Chapter 469 Determination
"How about I take the front seat?" she said, starting to get out of the car, making it seem like Lillian was causing trouble on purpose.
'Fine, we'll sit together. I'm not scared of you,' Lillian thought, turning around and getting back in the car with Jackson following.
As the car started, Star said, "Lillian, am I bothering you? My car got rear-ended after the auction, and I ran into Jackson."
Her voice was apologetic. Lillian turned and smiled. "It's okay, Miss Price. Your perfume and makeup are just a bit strong. Since I got pregnant, I can't stand strong smells. Don't worry about it."
Star's smile stiffened, and she touched her face.
She was older than Lillian by quite a few years, and her skin, having weathered through tough times, was no longer as tight, and her makeup was noticeably heavier.
As she saw Lillian's flawless complexion and her dewy, fresh face, Star's eyes darkened with envy.
She forced a smile, glancing at Jackson, hoping he would step in.
Jackson, however, ignored her and instructed Aiden up front, "Turn on the air recirculation."
Aiden immediately complied, and Star's smile froze in embarrassment.
"Star, she's sensitive during her pregnancy, so please don't take it the wrong way," Jackson said as he pulled Lillian closer, finally turning his attention to Star.
Star quickly shook her head, forcing a smile. "I truly envy Lillian. With a thoughtful husband like Jackson, how could I mind?"
Jackson, apparently oblivious to the real issue, wrapped his arm around Lillian, pulling her close. He asked gently, "Are you feeling uncomfortable?"
He genuinely thought she was bothered by the perfume, leaving Lillian somewhat speechless.
Feeling the futility of the situation, she closed her eyes and said, "I'll just take a nap."
"Alright, go ahead," Jackson replied.
He pulled her closer, covering her with a light blanket, occasionally adjusting her hair or gently massaging her arm.
His focus was entirely on his wife, almost as if he'd forgotten Star was there at all.
Star watched this scene with clenched fists.
Every day, she kept in touch with Jackson, subtly inching closer to him. Jackson was always polite, rarely denying her requests, but it never went beyond that.
Earlier, when she'd had a fever and called him, asking him to come over since Dominic was taking care of Susan at the hospital, Jackson had only sent a family doctor instead of coming himself.
Clearly, with Lillian around, Jackson was not interested in seeing her.
Understanding this, Star agreed to Lillian's proposal, and now, seeing Jackson's attention and tenderness towards Lillian, she was more convinced than ever that her decision was correct.
Lillian had to go—and she had to disappear completely.
Star was now worried that Lillian might suddenly change her mind, get caught in Jackson's gentle trap, and decide not to leave.
"Jackson, I heard Lillian is performing tomorrow. Could I come watch too?"
Star turned to Jackson with a look of hope and longing.
Jackson, instinctively pressing a finger to his lips to signal Star to be quiet, met her slightly dimmed eyes. He remembered how Star had danced as a child and had been quite talented on stage.
He nodded to her and said softly, "I'll have someone send you an invitation."
Sta smiled.
Lillian, who hadn't actually fallen asleep, was listening to their low conversation. She suddenly regretted inviting Jackson.
But the dance performance was just a facade for her departure from Miracalia. She needed Jackson to believe she was fully immersed in the dance company and busy with the upcoming shows. Only then would he relax his guard.
With that in mind, Lillian brushed off her regret, closed her eyes, and eventually did fall asleep.
