Chapter 717 Fainting
David crushed the drink can in his hand. If he had felt even a hint of softness earlier, it was long gone now.
All he felt was coldness and resentment.
For years, he had genuinely treated them well, but to them, it was worth less than a bit of money and shares.
His life, and the lives of Caleb, Bonnie, and Abella, meant less to them than those shares!
No wonder his father, on his deathbed, had repeatedly warned David not to bring his brothers into the company.
Turns out, his old man had already seen through their nature, knowing they were insatiably greedy and would one day make a grave mistake.
"It's all my fault for being too merciful and trusting them back then," David muttered to Abella. "When I first inherited the company, I was busting my ass day and night. They came to me, saying they wanted to intern at the company and promised not to take any money, just to help share my burden. I really bought that crap back then!"
Looking back now, he felt like a fool.
"Grandpa, you trusted them, and in my eyes, that trust was even more precious. It's just that they didn't cherish it."
Hearing this, David looked up at Abella, his nose suddenly tingling. "They've lived so many years but don't see things as clearly as you do."
After a moment of silence, David added, "The family was doing well, but now it's falling apart. I wonder if my father in heaven would blame me for bringing them into the company."
Abella comforted him, "This family had problems from the start. You just didn't see it and thought the family was still united and loving. Maybe in your eyes it was, but in theirs, all they saw were the benefits in your and Uncle Caleb's hands."
David suddenly felt she was right.
All these years, he thought the family was happy and harmonious, but it was just his perception!
Sensing David's low spirits, Abella couldn't help but say, "Grandpa, don't be sad. You've already fulfilled your responsibilities and duties as an elder brother. It's they who failed to be good younger brothers. If you don't educate them, should you let them continue making mistakes?"
Abella analyzed. "Ordinary people's mistakes might be telling a small lie or making a minor error, which is harmless. But their mistakes could cost several lives. If you don't take this seriously and let them repeat their mistakes, you'll lose the whole family, and they won't be sad. They'll just trample over our bodies to spend the money, unrestrained by the law."
Abella was right. If he didn't take this seriously, it would be like trading his family's lives for a few false brotherly affections. He couldn't and wouldn't do that!
"Abella, you're a good kid. Thanks for helping me see clearly." If he had felt any reluctance or hesitation before, it was all gone now.
"Grandpa, you figured it out yourself. Otherwise, no amount of persuasion would have worked." Abella raised her drink.
David couldn't drink alcohol, so he opened another drink and clinked glasses with her.
He suddenly realized that Abella had a lot of charisma and was much more outstanding than her peers, a talent worth nurturing.
Outside the operating room, Bonnie put on her best heartbroken act. "Caleb, Dad's been in there forever. I'm really worried."
Before she even finished, she pretended to faint.
"Bonnie." Caleb quickly stepped forward to catch her. "Don't worry, with Abella and the other doctors in there, they'll find a way to save Dad."
Bonnie kept up her fainting act in his arms.
"Bonnie, Bonnie?" Caleb knew she was exhausted and probably came up with this idea to get some rest. If she fainted, she could sleep in his arms.
Caleb didn't smile but held her and sat on a bench, covering her with his coat. His eyes were filled with endless sadness and worry.
Ulysses couldn't help but ask, "Does Abella know medicine? Can she perform surgery on David?"
"Yeah, how old is she? What's going on?" Derek was also hearing this for the first time.
Caleb, holding Bonnie on the bench, said coldly, "Dad woke up thanks to Abella."
Ulysses and Derek were shocked that Abella was so capable. So many famous doctors couldn't cure David, but she could wake him up?
"Is she studying medicine? Why haven't we heard Kimberly mention it before?" Derek was worried. If Abella really knew medicine and was skilled, it would be troublesome.
Thinking of this, he glanced at Ulysses, who also showed a hint of worry.
In the operating room, Abella looked up at David and said, "Oh, there's one more thing I haven't told you, Grandpa. When I examined you earlier, I found your body was very weak, not due to illness but because someone had been poisoning you for a long time. I didn't tell anyone at the time because I wanted to catch the person secretly."
Later, she accidentally discovered that Gregory from Caleb's house was suspicious.
"My medicine was always given to me by Gregory," David said, "I heard from Caleb that you saw through Gregory's plot and saved me a few days ago."
Abella nodded. "I guessed it was Gregory who poisoned you, but he had no personal grudge against you and followed the orders of the Wolf Clique, which is under Grandpa Ulysses and Grandpa Derek's control."
David smiled bitterly, finding it hard to believe his brothers would treat him like this behind his back.
"It's about time." Abella checked the time and called a few doctors and nurses from the side door.
In the area where several operating rooms were connected, there was a large resting area where the doctors and nurses who were in on the act waited, giving Abella and David enough time alone.
Abella called them in, and after they changed into sterile clothes and quickly tidied up the scene, she had someone open the operating room door.
Bonnie had been asleep for half an hour. Caleb saw the door open and gently called to her, "Bonnie, Dad is out. The surgery is over."
Bonnie groggily opened her eyes. "Dad is out? Where is he? What did Abella say? Is he okay?"
Ulysses and Derek rushed forward, concerned. "Abella, how is your grandpa? Is he in any danger?"
"Why hasn't he woken up? Is it serious?"
Yancy and Jerold also rushed forward, feigning concern.
"Grandpa was shocked. We've done our best. Whether he wakes up depends on his willpower."
