Chapter 682 A Chaotic Place
Half an hour later, Caleb felt a twinge of guilt seeing Abella roll up to the hospital. "Abella, you didn't go out to have fun or crash at home? Why'd you come back here?"
Abella shrugged, "I came to Verdania for Grandpa's illness. Uncle Caleb, you pulled an all-nighter for him. As part of the fam, I gotta do my bit too."
Caleb gave her a nod of approval. Man, this girl had guts and a sense of duty way beyond her years. She really impressed him.
"Don't hang around too long. We got bodyguards here. Do whatever you want, just chill."
"Thanks, Uncle Caleb."
"Alright, I'm gonna go freshen up."
"Cool."
Abella watched Caleb leave. Four bodyguards were left in the room, two on the terrace, and others guarding the door and the hallway.
After last night's drama, and with Abella sticking around today, the bodyguards were on edge, barely daring to breathe.
"Chill out, guys. Pretend I'm not even here." Abella checked on her grandpa. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, she pulled out her phone and started handling some work nearby.
The bodyguards, seeing she was pretty laid-back, secretly exhaled in relief.
By noon, someone brought lunch. Abella ate boxed meals with everyone else.
The bodyguards were floored. They'd never seen such a down-to-earth rich girl before, and they all looked at Abella with newfound respect.
In the evening, her subordinate called. "Ms. Medici, the folks you asked me to check on WhatsApp, they all seem to be tied to your family. You don't think the restaurant incident the other day is linked to them, do you?"
"Nah," Abella stepped out to the terrace, motioning the two bodyguards to head inside, and then said calmly, "I just wanna know if my grandparents had any beef or run-ins with these people before. The list I gave you includes both relatives and friends of my grandparents."
"But I checked the first two people, and they had a good relationship with your grandpa. It doesn't add up for them to harm him."
"Seeing ain't always believing. Haven't you learned that by now?"
"Yes, Ms. Medici, I'll keep digging!"
After her subordinate hung up, he kept on with his investigation.
The list was handed to Abella by a servant during breakfast, saying only these people knew about her grandparents' trip.
After the call, Abella stood on the terrace, gazing at the beautiful garden outside.
A while later, Tony called her. "Ms. Medici, the food stall near the desert you asked me to check, the lady owner is still MIA, but we found her husband. He's in Amber townlet, not far from you, about a half-hour drive."
"Got a detailed address?" Abella asked, keeping her cool.
"Yeah, I'll text it to you in a bit. But Ms. Medici," Tony couldn't help but warn, "that town's got terrible security, it's a mess, especially with a market there that often sells rare stuff, drawing a sketchy crowd. People get robbed there, like, twice a day sometimes."
Abella raised an eyebrow, surprised at how wild the place was.
Tony added, "Ms. Medici, if you drive there, don't leave your bag on the passenger seat. Someone could easily smash the window and grab it. If you're walking, dress down and avoid anything with flashy brand logos, or you'll be asking for trouble."
Abella was intrigued and grinned. "Is it really that bad?"
"I'm dead serious. Also, don't carry anything in your hands, especially your phone, or you'll find out what it means to be a target."
Abella chuckled. "Is that place really that wild?"
"Ms. Medici, remember a few years back, I griped to you about something? You sent me to handle some business near the Verdania border, and as I drove through that town, some folks who looked like refugees suddenly blocked my car. One dude lay on my hood, and the other four stood at my windows, demanding cash. I didn't have any on me, and they threatened to trash my car and mirrors if I didn't pay. It really ticked me off! If it weren't for the fact that the mission had to be low-key, I would've gotten out and taught them a lesson!"
Abella smiled. "So, what happened then?"
"I pulled out my weapon, and they backed off, but before they left, they smashed my mirror and scratched my car. It was infuriating!"
Abella vaguely remembered Tony complaining about something like this a few years ago.
"In short, they're a bunch of brainless thugs. Reporting them is pointless. The law there is a joke, so they act like they own the place," Tony sighed. "Ms. Medici, even if you don't flaunt your wealth, I'm still worried. Your face alone is too eye-catching. I'm afraid a lot of people will follow you. If they just rob you, that's one thing, but I'm worried a few strong guys might pin you down and search you, seeing how beautiful you are."
"Do you think they can pin me down?" Abella laughed. "Don't worry, I'll be careful."
"How about taking Sam and the others with you?"
Sam was also in Verdania, helping Abella interrogate some men in black, but they hadn't gotten any results yet.
"If I need him for such a small thing, then I'm not fit to be the leader. Don't worry, I got this. Hanging up now." Abella put away her phone, walked into the ward, and told the bodyguards, "I'm heading out for a bit. Please take care of my grandpa."
"Ms. Medici, don't worry. We'll protect Mr. David Harris with our lives."
Abella nodded, glanced at her grandpa, who was sleeping peacefully, and then left.
Meanwhile, Jacques approached Caleb. "Mr. Harris, our people have checked. Charlotte, Margot, and the other four maids don't have wolf head tattoos below their collarbones."
Caleb's eyes narrowed. 'So, these people aren't from the Wolf Clique?'
"I told you to rest, why are you here again?"
"Mr. Harris, I rested from morning till afternoon, slept for five hours, that's enough. Thanks for your concern."
Caleb didn't expect Jacques to be so dedicated, and his impression of him improved. "What else did you find?"
"In the afternoon, I used some force. At first, they wouldn't say anything, but after I threatened their families, one of the maids broke down. She said they had all been helped by Gregory before, so they were willing to work for him."
"Did you find out Gregory's whereabouts?" Caleb asked calmly.
