Chapter 620 Why?
A month ago, Clara used her connections to order a ten-year supply of liquid medicine, set to be delivered to Long Island Manor annually.
Kimberly was fine until she got the call; then she burst into tears.
Clara's kindness made Kimberly's heart ache.
"Mrs. Medici? What's wrong?" The caller was confused by Kimberly's sudden tears. "Hello, Mrs. Medici, are you okay?"
Seeing Kimberly's intense sorrow, Abella went to change out of her sterile gown and disinfect her hands.
Phillipe brought her a bowl of warm soup as soon as she came out. "Have some."
From a little past ten last night to a little past seven tonight, Abella had been busy for twenty-one hours straight, either saving Clara or Nicole.
She'd only had a bottle of milk and hadn't even had a chance to sit down.
Phillipe noticed her tired, red eyes and said, "Dinner was freshly prepared by the chef. Let me feed you a bit."
Abella drank a bowl of soup, already feeling weary. "I'll just say a few words to Winston and then leave."
"Okay." Phillipe thought Abella must be exhausted and not in the mood to eat, which made him even more concerned.
"Abella," Kimberly, seeing how worn out Abella looked, quickly wiped away her tears and said, "You must be exhausted. I'll have the driver take you home, and I'll ask the chef to make something you like for dinner. What would you like?"
"No need; Phillipe has already prepared something. But Winston." Abella glanced at Winston in the corner. He was still sitting on the ground, his shoulders shaking in sorrow.
"Winston," Kimberly looked at his sad state and said, "Don't worry about him. Mr. Wren and Mrs. Wren are very upset. Your father and I will stay with them. You should go home first."
"Thank you for your hard work," Beckett said apologetically.
"It's no trouble," she replied.
Abella went over to Winston, squatted beside him, and gently comforted him, "Cry as much as you need to. You'll feel better after letting it out."
Winston looked up with bloodshot eyes and asked, "Why?"
Why were they so cruel to Patricia, Diana, and Clara?
With three hostages, couldn't they have used them to force him, Nicole, or Abella to show up?
Why did they have to torture these three to death?
What benefit did that bring?
"In the past, they wanted to capture the people around us to force us to show up," Abella explained calmly, "But that's not the case anymore."
Winston, with red-rimmed eyes, looked at her, not understanding.
Abella added, "It seems they want the people around us to die one by one, making us suffer the pain of losing our loved ones."
Nicole was seen as a traitor. If they couldn't capture her, they could still make her suffer by targeting those around her.
And Abella had been targeted because she helped Nicole escape multiple times.
They wouldn't spare Winston either. It was because Winston and Nicole got together that Nicole wanted to leave and be with Winston forever.
"Their next target will be the people around me," Abella said calmly, as if it didn't concern her.
At that moment, Winston realized why Abella kept her identity as the Medici family heiress a secret. Helping Nicole already brought her enough trouble and danger. As a boss, she had to stay low-profile.
If everyone knew she was the Medici heiress, her friends and family would be targeted if they couldn't get to her.
Her family had bodyguards, and her subordinates secretly protected her parents. But not all her friends and family had constant protection. There would always be moments of vulnerability.
With her power, she could protect some people, but not everyone.
"We all need to be careful from now on," Winston said hoarsely. "I'll find them and avenge Nicole's parents and Clara."
"Okay," Abella said gently. "The antidote has been given to Nicole. It hasn't undergone final testing, but it's better than nothing. She'll wake up in 24 hours. The nurse said she heard your conversation with Mom and Dad. Think about how to comfort her."
"Thank you," Winston said, eyes red. "Without you, I wouldn't know what to do."
"Call me if you need anything."
Although Nicole wouldn't wake up tonight, Abella still mentioned it just in case.
"I'll head back now," Abella said, standing up. "I'll leave this to you."
"Don't worry."
Abella left with Phillipe.
After being busy for 21 hours straight, she finally checked her phone in the car.
There were many missed calls and unread messages, mostly from James, Vanessa, and Aimee.
James: [Abella, have you arrived at Long Island Manor? Are you tired after a twelve-hour flight?]
Vanessa: [You just left, and I already miss you. Do you like the gift? I didn't know what to get you on short notice. I heard your parents and James bought you a lot of clothes, shoes, and bags, so I didn't want to give you the same things. The box contains a little something from me. I hope you like it.]
Aimee: [Ms. Medici, have you arrived at Long Island Manor? Mrs. Harris has mentioned you several times since you left. I miss you too and look forward to your next visit!]
Abella replied to their messages first. She hadn't opened the small wooden box from Vanessa when her phone vibrated again.
It was a call from James. "Abella, I heard from your mother that something happened with the Wren family. You performed surgery on their daughter right after getting off the plane last night. Your mother also said you saved another person and have been busy for twenty-one hours straight."
Abella could hear the concern in James' voice and reassured him, "I'm not tired."
"Don't just focus on work and neglect yourself. Make sure to eat something, take a bath, and get some rest. Don't wear yourself out." Before James could finish, Vanessa took the phone from him. "Abella, let me nag you a bit more. Make sure to eat something to fill your stomach. If your hands are sore, have someone massage them. Take a good bath and relax in bed for a while. Don't wear yourself out, or I'll be heartbroken."
"Okay, I got it."
