Chapter 773 Indirect Threat
Abella had always dodged taking up her family legacy, making Clarence chase her all over the globe. Now, he was even throwing threats her way.
"Alright, that's a wrap. What's up with this signal? Can't hear squat again. Whatever, I'm hanging up." Clarence, probably scared Abella might back out, quickly ended the call and bragged in the group chat that Abella was gonna show up at his birthday bash tomorrow.
[For real? Don't mess with me! If you don't share that tequila from last time, I'll just chill in my rocking chair and let your 60th be a solo gig.]
[If you give him the tequila and don't show me that glowing pearl you got, I'm out!]
[Admit you lost to me in Go, and maybe I'll think about it.]
[Unless you treat me to lunch for a month, I'm not promising anything.]
Seeing their demands, Clarence shot back: [Come if you want!]
Everyone was shook. Was Abella really gonna show?
Every year, no matter how swamped she was, Abella always made it to their birthday parties.
Even now, back with the Medici family, she still cared about them.
Thinking this, they all changed their tune.
[For old times' sake, I'll drag myself to your party tomorrow night.]
[If Abella doesn't show and we don't either, you'd be embarrassed. I'll come, at least to blow out the candles with you.]
[Count me in too.]
[If everyone's going, I guess I should too.]
Seeing this, Clarence got even cockier: [No tequila, no glowing pearl, and you want me to treat you for a month? Keep dreaming! Admit I'm not as good as you? In your dreams!]
Everyone noticed that with Abella coming, Clarence got a major confidence boost. Before, he was all mopey in the chat, hinting for them to remind Abella about his birthday.
The attitude shift was wild!
[You think we wanna go? We're just avoiding the gossip.]
[Yeah, you think we wanna sing you a birthday song? So lame, I'd never sing it out loud!]
[I just wanna play some Go with Hugo, and your place is convenient.]
[My place has no power, so I'm crashing at yours for the wifi.]
Seeing their stubbornness, Clarence clapped back: [Tomorrow, I'm the star. Abella's coming for me. Don't bug her, stay away, and definitely don't mention taking on students.]
[Clarence, if you got the guts, don't bring it up either. Don't make a wish about it, I know you want Abella to help you out! You're just using her loyalty.]
[Clarence, didn't think you'd stoop this low. I misjudged you.]
[Everyone's got a birthday. If you try to guilt-trip Abella, I'll wish at my party for her not to be your student.]
Clarence went dead silent.
Meanwhile, Lola was so freaked out that the servants had to bring her lunch to her room.
When Bonnie showed up at her door, she heard from the staff that Lola's hands were shaking so bad she could barely hold a fork.
She looked like a scared kitten, still spooked from whatever went down last night.
"Lola," Bonnie knocked and then just barged in, "I'm coming in."
Lola looked up with wide, anxious eyes and mumbled, "Aunt Bonnie."
"Still shaken up?" Bonnie saw her curled up on a tiny sofa, too scared to even put her feet on the floor. She looked genuinely terrified.
"This room's like a cave. Let's get some light in here." Bonnie walked over and yanked the curtains open.
The sudden brightness made Lola flinch, squinting like she'd just seen a ghost.
Bonnie plopped down on the sofa across from her. Noticing the barely touched food, she asked, "Not hungry?"
"Mm." Lola hugged her knees tighter, her long hair hiding her scared little face.
"What's up with the chefs? They know you’re freaked out and still make food that looks like a crime scene."
Lola glanced at the food and looked even more terrified.
Seeing her reaction, Bonnie pressed on, "Lola, do you think people die with their eyes open or closed?"
Lola stared at Bonnie, shocked. "Aunt Bonnie, what are you talking about?"
"Nothing, just making conversation. Don't overthink it." Bonnie smiled sweetly.
But Lola couldn't bring herself to look at her anymore.
"Lola, if you remember anything from last night, let me know," Bonnie said softly. "I've got people looking into it, but no luck yet. You know I'm biased. When you were little and someone messed with you, I took care of it. You know how I roll."
Lola looked at the elegant Bonnie with her short hair and red lips. Her voice was gentle, her smile was pretty, but there was a warning hidden in her words.
"I'm the same in business. If I give a competitor a chance and they blow it, they don't get another one." Bonnie's smile got even sweeter.
But Lola couldn't meet her eyes.
"I've said it before, it's tough for Abella to come back to this family. I just want to make things right. But she almost got hurt on my watch. Someone tried to hire a hitman to take her out. If I find out who, what should I do? Expose them, let them rot in prison, or chop them up and feed them to the fish?"
Lola found it harder and harder to read the smiling Bonnie in front of her. She was so classy, so polite, but her words were ice-cold.
"Lola, you've been in Verdania for a while now, and we haven't really talked. Now that you're leaving, got anything you wanna say to me?"
