"Less than 10%," Abella said, "Given her condition, it's tough for her to survive."
Winston felt even more distressed.
"Also," Abella continued, standing by the ICU door, "even if I were there, I couldn't have saved Nicole's parents. Nicole couldn't prepare the funeral herself.
Abella pushed open the ICU door. "I'll check on Nicole."
Outside, Kimberly asked Winston, "What's going on with your girlfriend?"
"She was poisoned."
"Why?"
Winston decided to tell them everything.
Kimberly and Beckett were shocked and furious.
Kimberly snapped, "So, the last time you took Abella to Sunhavenia, it wasn't for fun but to find your girlfriend? You got Abella and Clara involved in this mess! Winston, what were you thinking? With your status, you could have any girl. Why her?"
"Mom, keep your voice down," Winston said, worried Nicole might hear.
"When you told me you had a girlfriend, I was happy. But her background, the people she knows, and the dangers she faces are not our world!" Kimberly was livid. "Do you see? Her parents' fate could be yours and Abella's!"
"Mom, it's not that serious."
Kimberly added, "Yes, you can protect yourself and her now, but what about your family and friends? There will be times when you're not careful. Do you want their fate to be the same as her parents'? You know the background of those people! It's not something you and Abella can handle!"
Kimberly couldn't understand why Winston liked this girl. Was he tired of the elegant ladies he grew up with and wanted something different?
"And her health," Kimberly continued. "Nicole is so sick. I can't accept a sickly daughter-in-law."
"Abella has a way. She's working on an antidote."
"Abella, Abella, everything is Abella! How much trouble have you caused her? She came back to reunite with her family, not to be ordered around! And Clara is still in the ICU, her life hanging by a thread."
"Mom, Clara's situation was an accident."
"If it weren't for Nicole's dangerous connections, her parents, Clara, and even herself wouldn't be in this mess."
Yes, Clara was kind-hearted and wanted to help Patricia and Diana when they were in danger.
But if Nicole were an ordinary girl who didn't provoke anyone, would this have happened?
"I don't agree with your relationship," Kimberly said bluntly.
"I, I listen to your mother," Beckett added, avoiding Winston's sad expression.
"Dad, Mom, you don't understand Nicole. She's amazing. I will only be with her!"
"The Medici family won't let her marry in," Kimberly said firmly. "Give up on this. Even if you stay single, it's better than bringing chaos to the family. When she gets better, talk to her." Kimberly turned to leave.
"Mom, Nicole has so many good qualities."
"Don't you get it? I don't want anyone ending up like Clara, covered in scars on an operating table. Those people are dangerous. Marrying her is like placing time bombs in our home. Can you handle one bad person? What about a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand?"
She didn't want to experience the pain of losing loved ones. Was that too much to ask?
"Mom, I know what you're worried about. I'll handle it."
"How? Can you guarantee you'll eliminate all the threats? Winston, if you're tired of rich girls and want to marry an ordinary girl, I support you. But I can't let someone dangerous marry into the Medici family."
Kimberly wasn't worried about herself but feared for her loved ones.
"Calm down," Beckett tried to comfort her, but Kimberly left, resolute.
Beckett turned to Winston, "Clara used to visit us often, caring for us. She brought things, kept us company, and even helped with my back pain. I'm telling you this because, even if you don't have feelings for her, such a sincere girl is now in the ICU because of your girlfriend's background. Shouldn't you care? Consider her parents' feelings."
Beckett hurried to catch up with Kimberly.
Winston felt the weight of reality, leaning weakly against the wall.
Inside the ICU, tears silently streamed down Nicole's face.
She had heard everything.
She knew it was her fault, bringing so much trouble. If it weren't for her, her adoptive parents wouldn't have died.
Thinking of her loving adoptive parents, her tears wouldn't stop. Her emotions grew more agitated, and her heart ached more and more.
"Dr. Medici, Dr. Medici," a nurse noticed something was wrong and quickly called out, wiping Nicole's tears. "Don't cry."
