Chapter 378 Outshining Modern medicine

Over the next few days, Abella continued to toil away in the lab despite the growing rumors outside.

"Classes started nearly a month ago, and that straight-A student has only been to a few. Thinks she’s too good for us now, huh?"

"The professors are really nurturing her talent. They didn’t even call her in privately. The whole class adores her."

"Big deal, she just won a flag during training that got her whole class a day off. What’s so extraordinary about that?"

...

While passing by the restroom, Clare overheard these conversations and couldn't resist throwing in her own jab, "Sure, it's no big deal. But I don’t see anyone from your class achieving that, do I?"

"You..." The girl with the short hair was griping to a friend when she saw Clare and couldn't help but say, "I know you... You're friends with Abella. We were talking about Abella. Why does it concern you?"

"Well, since you mentioned I’m her friend, anything concerning her concerns me too. On the contrary, it shouldn't concern you whether she attends school or not. That's none of your business!"

"You..." The short-haired girl fumed and was at a loss for words.

Clare finished washing her hands and was about to exit the restroom when something seemed to strike her mind. She paused in her footsteps and said, "Oh right, Abella doesn’t need to attend classes because she has the luxury not to. Not everyone needs to warm a seat in a classroom to learn."

Abella was such a natural talent that spending time in a classroom was a waste of time for her.

The only thing that truly drew her to Medical University was the high-end equipment in the labs and the opportunity to collaborate with Grandpa Wilson on new pharmaceutical formulas.

After all, it wasn’t reasonable to expect an elderly man to keep running experiments with a young lady like her day in and day out, was it?

Leaving the restroom, Clare returned to her seat in the cafeteria and complained, "There are all kinds of people in this world, don't you think?"

"What happened?" Abella looked up, noticing the annoyed expression on Clare's face, which strangely made her look endearing.

After Clare relayed the incident, Josie chimed in, unable to restrain herself, "I've been finding those people really annoying lately too. Maybe it's because Abella's perfect scores attract too much attention."

"I feel the same. The last time I was on the elevator to room 3303, I overheard someone saying that Abella's been skipping classes... and I was like, what's it to them whether she attends classes or not?!"

Thinking it over, as it had been a while since she last attended, Abella asked, "What's the next class?"

"Pharmacology."

It mainly covered the effects and treatments of Eastern and Western medicine. Because the theories overlap, students of both traditional medicine and modern medicine attend the class together.

"Come on, let’s make an appearance."

Clare was taken aback upon hearing Abella's decision to attend the class. "Hey, wait for me..."

Today's pharmacology professor was a kindly old man with a neat appearance and glasses perched on his nose.

With the classroom so full, roll-call was impossible, so he simply had the class presidents tally the numbers. Discovering that everyone from the traditional medicine class had turned up, he was rather surprised.

"The straight-A student is here? Let me see which young lady it is," the professor said, glancing over the top of his glasses with a genial smile. He seemed curious to spot the top scorer.

"Professor Thomas, the straight-A student is right here!"

"Here! Here!"

"That's our class's straight-A student."

Members of the traditional medicine class were eager to introduce Abella to Professor Thomas, while those from the modern medicine class scoffed nonchalantly.

Abella stood up under the professor’s gaze and greeted him politely, "Good day, Professor, I'm Abella."

"Finally, you made it to class..." the old professor grinned, welcoming a naturally beautiful young woman who seemed bright just by her appearance.

The students of the modern medicine class thought the professor would have a bone to pick with Abella. But to their surprise, the next moment, he warmly asked, "With your stellar grades, why choose to attend Medical University and pursue a career in medicine?"

Without hesitation, Abella replied, "I want to save lives."

"There are many ways to save lives, and modern medicine is one of them..."

"Being a doctor is a noble tradition passed down through generations, and someone should honor and carry it forward."

"Very well, a student with a vision... Please, take a seat." The professor smiled again, looking around the room. "Some want to study traditional medicine, and others are passionate about modern medicine. Today, let's discuss the different approaches to treating a common cold in contemporary medicine..."

He addressed both groups of students, "I'd like to hear from the modern medicine class first. What do you typically do when you catch a cold? Let's hear what Jocelyn would do."

From the crowd, a short-haired girl stood up, the same one who had been bad-mouthing Abella in the restroom.

"When I catch a cold, I usually knock it out with a dose of Bupleurum tenue, unlike those in traditional medicine who fuss over picking herbs and brewing concoctions... Am I right, straight-A student?"

Laughter erupted among her classmates in modern medicine.

The traditional medicine students were indignant but struggled to find a counterargument.

It was Abella who spoke up calmly, "Hasn’t anyone told you Bupleurum tenue is considered a type of herbal medicine?"

Jocelyn was taken aback, then burst into laughter. "Did you hear that? The straight-A student claims Bupleurum tenue is herbal medicine. In her world, even instant powders are considered herbal."

The ridicule continued among the modern medicine students.

"I thought a straight-A student would be more knowledgeable. What a basic mistake."

"Isn't this common knowledge? And she's at the top of the class? I'm starting to doubt whether her SAT scores are even real."

"It appears even the top students have their limits."

"But it is herbal medicine," Abella replied calmly and confidently, "Bupleurum tenue contains a composition of herbs such as bupleurum, ginseng, pinellia, scutellaria, ginger, and licorice."

The entire traditional medicine class was stunned, looking at her with newfound admiration.

"It's mainly used in modern medicine to treat influenza, hepatitis, gastritis, and other illnesses."

The modern medicine class, checking their phones in a rush, found she was right. It was indeed herbal medicine!

"Jocelyn, it really is herbal!" someone whispered, urging her to think of alternative medicines.

"I don’t rely on Bupleurum tenue much. I usually take Cold Medicine Granules more..." Jocelyn barely finished her sentence.

Abella's lips curved into a smile, " Cold Medicine Granules is a compound preparation of herbal and modern medicine, consisting of ingredients like evodia lepta, holly root, bidens biternate, peppermint oil, wild chrysanthemum, chlorpheniramine maleate, caffeine, and acetaminophen. It’s not purely herbal medicine, nor is it solely modern medicine; it’s categorized as a combined cold remedy of both herbal and pharmaceutical components."

Jocelyn was stunned, and so was everyone from the modern medicine class.

Abella continued, "When you're down with a cold, it's still best to opt for traditional medicine because conventional modern medicine usually involves taking cold medications and antibiotics, which can lead to prolonged treatments and potential side effects like antibiotic resistance."

Everyone listened intently as if they were hearing some revelatory truths.

"Traditional medicine focuses on treating the root cause. They use herbal remedies to reduce inflammation and detoxify while also working to boost bodily functions and enhance immunity."
