Chapter 1078 It Was Her Doing

Henry stood by Whitney's bedside, emotions swirling within him, but he managed to thank the doctors for their efforts. "Thanks for everything, guys."

The doctors from various departments had collaborated for a grueling two-hour surgery to save Whitney.

"Just doing our job," One of the doctors replied with a nod before they all left.

A nurse wheeled Whitney to the ICU for further observation.

"Henry." Lola's soft voice called out from near the elevator. Henry looked up to see her, looking composed and graceful, being pushed in a wheelchair by Briar.

Henry quickly walked over to her and gently knelt by her side. "Did you hear? The doctors said Mom's life is out of immediate danger, but whether she can fully recover depends on her own strength."

"It must be your actions that moved God, combined with our unwavering love... that's why Mom was spared," Lola said with a hopeful smile.

"With you here, it feels like you're our family's good luck charm," Henry said, ruffling her hair before taking over from Briar to push her into the elevator. "Now let's go see Melanie. Maybe our lucky charm can help her pull through too."

"You're putting a lot of pressure on me," Lola chuckled, though her smile seemed a bit forced.

"What's the latest on Melanie?" Lola asked from her wheelchair.

"It's critical. The doctors are still working on her."

"And Dad?"

"He's in the ICU. He's awake but doesn't want to see me. He was really angry."

Henry pushed Lola to the twelfth floor, where their servant Wren was waiting outside the operating room.

Wren's expression soured upon seeing Lola. Whitney and Melanie were in this state because of her, yet she showed up as if nothing had happened. Even if Henry had asked her to come, didn't she have any self-awareness?

Regardless of her intentions, Melanie despised her. If Melanie woke up and saw her, it could worsen her condition.

Despite her reluctance, Wren greeted them. "Mr. Hall, Ms. Flores, Ms. Hall is still in surgery."

Lola noticed Wren's attitude and smiled graciously. "Henry and I are family now.. Just call me Mrs. Hall."

Wren, though annoyed, complied to keep her job. "Mrs. Hall."

It was clear to Wren that Lola didn't care about Melanie's condition. Who would worry about titles at a time like this?

Just then, the elevator doors opened, and Cecil rushed out. His anger flared upon seeing Lola.

"What's she doing here?" Cecil demanded from Henry.

Cecil had always opposed Henry's relationship with Lola, aligning with Melanie. Over time, he grew fond of Melanie and began pursuing her. Tonight, he couldn't reach her and found out she had been in a severe car accident.

"Lola is family," Henry corrected firmly.

"I don't care who she is. Melanie doesn't like her and doesn't want to see her! Melanie is fighting for her life, and you, as her brother, should at least not make things worse," Cecil snapped, glaring at Lola. "Get out!"

"Henry, your friend doesn't seem to like me," Lola said softly, tugging at Henry's sleeve. "Maybe I should go so I don't cause more trouble."

"You know you're causing trouble, yet you still came? I can't stand your fake act. Do you think we can't see through it? Leave now, and don't pretend to care about Melanie again."

"Cecil," Henry warned, his eyes flashing with anger.

"If you don't want to hear it, don't bring her around me or Melanie. And don't you find Melanie's accident suspicious? If it was deliberate, I don't care who protects her, I'll make sure she pays," Cecil said, glaring at Lola.

"I reviewed the footage. The truck driver fell asleep at the wheel. It wasn't Lola's fault."

"A truck driver falling asleep on a mountain road? Are you out of your mind?"

"The footage is clear and unedited."

"What if the driver was drugged before driving?"

Cecil's words made Lola's eyes flicker with panic, which Cecil immediately noticed. "It was you! Melanie opposed your relationship, so you tried to kill her? Lola!"

Cecil lunged at her, but Henry stepped in, blocking him.

"Enough!" Henry knew Cecil was deeply in love with Melanie and was struggling with her condition, but he wouldn't let him accuse Lola without proof.

"It was her! Didn't you see her reaction? She's guilty." Cecil shouted, trying to get past Henry.

"Henry, I'm scared..." Lola whimpered, clutching Henry's shirt and hiding behind him. "Let's go."

Henry tried to wheel her away, but Cecil grabbed the wheelchair. "Not until we get to the bottom of this. Did you cause Melanie's accident?"

"How could she? She has no connections or money," Henry retorted angrily. "Cecil, you're out of line."

As the wheelchair passed Cecil, he held on, glaring at Lola. "No one leaves until we get answers!"

Henry's eyes blazed with anger, but Cecil stood his ground.

At that moment, the operating room doors opened, and the doctors emerged.

"Who's the patient's family?"

"Melanie..." Cecil rushed forward. "I'm her boyfriend. How is she?"

Though Melanie hadn't accepted his advances, he didn't care at this moment.

"I'm her brother," Henry added.

"The patient has severe damage to her bile duct and pancreas, with significant internal bleeding mixed with bile. We've stopped the bleeding and repaired the bile leak. She needs to be monitored in the ICU for three days. If there are no complications, she'll be out of the woods."
