Chapter 680 I'll Take Care of You from Now On
This chick had to know exactly where her grandparents were headed next, so they had someone set up shop there ahead of time.
Maybe all the trouble her grandparents ran into on the road was totally man-made.
After hanging up, a few servants were giving Abella those eager puppy-dog eyes. After a bit, one of them piped up, "Ms. Medici, only a handful of folks knew about Mr. David Harris and Mrs. Harris' travel plans back then."
"Who are they?" Abella was kinda shocked, not thinking the servants would be in the loop.
"All family members, plus Mr. David Harris and Mrs. Harris' friends."
"Since they know so many people, every time they go somewhere, they gotta deal with all the local social stuff, which makes their trips a drag."
"I once heard Mrs. Harris say in a voice message to some friends that she was sick of all the social obligations."
"Give me their names."
Abella whipped out her phone, ready to jot down the names, when it buzzed again. It was Sam calling.
Sam said, "Ms. Medici, you must be up by now. I'm here to report! We nabbed those guys in black, but they're tight-lipped. Lucky we had the meds you left; otherwise, they'd be goners."
Sam had roughed them up, and seeing they were on the brink, he quickly sprinkled the medicine powder Abella had given him on their wounds.
Abella heard his slightly breathless voice and said coolly, "You need to work out more."
"No, Ms. Medici..."
"Get me results ASAP."
Before Sam could finish, he heard the call cut off.
Last night, he had fought those silver-masked dudes solo, barely made it out, then grilled them till morning without a wink of sleep or a bite to eat. Wasn't it normal to be a bit winded?
But hearing Abella say that, he still grabbed a subordinate and asked, "Do I need to hit the gym?"
"Huh?" The subordinate looked at his abs. "Sam, I have no clue what you're talking about."
In the hospital, Caleb listened to Jacques' report, not expecting that Abella had gone through such a wild night. If it weren't for her quick thinking and smarts, a regular person would've been toast.
"I'll keep grilling these guys. They must know where Gregory is and who's pulling the strings," Jacques said.
Caleb nodded.
Jacques added, "Also, our people said a crew came last night and snatched those men in black. They were super cocky, totally ignoring us, and said their boss might let you live if he's in a good mood, but if not, we'd be the ones with no place to hide."
Caleb was floored by their nerve.
In all of Verdania, no one had dared to openly mess with his authority for ages.
"Mr. Harris, I'll definitely find out who these punks are and get those men in black back. Don't worry."
Seeing Jacques' loyalty, Caleb said warmly, "You stayed with Abella all night. Go rest now. I'll have others handle the rest."
"Mr. Harris..."
"That's an order."
Jacques knew Caleb was worried about his health, but he wasn't tired and still wanted to help out.
Caleb added, "There are a lot of things that will need your personal touch later. You can't burn out here."
Hearing Caleb's words, Jacques felt grateful. "Mr. Harris, I can go back, but you..."
"I'm fine. Someone else will come to take over soon."
Only then did Jacques leave, feeling a bit more at ease.
Caleb stared at the person lying in the hospital bed, deep in thought, vaguely recalling someone suspicious.
Meanwhile, Lola checked out the photos and videos Jacob sent her, and tears instantly welled up in her eyes.
These pics and clips showed Maria's new work environment.
When Lola saw the once high-spirited Maria now serving dishes in a restaurant, she couldn't hold back her tears anymore.
Jacob: [I had the day off and went out to eat with friends. Ran into Maria by chance. Knowing you were worried about her, I secretly took these for you. Maria doesn't know I was there!]
Jacob: [The Medici Group's various businesses probably won't hire her anymore, so she's stuck working in this tiny restaurant. I saw the job posting at the door—waiter salary is like eight hundred bucks a month.]
Lola's tears flowed again. She knew Maria used to pull in ten grand a month at the Medici Manor!
If it wasn't for Abella, Maria would still be at the Medici Manor, not suffering like this.
Just then, Jacob sent another video.
Lola opened it and saw a rude woman slamming the table. "Is this the dish I ordered? Are you blind or deaf? I clearly ordered fries, look at what you brought me!"
"Sorry," Maria kept apologizing, "Too many orders, I got mixed up. I'm new here, please forgive me."
"How is it my problem that you're new? I paid to eat here, and now I have to deal with this? Bring me the right dish! For free!"
"Ma'am, I don't decide if it's free or not," Maria said awkwardly.
The woman angrily splashed water from her cup onto Maria's face. "What are you standing there for? Get lost! Waiting for me to complain about you?"
Maria kept bowing and apologizing, then took the wrong dish and walked away. Just as she reached the corner, a boss-like figure asked about the situation and scolded Maria.
Lola watched, her anger boiling. 'What kind of people are these! It's just a wrong dish, is it worth this?'
Lola quickly called Jacob, telling him to get Maria out of there and not let her work there anymore!
In the end, Lola couldn't sit still and went straight to the restaurant, only to find that Maria had already been fired. She was sitting by a flower bed not far from the restaurant, with her luggage at her feet, her clothes still wet from the water, looking a bit disheveled.
Jacob saw her coming and said heavily, "Ms. Medici, you're here. Maria worked all day, got her pay docked because of this, and was kicked out."
"Outrageous." Lola clenched her fists. "This is straight-up bullying!"
Hearing the familiar voice, Maria looked up and immediately started crying.
Lola also started crying, draped her coat over Maria, and hugged her.
Maria's body was a bit stiff. Only then did Lola realize something was wrong. After asking, she found out that Maria had washed dishes all day at her previous job, hurt her back, and was fired for being too slow. She finally found this restaurant job, but was fired again for serving the wrong dish.
"Maria, don't work anymore. I'll take care of you from now on."
"No, I can't do that. I'm already grateful that Ms. Medici is so close to me now."
Jacob saw the two of them crying and hugging each other, a look of satisfaction flashing in his eyes.
