Chapter 799 Phillipe Arrives
"Yo, Abella, check out who's here," Rodolfo said, strolling over with Ryan, both grinning like Cheshire cats.
Abella blinked in surprise. "Mr. Bourbon? You guys know each other?"
Ryan chuckled, flashing a big smile. "Yeah, it's like destiny or something. I used to be tight with Clifford, and through him, I met his crew."
Abella nodded, piecing it together. So that's how it went down.
"Clifford always bragged about this amazing student he had, even better than Phillipe. He couldn't stop talking about you. I thought he was just blowing smoke." Ryan had only heard about Abella from Clifford back then, so he didn't take it seriously.
"And now, turns out that student is you," Ryan said, grinning wider. "And now Abella's my granddaughter-in-law. Crazy, right?"
"Hold up, that's not a done deal yet. Whether she's your granddaughter-in-law is still up in the air. Look at you, all excited," Clifford laughed heartily.
Ryan pulled out a gift. "Clarence, no need for a big speech. It's your birthday today. Happy birthday! When Abella gets hitched and has kids, we'll all pitch in to help with the baby."
"Haha, that's awesome," Clarence said, always wanting to see Abella settle down. "But is Phillipe reliable? Abella can't be pushed around."
"If Phillipe messes up, we'll each break one of his legs."
Abella's eyes widened in shock.
"Haha." Clarence grabbed a glass of wine and handed it to Ryan, wanting to toast.
Ryan glanced at Abella and then waved his hand. "My doc said no booze. Still recovering."
"Abella doesn't let me drink either, but this wine's pretty light," Clarence said, looking at Abella. "Mr. Bourbon rarely visits and even brought a gift. Shouldn't we toast him?"
Ryan looked at Abella, waiting for her reaction. "He toasted me. Wouldn't it be rude if I didn't drink?"
"You can drink," Abella said, making Ryan and Clarence light up. They quickly clinked glasses and, before Abella could change her mind, downed the wine in one go.
A bunch of guests saw Ryan finish his wine and chat with Abella. Not wanting to miss out, they rushed over.
"Mr. Bourbon, so happy to see you tonight. Let me toast you first," Faye said, finishing her wine with style. "Think I could get a quick game of Go with you? Just a minute."
One minute was so short that if Ryan refused, it would seem kinda rude.
"Mr. Bourbon, you into Go? I've been into it since I was a kid, though I'm not as good as KnightStrategist," Enid said, glancing at Abella. "But my teachers always said my style is unique. If you ever need a game buddy, hit me up."
Ryan looked a bit surprised and turned to Abella. "Stringless?"
He then looked at the other elders. "Wait, Abella is KnightStrategist?"
The elders nodded, their eyes twinkling with interest.
Ryan flashed back to that time when Calla gifted her hubby an expensive Go set. Abella instantly called it out as a fake. Calla was all fired up, refusing to believe it. Abella then whipped out the real deal and handed it to Vilma.
That Go set was a gift from Clarence to Abella, which she then passed on to Vilma.
Clarence had been bummed about it for ages.
Ryan never thought she'd be KnightStrategist.
But she was. She really was.
"Abella, you never stop surprising me!" Ryan said, giving her shoulder a friendly pat. "We gotta play a few games sometime to keep things interesting."
Enid, realizing she just set up a golden moment for Abella, quickly chimed in, "Besides Go, I’m all about playing the piano and writing songs. If Mr. Bourbon has some free time and wants to jam, write some lyrics, or dive into ancient culture, hit me up."
"In the arts department, Faye's pretty awesome too," Dawn said, stepping out from the crowd with a warm smile. "Even though she's young, she's already nailed the eighth grade in piano. She also paints and does calligraphy."
"Betsy’s no slouch either," Noe said, stepping forward, ready to brag about his granddaughter, when a commotion broke out in the crowd.
Phillipe had arrived!
Dressed to the nines in a sharp suit, standing tall and confident, he had an aura that turned heads.
"Is that Phillipe?"
The crowd around Ryan scattered, all rushing towards Phillipe.
Ryan turned to Clarence. "I brought Phillipe along for everyone to meet. No hard feelings, right?"
Clarence's invite was just for Ryan.
But Ryan had brought Phillipe along anyway.
Clarence, catching on to his plan, smiled. "I see you’re just trying to give them more time together."
Ryan, not expecting to be caught so easily, grinned wide.
Abella watched Phillipe getting swarmed by the crowd, a slight smile playing on her lips.
Betsy, dreaming of marrying Phillipe, sprinted towards him. Just as she was about to reach him, she tripped and fell right towards Phillipe.
Whether Phillipe helped her or not, she’d end up in his arms.
But in the next second, Phillipe smoothly sidestepped, dodging her completely.
"Ah." Betsy hit the grass hard, unable to get up from the pain.
She never thought Phillipe wouldn’t even try to help her!
Colleen, seeing Betsy’s embarrassment, was secretly thrilled. She quickly grabbed a nearby cake and ran to Phillipe.
"Phillipe, hey, I’m Colleen. Mr. Bourbon held me when I was little," Colleen said, offering the cake. "You just got here and haven’t tried the birthday cake yet. It’s pretty good tonight. Give it a taste."
