Chapter 490 Once and for All
Jackson hung up and scanned the bedroom. Daisy was right; Lillian's stuff was still there.
Her cashmere shawl was draped over the sofa, and her usual items were on the dressing table.
Jackson opened the jewelry box. Inside were the rose earrings, their wedding rings, and the pink diamond necklace he had given her. She hadn't taken any of it.
Shirley said these weren't what Lillian wanted. Seeing them felt like a slap to Jackson's face.
He took out the earrings, but his bloodstained hands smeared them.
He tried to wipe away the bloodstains, but the more he wiped, the more it spread, staining everything beyond repair.
It was like their relationship, now marred with deep cracks.
For the first time, he was completely uncertain about something, wondering if the rift between them was truly beyond mending.
"Lillian, have you really decided that this relationship is beyond repair? Have you already sentenced me to oblivion in your heart?
"Is that why you've left everything here so easily? Including me?"
Jackson's voice was tinged with self-mockery, but there was no response.
The silence was the harshest answer of all.
He clutched the earring, his back bending as if it were breaking, slowly folding under the weight of his despair.
For the following days, Jackson maintained his normal routine, staying busy with work.
He had stopped sending people to search for Lillian. The team previously dispatched by Aetherwell was recalled, and instead, he sent more people to find a suitable match for Jeffrey.
Dominic wanted Star to stay close to Jackson, to learn and gain experience in managing the company.
Jackson agreed, and Star began shadowing him.
Rumors started circulating in Miracalia about an impending engagement between the Frane family and the Price family. Various signs indicated that Jackson had given up on finding Lillian and was moving forward with his life.
Two months passed in the blink of an eye.
One night, Star returned home well past midnight. Susan was sitting on the sofa, listening to music.
"Star, you're back so late. What happened today?"
"Mom, there was a business event this evening. Jackson invited me to be his date. He introduced me to a lot of people, and he even drove me back himself."
Star was clearly excited as she sat beside Susan, chattering animatedly about the event.
Susan listened with a pleased expression, holding Star's hand and saying, "It seems like things are going really well between you and Jackson. You have the foundation of childhood affection, and Jackson has put in a lot of effort over the years to find you.
"Lillian was just a temporary substitute who took advantage of your absence. Men often have lingering feelings for those they care about.
"Now that she's gone, I'm confident things will go smoothly for you and Jackson! There's no wealthier family in Miracalia than the Frane family, and no man more worthy than Jackson. You need to make the most of this. If you're happy, I'll have no worries."
Star smiled and leaned into Susan's embrace. "Mom, but Lillian is still carrying Jackson's child. That baby is the biggest complication. It's unbelievable that they've lost track of a pregnant woman. They still haven't found her!"
Susan gently patted Star's shoulder, running her fingers through her hair. "Valoria isn't very big, and I've been cautious not to make too much noise about the search, fearing it might alert Jackson.
"But now it seems Lillian isn't as important to Jackson as she once was. We can afford to intensify the search and seize this chance to resolve the situation once and for all."
