resort to underhanded tactics," Jenny retorted.

"Envy is a sentiment shared among equals. My Lilian is a beauty of celestial proportions. Perhaps you're the ones green with envy, considering the unsightly results of your numerous plastic surgeries?" Shirley's words ignited a fire in Jenny, who was on the brink of exploding. Sensing an impending confrontation, Wendy, anxious to avoid embarrassing Jackson, swiftly ushered Jenny away.

Shirley clasped Lilian's hand, her voice brimming with resentment. "I retract my previous praise. Jackson is an absolute scoundrel. He might as well remain with his mistress indefinitely!"

Lilian gently patted her hand, her voice soothing. "Let's not dwell on them. They're inconsequential."

Her interest waning, Lilian approached the salesperson. "I'll take the pair I'm wearing. Please wrap them up for me."

She removed her shoes and handed them to the salesperson, who smiled and replied, "Of course, miss. Let me fetch a new pair and package them. This pair is merely for display."

Lilian nodded absentmindedly.

As they exited, the salesperson retrieved the shoes from the shelf and hastily retreated to the storeroom.

Her phone rang, and she answered.

"Ensure the shoes are thoroughly cleaned," Wendy commanded, her eyes simmering with irritation. She was determined to teach Lilian a lesson, preferably by causing her to trip and injure herself.

Jackson's unexpected arrival was a stroke of luck for that woman. How could she be so fortunate!

"Rest assured, Miss Sivan," the salesperson replied, flipping the shoes to reveal oil stains on the soles.

Once Lilian and Shirley exited the shoe store, they ascended to the restaurant upstairs for a meal.

They ordered Mexican spicy prawns, the aroma tantalizing.

Lilian had a penchant for spicy food, a trait she'd inherited from Mrs. Sivan senior. However, the Frane family's palate leaned towards bland flavors.

Lilian, being the overlooked member of the Frane family, had to adapt to their culinary preferences, even within the confines of Peace Mansion. She always prepared bland meals, anticipating Jackson's return at any moment. Each solitary meal was a testament to her disappointment.

"Oh no! Is the baby alright? Let Mama check!"

At a nearby table, a young mother accidentally spilled a glass of hot water. Despite scalding her own arm, she immediately scooped up her daughter from a distant high chair, anxiously inspecting her.

Lilian was entranced by the scene. Shirley, noticing her distraction, offered her two prawns. "Prawns are nutritious and protein-rich. Eat more. Your little one needs nourishment. I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my goddaughter!"

Lilian snapped back to reality. "I haven't decided yet whether to keep this child or not..."

Shirley remained silent, simply sliding her phone towards Lilian. Displayed on the screen was a photo Shirley had captured of Lilian lost in thought moments ago.

"You look so content, exuding maternal warmth. It would be peculiar if you were willing to relinquish this child. If you want it, keep it. It's not a monumental decision. I can chop off my hair and play the role of the baby's father. These are all trivial matters."
