Chapter 517 Successor
Phillipe knew she was concerned about her subordinates, so he took the initiative to update her on the situation.
He sat next to the sofa, his gaze never leaving the girl. "Feeling better?"
"Yeah, much better."
Phillipe then resumed feeding her. "Once we're down here, I'll take you back to the States to see other doctors."
"It's just a minor injury, nothing serious."
Abella clearly didn't take her injuries seriously, but Phillipe said with concern, "The injuries are so severe, and you say it's nothing?"
"I agree with Phillipe. When we get back, you should see a few more doctors for a thorough check-up."
"You see, even Winston agrees."
Seeing the two of them so serious and unwilling to compromise, Abella could only relent. "Alright."
Their expressions finally softened upon hearing her agreement.
"Winston, any new discoveries from those two data packets?" Abella asked again.
"No," Winston said gently, "For now, focus on resting. Phillipe already stood up for you with your subordinates today. Let's consider this matter settled. From now on, focus on healing, studying, and dating. I give my blessing to you and Phillipe."
Phillipe's eyes softened, finally getting Winston's approval.
"Seems like you've found something new," Abella smiled and said, "Not planning to tell us? Is it dangerous?"
"No, you're overthinking it."
"Winston," Abella said with interest, "I already backed up those data packets before handing them to you. If you don't tell me, I'll check them myself."
"Abella!"
Perhaps not expecting Abella to have done this, Winston became anxious. "This matter involves many parties. I don't want you two to get further involved."
"Do you think we can't handle it?" Abella asked.
Winston replied, "It's not about capability. This matter involves too many people and is more complicated than we imagined. I want you and Phillipe to live your lives well and not get hurt like this again."
Knowing how much it pained him to see Abella hurt like this.
"Are you afraid of involving us further?" Abella seemed to guess something. "Is the opposing force very powerful?"
'More powerful than Phillipe?' She thought.
"Abella, listen, don't get involved anymore."
Winston's words made Abella and Phillipe exchange a glance. Phillipe seemed to agree with her thoughts and gently said, "Check it out."
He also wanted to know who could make Winston so wary.
"Phillipe??" Winston didn't expect Phillipe to indulge Abella, instantly scolding, "Can you listen to me once?"
"No," They said in unison, and Abella even took out her phone, ready to open the data packets.
"Abella," Winston, seeing they wouldn't listen, could only say, "This matter involves multiple countries and political figures. I'm not scaring you. Whether you agree or not, I forbid you from getting involved."
It was no longer something a few people could handle, or something a single gang could manage.
Today, Phillipe mobilized nearly half of the Umbra League's forces to avenge Abella. When he returned to the States, there would be many traps waiting for him.
If they continued investigating, they would uncover a significant portion of international forces.
Abella understood and said, "Therefore, the Umbra League is essentially the right-hand of these people. These two data packets are not only evidence of the Umbra League's crimes but also threaten these people's positions. Is that why the Umbra League is desperate to retrieve this evidence? Because Nicole has this evidence, she bacome the target?"
"In short, promise me neither of you won't get involved anymore." Winston didn't plan to elaborate.
He knew Abella was smart, but this matter involved too many parties beyond their capabilities. If they got involved, it wouldn't just be minor obstacles.
At worst, it could lead to the destruction of their families and drag everyone around them into hell.
"One reason they are hunting Nicole is because she has this evidence. What are the other reasons?" Abella asked again.
Winston fell silent, surprised by Abella's perceptiveness; nothing seems to escape her notice. After a pause, he said, "She was exceptionally gifted and unique from a young age. The leader of the organization liked her very much and groomed her as a successor."
As a successor, she didn't have to do everything herself like the other lower-level members.
Simply put, Nicole hadn't done anything heinous.
The leader often took her to various internal activities, and she only needed to attend special training courses designed for her.
Because she always performed outstandingly, she was highly valued by the leaders.
Despite her young age, she had the highest-level access card, the silver key. After the leader's death, she was the only one qualified to enter the Umbra League's private areas.
The symbol necklace she placed in Winston's amulet was her token as a successor, her identity symbol.
Anyone who saw that necklace had to obey her as if they were seeing the leader.
The reason she gave such a valuable necklace to Winston was to protect him from the Umbra League's trouble. This token necklace could save his life.
Abella understood and said, "So they are searching for Nicole not to make her return as a successor but to take her token and replace her? And destroy all the evidence she has about the organization?"
Winston nodded and said, "That's right."
Therefore, Nicole had to hide. If they found her and took back the token, neither her nor Winston's lives would be safe.
"What's with the poison in her body?" Abella asked again.
"I reviewed the first part of the data packet. It said Nicole wanted to leave the organization, which angered the leaders. After many disputes, they finally agreed but punished her as a traitor," Winston explained.
That was, she had to drink the most toxic slow-acting poison within the organization. After leaving, her fate was left to chance.
"Did Nicole drink it?"
Winston nodded heavily. She drank it all, not expecting the poison to act so quickly.
And each time, it was more painful.
"After seven months of our relationship, her poison started acting up. She endured the pain for half a year before she couldn't hide it anymore and chose to leave," Winston replied.
Winston had never expected it to be as Abella guessed. Nicole didn't stop loving him, nor did she like someone else; she was driven to the brink by the torment of the poison, leaving her with no choice but to flee.
Moreover, at that time, the organization went back on their word. They initially promised Nicole that after taking the poison, she could leave, and they wouldn't interfere with her life.
But the organization kept hunting her. Initially, they tried to persuade her to return as a successor. When they realized she was determined, they wanted to take her token and replace her.
Not only a part of the Umbra League's internal members, but many external forces also only recognized the token, not the successor.
