Chapter 438

Seeing him still crouched in front of her like a statue, Lillian couldn't take it anymore and stood up abruptly. If he wouldn't leave, she would.

But then Jackson suddenly stood up and pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly as if he wanted to merge with her. She heard his hoarse voice in her ear, "Lillian, I'm sorry, but please don't refuse my help!"

Kevin stepped forward too and said, "Lillian, calm down."

Lillian closed her eyes, realizing she wasn't as clear-headed as she thought. Seeing Jackson still affected her. She regretted turning down his offer. 'Shirley is the most important right now.'

After calming down, Lillian pushed Jackson away and nodded. Just as Jackson sighed in relief, Lillian bowed deeply to him, showing utmost respect.

"Thank you very much, Mr. Frane," she said emotionlessly.

Kevin's coat slipped off her shoulders as she bowed. Dressed in a wedding gown, she bowed deeply, showing distant yet polite respect. This was supposed to be their wedding. She should have been in his arms, kissing him amidst the guests' blessings. However, his absence and the chaos had changed everything. They had gone from being the closest to complete strangers.

Jackson felt like a giant stone was pressing on his chest, making it hard to breathe. He restrained his emotions, knowing she was rejecting him and wouldn't listen to anything he said. His forehead veins throbbed as he suppressed the urge to hold her. Instead, he nodded helplessly. "I'm doing this not for you, but for myself! You don't need to thank me."

He was doing this for himself. Because of what happened to Shirley, he feared it would be even harder to win her back. Jackson's deep eyes locked onto Lillian, hoping she understood his words. But Lillian seemed not to hear, or maybe she heard but didn't care anymore.

She straightened up indifferently, but her body wobbled weakly. "Honey!" Jackson's expression changed, reaching out to support her. Lillian dodged him, lost her balance, and fell. Fortunately, Kevin caught her before she hit the ground.

As Kevin helped Lillian back to her chair, Jackson stood frozen, unable to withdraw his hand. His eyes were filled with pain and darkness, his lips tightly pressed. She was pregnant, yet she would rather fall than let him touch her? Was that avoidance instinctive? Had her disgust for him reached such an extreme?

He clenched his fist, his emotions wrapped in a thin veil of cold. Jackson looked at Lillian, who sat there motionless, still worried about Shirley. He turned and left, heading towards the emergency exit. He feared that if he stayed any longer, he would do something irrational.

When Kevin opened the emergency exit door, he smelled the strong scent of smoke. Jackson stood tall by the window. The window was wide open, the cold wind and drifting snow swirling around him. His collar was loosened, his shirt flapping wide, and a dusting of snow had settled on his shoulders. The cold white smoke curling from his lips obscured his face, casting a gloomy shadow over him, much like the dark sky outside.

Kevin walked over. "Jackson, have you found out who forged the diary?"

Jackson took a deep drag before looking at him.
