Chapter 946 Exchange
She could even feel her soul slowly drifting away from her body.
"Lola, Lola..." A familiar voice was softly calling her.
Realizing it was Maria's voice, Lola struggled to open her eyes and search for Maria, but everything was pitch black. It felt like she was trapped in a cold, dark place where she couldn't see anything.
She was terrified and anxious. She wanted to ask where Maria was, but her mouth opened and no sound came out.
"Hang in there, you can't die."
Maria's voice was as gentle and firm as ever. "Hold on, you have to hold on..."
Tears rolled down Lola's cheeks. She desperately wanted to talk to Maria, but she had no strength left in her body.
She couldn't see Maria, couldn't touch her, didn't know where she was.
She wanted to tell Maria that the Medici family had abandoned her. They really didn't care about her, leaving her to die in the cold basement.
She wished someone could hold her.
She was so cold, and her whole body hurt, and she felt miserable.
She wanted to leave this place.
The Medici family only wanted to find Jacob, to uncover the truth about the hospital fire years ago, and to catch the person behind it. They didn't care about her life or death.
She felt so sad, and wanted to cry.
But Maria's voice was gone, replaced by the cold wind blowing over her body, making her shiver.
She felt like she was about to die.
If she died, would she be able to see Maria again and be with her?
Would someone finally listen to her, care for her, make her feel warm?
Meanwhile, Vanessa checked the time. There was only one hour left of the 24 hours the doctor had mentioned.
"I can't believe Jacob is really holding out. Does he think we will definitely save Lola?" Vanessa was surprised that the usually honest and diligent Jacob could be so cold-blooded.
The news was out, Lola had only one hour left to live, and he still hadn't shown up.
"Easter is coming, we can't let someone die in our house." David felt both unlucky and worried that her restless spirit would disturb their home.
After all, the elderly were more superstitious about these things. They didn't want the basement to become a place everyone avoided, a constant painful reminder.
In the living room, Beckett, Kimberly, Caleb, and Bonnie sat in silence.
Suddenly, a servant rushed in to report, "Mr. Medici, Mrs. Medici, Mr. Hall is here with Jacob."
"What did you say?" Kimberly couldn't believe it. Did he really manage to catch Jacob? Was it really Jacob or a trick?
"Let him in!" Beckett feared that if they delayed, Jacob might escape!
"Could there be a problem?" Vanessa was cautious. "Abella mentioned that Jacob is a leader of another organization. How could Henry catch him so easily? Our people have been searching for almost three days and nights without any leads. Could Jacob and Henry be staging this to rescue Lola?"
"Do you think he has a backup plan, maybe an ambush outside, or someone coming to rescue Jacob tonight?" David speculated.
"Could be."
Everyone nodded in agreement. It was a plausible scenario.
Given Henry's skills, it seemed unlikely he would catch Jacob before them.
"Let's hear him out," Kimberly said, settling into her seat next to Beckett as they watched the group enter.
Henry walked in first, followed by two of his men. He looked anxious.
The two men were holding an unconscious Jacob, really bringing him to them.
"How did you manage this?" Kimberly asked, incredulous.
Seeing Jacob tied up, Beckett checked his pulse. He was alive!
Henry didn't hide anything and explained honestly. "After I left Long Island Manor last night, I brought seven or eight doctors to my place. By dawn, I had them leave one by one, telling them to say Lola was gravely injured and wanted to see her father one last time. Soon after, a stranger contacted me."
Kimberly and Beckett were surprised. Henry had said he had a plan, and he really did!
He used Lola as bait to lure Jacob out.
"Jacob was indeed hiding and watching." Beckett looked at Henry. "So you set a trap and caught him?"
"Yes." Henry glanced at Jacob, feeling somewhat guilty. After all, this was Lola's father, and he hadn't gotten Lola's consent to use Jacob's life to save hers.
But he couldn't just watch her die.
"Mr. Medici, Mrs. Medici, please hand Lola over to me. I heard she has less than an hour left. Keeping her won't do you any good, and having her die here would be bad luck. Let me at least give her a proper burial, so she doesn't become a wandering spirit."
Henry's eyes were moist, his emotions stirred, but he forced them down.
He was deeply saddened and in pain, fearing Lola might really die.
But he spoke with a hoarse voice, sincerely, "You can deal with Jacob as you see fit. I won't interfere or secretly help him escape. I promise."
Perhaps fearing they wouldn't agree, he added, "Even if Lola survives, I swear I won't let her harm the Medici family. I'll guide her on the right path. If she has any chance of living..."
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, afraid he might cry.
"Please, give her to me." Henry bowed deeply, his voice choked, tears finally falling to the floor.
No one expected him to be so devoted to Lola.
The clock had already ticked away half an hour. Lola had less than thirty minutes left.
"A dying person is of no use to us. Since you want to bury her, bring her up," Kimberly ordered.
Henry didn't expect Kimberly to be so merciful. His eyes were red with gratitude as he looked at her.
