Chapter 861
The butler hung up the phone, and Tobias helped Ronan forward.
"What's the news?"
"Mr. Ambrose Kelly is still in Miracalia. He said he's arranging a private jet to come back immediately. Mr. Lawson, the doctor said the situation is critical. How did this happen so suddenly?"
The butler's face was pale, and Ronan swayed on his feet.
"It's all my fault. I shouldn't have shown Oberon that video. I'm such an idiot!"
Ronan raised his hand to slap himself, but Tobias quickly grabbed his wrist.
Ronan looked like he was about to faint, so the butler instructed Tobias to take him back to rest.
But Ronan insisted on waiting on the bench outside the operating room. They waited for four or five hours, and the surgery still wasn't over.
Ronan couldn't hold on any longer and was finally helped away.
Once in the car, his weak demeanor vanished. He sat up straight and instructed Tobias.
"Get Alvin Weaver to meet me at the usual place immediately."
Meanwhile, inside the operating room, it was a completely different scene. There was no surgery happening at all.
Oberon was sitting on the operating table, eating the pork and radish soup that Flora had been craving. Ambrose, who was supposedly in Miracalia, was lazily leaning against the operating table, holding a tablet for Oberon.
On the tablet screen was a video call. Lillian's smiling face was in the top left corner, and Flora, holding a bowl of soup, was in the top right.
"Grandpa, take your time eating. There's no rush to say anything," Lillian said with a smile, seeing Oberon eating quickly.
Oberon slowed down, took the napkin Ambrose handed him, and wiped his mouth before turning to Lillian.
"Alright, I'll listen to my dear Lillian. But we still need to settle this! Such a big thing happened, and you kept it from me. Do you think that's right?"
Oberon's face fell. The thought of Lillian being in a coma for two days and nights, and how he almost lost her, made his heart ache.
If it weren't for the mess and the people he had to deal with in Seaspring Valley City, Oberon would have flown to Miracalia immediately.
Lillian felt a bit guilty being scolded.
But Flora, seeing Oberon scolding Lillian, immediately raised her head, frowning at Oberon.
"Don't scold Lillian. Lillian is the best!"
Oberon hadn't informed Flora beforehand to make the Lawson family believe the act.
When he was carried into the ambulance, Flora was terribly frightened.
Even though Flora was confused and didn't recognize people, she always remembered Oberon.
Earlier, Flora stood in the courtyard, looking lost and helpless like a child without a home.
Seeing Flora's red eyes, Oberon couldn't help but go along with whatever she wanted.
Besides, Lillian had just woken up from a two-day coma, having walked through hell. Oberon felt heartbroken and couldn't bear to scold her.
Looking at Lillian's still pale face, Oberon lost his appetite.
He handed the bowl and chopsticks to Ambrose, took the tablet, and looked closely at Lillian.
"Grandpa won't say anymore. Grandpa has no right to scold you. It's all Grandpa's fault. I couldn't tell friend from foe and kept a pack of wolves and tigers around me all these years."
Oberon thought about what Ambrose had secretly told him in the study.
He realized that Lillian's kidnapping might not have been just Bob's doing but could have involved the Kelly family.
Thinking about the multiple life-threatening situations Lillian had faced, Oberon's eyes turned cold.
He continued in a hoarse voice, "Lillian, it's Grandpa's fault you were displaced from a young age. It's Grandpa's fault you almost lost your life several times before we found you. Even after you returned to the Kelly family, Grandpa couldn't protect you and mistook enemies for family. Grandpa is deeply sorry."
Oberon's voice grew more remorseful and hoarse, filled with self-blame.
Lillian quickly said, "Grandpa, don't say that. It's those with ill intentions who are to blame, not you. Even ancient kings had traitors around them. Besides, I'm fine now and back with you and Grandma. Don't let unworthy people and things affect your health. Grandma and I would be heartbroken."
Lillian looked at Flora on the screen and smiled.
"Grandma, don't you agree?"
Flora, always listening to Lillian, immediately nodded.
Ambrose, standing nearby, chimed in.
"Am I invisible here? You can't exclude me from the family."
Ambrose draped his arm over Oberon's shoulder and leaned into the tablet's camera.
Lillian quickly said, "Ambrose, make sure Grandpa takes his blood pressure and heart medication. He always forgets."
Ambrose's eyes twinkled with amusement. "I'll set ten reminder alarms for him."
"Good idea," Lillian agreed immediately.
Oberon looked helpless, any lingering frustration dissipated by their banter.
"You two, always giving Grandpa a hard time instead of getting married or dating."
Lillian raised an eyebrow at Ambrose, recalling Jackson's story about Ambrose meeting a beautiful woman in a private room.
"Grandpa, don't worry. With how outstanding Ambrose is, there are plenty of beautiful women wanting to marry him. He might bring a beautiful granddaughter-in-law to meet you soon."
Lillian's words had a hidden meaning, and Oberon turned to Ambrose.
"Is there someone?"
Ambrose knew why Lillian said that, but it wasn't what she thought.
He looked at Lillian on the screen, intending to explain.
But seeing her curious and teasing look, he decided it wasn't necessary.
Let her think that. It might ease the awkwardness between them.
Ambrose smiled. "Not decided yet."
It sounded like he had someone in mind. Oberon glared at him.
"Then hurry up and decide. When I was young, I pursued your grandma with determination. If I had been as slow as you, she would have married someone else."
Ambrose and Lillian had heard Oberon and Flora's love story.
Oberon, not yet seventeen and a poor boy, fell for Flora, a wealthy young lady.
He once sang love songs outside her mansion at midnight, only to be chased by her butler's dogs.
Flora initially had little interest in Oberon but gradually fell for him. She chose the poorest boy among many suitors, facing ridicule from relatives and neighbors.
But Flora's choice proved right. Oberon never let her down.
Oberon's life had its ups and downs, but Flora always stood by him.
Lillian watched her grandfather speak, his eyes filled with nostalgia and tenderness as he looked at Flora on the screen, feeling a pang of envy.
She almost instinctively glanced in a certain direction.
Realizing she was still on a video call with Oberon, she quickly turned back.
Oberon suddenly said, "Jackson, eavesdropping isn't a good habit."
