Chapter 347 Pathetic

Lillian, indeed, lacked a bit of courage.

"Alright, don't be afraid. I'm always here," Shirley comforted

Lillian opened the wardrobe, and as expected, the box was still there.

She put her phone aside, took out the box, and opened it. The first thing that caught her eye was a pair of shiny crystal hairpins.

The kind that Star would like, along with yellowed comic books, dolls, and a snow globe.

Obviously, these were all Star's things, all kept here by Jackson.

He didn't let anyone else touch these, but the items inside the box were still very clean.

She thought, 'He must have regularly cleaned and looked at them himself.'

Lillian finally picked up a photo album. She opened it, and she saw an old photo of two two-year-old children sitting together, both wearing birthday hats and making wishes in front of a cake.

Lillian immediately recognized the cute boy in the suit , as Jackson.

And the girl was definitely Star.

Lillian flipped through the pages, seeing they gradually grow from children into teenagers.

In the last birthday photo, Jackson and Star were dressed as a groom and bride.

They were riding a horse together, smiling brightly at the camera.

Twelve-year-old Jackson had a kind of exuberant smile on his face that Lillian had never seen before.

Lillian couldn't hold back her tears anymore. She forcefully closed the album and pressed it back to the bottom of the box.

She frantically tried to close the box as if it was a Pandora's box.

However, a few orange candy wrappers were pulled out, and Lillian paused.

She laughed and said, "Shirley, even my favorite orange candies that Jackson gave me were also Star's favorite candies."

Lillian held the wrappers, tears continuously falling.

She remembered that Henry had also given her an orange candy when she was little.

It turned out that whether it was Jackson or Henry, the candies in their hands all belonged to Star.

"Alright, don't cry. Taylor will worry about you." Shirley gently comforted Lillian.

Lillian wiped her tears, put the box back as it was, and closed the wardrobe. Her expression had become unusually cold.

She picked up her phone and said calmly, "Shirley, in just one day and night, I seem to have witnessed Jackson's deep affection for Star. They grew up together and were betrothed at birth. Jackson never gave up looking for Star for 16 years after losing her. Maybe, as Wendy said, I'm just a substitute for Star. Jackson couldn't find his poor Star, so he projected his misplaced emotions onto me. Do you think I'm pathetic? Before I was 6, they said I owed Wendy, and after I was 8, I owed Star, right? Am I really only fit to be the child of the Young family and beaten to death by Bob? Why does it feel like I owe everyone just by breathing? It's so funny!"

Shirley felt a deep pain listening to this. Lillian had received so little love and had always been abandoned.

Jackson was Lillian's salvation, and she always thought he was the only one who hadn't abandoned her.

But now, Lillian realized that Jackson's affection for her wasn't pure, which was so cruel to her.

Shirley couldn't bear it and hoarsely advised, "Lillian, maybe there's some misunderstanding, and the truth is not like that. Don't overthink it. Even if Jackson did like Star back then, so many years have passed, he must have let it go by now."

Lillian shook her head and smiled, affirming, "No, Shirley. I've never been so clear-headed. Jackson hasn't let go of Star! If he had let go, he wouldn't have kept it from me and be so concerned about the Price family. He treats Susan even more closely and respectfully than Daisy, and he's been trying to find Star all these years. In fact, I'm the extra one!"

Hearing Lillian say this, Shirley fell silent.

Lillian added, "Shirley, I'm fine. I just feel so ridiculous. It turns out that while I was trying to catch up with Jackson and grow up, he already had someone deeply etched in his heart. When I knew he didn't like Wendy, I was relieved that I had met him early enough and no one had been there earlier than me. I thought if his heart was empty, the one to fill it would surely be me. However, I didn't realize I had arrived 14 years later than Star."

"Lillian, stop saying that!" Shirley felt very uncomfortable hearing this.

But Lillian was still laughing as the tears welled up on her face.

"Shirley, I always thought that if I tried hard enough, I could occupy his heart as his wife. However, it's useless. Loving him is so exhausting for me. I don't want to love him anymore. I'm giving up! I'll let him and Star be together," Lillian said.
