Chapter 794

Lillian naturally had breakfast with Ambrose.

She was worried that after what happened last night, things would be awkward between them and not as natural as before.

But it turned out she was overthinking it.

Ambrose was clearly good at adjusting his mindset and emotions. Throughout breakfast, he didn't bring up yesterday's events, as if nothing had happened.

After breakfast, as Lillian was getting ready to leave for work, Kaia came in holding a box and said, "Ms. Kelly, a driver-looking guy outside delivered a box, saying it's a gift for you. He shoved the box into my hands and drove off, as if afraid I wouldn't take it. What should we do with it?"

Lillian was puzzled and reached out to Kaia, "Let me see it."

Kaia had just taken a step when Ambrose said in a slightly deep voice, "I'll take a look."

Lillian looked over, and Ambrose nodded at her, "Better safe than sorry."

Ambrose was clearly worried that the unknown item might be harmful to Lillian.

Lillian felt it was unnecessary, but seeing Ambrose's determined look, she smiled and said, "Then you be careful too."

Kaia handed the box to Ambrose. Ambrose opened the outer cardboard box to reveal a very delicate long box inside.

"It does look like a gift."

Ambrose opened the box to find a white jade hairpin lying quietly on a black velvet lining, raising an eyebrow.

"I was being overly cautious. It is indeed a gift for you, a gemstone hairpin of such high quality, and it's a masterpiece by the late master carver Mr. Brandon. If I'm not mistaken, this was the highlight of last night's auction. Lillian, do you know who sent it?"

Ambrose raised an eyebrow, his eyes hinting that he already knew who sent it.

He handed the box to Lillian. Lillian's gaze fell on the box, and even before seeing the contents, her heart started to beat a little faster.

Last night, Jackson had planned to go to the auction with her, but because of an incident with Shirley in the afternoon, they were delayed and couldn't make it.

The item in the box was most likely sent by Jackson.

Lillian took the box, and upon seeing the exquisite gemstone hairpin, she was almost certain.

She seemed to see Jackson's little thoughts.

As she was thinking, her phone rang.

Lillian took it out and saw it was indeed Jackson calling. She picked up the box and stood up, looking at Ambrose.

"Go ahead and answer it."

Lillian smiled and walked out, but Ambrose added, "Jackson's car was parked outside all night last night. He was probably worried that you might need him if there was thunder in the middle of the night."

Lillian was stunned and turned to look at Ambrose in surprise. "How do you know?"

Ambrose stood up and walked towards her.

"Are you asking how I knew he was outside all night, or how I knew his thoughts?"

Lillian blinked. She wanted to ask the latter.

But her phone kept ringing, and Ambrose didn't seem inclined to explain. He just glanced at her phone and said, "It doesn't matter. Go answer the call."

"Okay." Lillian didn't press further and answered the call as she turned.

As soon as she put the phone to her ear, Jackson's deep voice came through.

"What were you doing? Why did it take so long to answer?"

Lillian hummed lightly, "If you think I took too long, I can hang up and you can call again."

Jackson didn't know how to respond.

Ambrose stood at the dining room door, watching Lillian's light steps as she walked upstairs, listening to her playful yet charming voice, a bitter smile crossing his lips.

He'd barely slept last night, and he'd noticed the car parked outside the whole time.

As for how he knew Jackson was worried about the thunder spooking Lillian? Well, he'd had the same thought.

He'd been afraid the storm might freak her out, that she'd need someone to calm her down.

But he'd forgotten—even if Lillian needed someone, it wouldn't be him. Not now, not ever.

Upstairs, Lillian sat cross-legged on the bed and dared to take out the gemstone hairpin for a closer look.

"Do you like it? It's a surprise from me."

"This hairpin is beautiful, but it looks very delicate and fragile, only suitable for keeping in a safe, not for wearing."

Jackson must have spent a lot of money on it.

"Who says it's not suitable for wearing? I'll help you put it on later."

Hearing Jackson's lighthearted voice, Lillian smiled.

"Then I really wouldn't dare to wear it."

"Why, don't you trust my skills? Didn't I do a good job with your hair before? Or were my braids not pretty?"

Jackson's questioning tone reminded Lillian of the past.

Back in elementary school, Jackson had done her hair for a year.

He could do buns and braids.

At first, they didn't look very good, but later, he could make her hair look very pretty.

Lillian's eyes softened with a gentle light.

She carefully put the hairpin back in the box, "Okay, I'll wait for you to help me put it on."

Jackson didn't speak immediately, but Lillian could hear his slightly heavier breathing.

After a while, he spoke again, "I'm suddenly a bit nervous."

Lillian didn't believe him, but her ears felt a bit tingly.

She quickly changed the subject and asked, "Yesterday, you said you were going to the auction to see if there was anything you could get for Pax's birthday gift, but you really wanted to get this hairpin, right?"

Jackson chuckled, "Yes, Lillian, forty years ago, Grandpa gave Grandma a Brandon hairpin. I hope that forty years from now, I can still use this hairpin to do your hair."
