Chapter 9
Surprised, Abella raised her clear eye and wondered who Phillipe was as he was more than generous.
The crowd looked at her with either surprise or envy.
Receiving a blank check not only meant instant wealth but also gaining Phillipe's approval, which promised many future opportunities. It seemed that Abella was incredibly fortunate and had a bright future ahead.
"Then I'll graciously accept," Abella said with a smile, putting the check into her white coat pocket without any hesitation. The straightforward and efficient action was favorable in others' eyes.
"Ryan will be off the ventilator by tomorrow," Abella said, gaining a scoff from the corner. It was Aurora.
Abella immediately spotted her. She walked over unhurriedly and stared at her coldly. "Dr. Robinson, it's time to fulfill your promise."
Aurora was reminded of their bet.
She thought, 'Phillipe is right here. I can't let her make me look bad! No way!'
She brazenly shrugged. "What promise? I don't know what you're talking about."
"Dr. Robinson, how could you?" The young nurse beside her couldn't help but speak up, "You said that if this young lady could save Sir Bourbon, you would kneel and even give up your deputy director position."
"Did I? Did I say that?" Aurora refused to admit it. "Do you have proof?"
Her shameless denial angered another doctor. "You did say it. Everyone here heard it. If you don't want to kneel, at least apologize to her."
After all, she had been really mean to Abella earlier.
"Why should I apologize?" Aurora was unabashed with an arrogant look as she believed there was nothing they could do.
Everyone was at a loss for how to deal with her.
Abella swiftly kicked at Aurora and Aurora fell to her knees with a thud.
No one saw how Abella did it. When they realized she had moved, they only heard the sound of Aurora's knees hitting the ground.
"Brat..." Aurora's lips trembled with pain and she was unable to stand up.
"As a doctor, saving lives is your duty." Abella's gaze was cold and her voice carried a chill. "The scalpel in your hand is for saving lives! You treat patients' lives carelessly. You're unfit to practice medicine!"
"You..." Aurora shivered with anger. "Don't you think that you can slander me in front of Mr. Bourbon. I did nothing wrong!"
"Everyone here knows what you had done and what you wanted to do!"
At that moment, Dean Herbert Clark arrived after hearing the news. "Mr. Bourbon, is Sir Bourbon alright? I'm sorry. I just got back from an academic conference. What's going on here? Aurora, why are you kneeling on the ground?"
Once she saw Herbert, Aurora's eyes welled up with tears.
She was about to complain when Herbert exclaimed in surprise.
"Abella, you're here too? And you're in sterile clothes? You...You're the high school student who operated on Sir Bourbon, aren't you? I heard about it on my way back. I believe Sir Bourbon is alright now, right?"
Everyone was shocked by his words.
Not only did Herbert know Abella, but he also seemed to highly regard her medical skills.
"Hello, Uncle Clark," Abella greeted him. "It's not a big deal. However, I don't want to see her in this field anymore."
Herbert's gaze shifted from Aurora to Abella. "What did Aurora do to make you so angry?"
"I'm not angry." Abella looked at Aurora, a dark glint in her eyes. "It's the first time I've heard of a heart failure patient with endocarditis and paravalvular leak being given cardiac sedative and antisterone."
"Administering those would kill the patient in less than half an hour!" Herbert immediately turned to look at Aurora.
Abella sneered, "It just shows your hospital's hiring standards are too low."
"Aurora, what exactly happened?" Herbert immediately questioned.
"Dr. Clark, Sir Bourbon's condition was very critical at the time. We had no choice."
"Cardiac sedative and antisterone shouldn't be your choice no matter what. You knew that would be a death sentence for the patient! As a doctor, you sentenced the patient to death when there was still hope! How could you do that?"
Utterly disappointed, Herbert didn't give Aurora a chance to make more excuses and said, "Quit. NYU Medical Center will not keep you. You are no longer allowed in this field."
"Dr. Clark, please give me another chance. Dr. Clark..." Aurora realized the severity of the situation and pleaded pitifully.
In this hospital, she had a high salary, friendly coworkers, and a bright future.
She thought, 'It's all this brat's fault!
'Now, my future is ruined! I hate her!'
"Take her away!" Herbert said before turning to Phillipe to apologize. "I'm deeply sorry and ashamed that the hospital has allowed such an incident on my watch. Fortunately, Abella acted in time to prevent a disaster!"
"What's your name?" Phillipe's gaze fell on Abella, his voice clear.
Abella responded confidently, "Abella Medici."
"Give me your phone number." Phillipe handed out his phone, indicating for her to put in her number.
Abella understood his intention when she received his blank check. If Ryan had any issues later, she would be responsible. He needed her contact information to find her in time.
She took Phillipe's phone. Her slender fingers tapped a few times and she returned the phone to him.
"The patient has had multiple open-heart surgeries. Postoperative early sternal instability will make healing difficult. His left leg will also experience swelling and pain due to multiple cannulations during extracorporeal circulation. These are normal conditions."
Looking at Abella's clear face, Phillipe asked in a deep voice, "How to reduce the pain?"
Abella glanced at the team of heart specialists behind him. "They can handle these small problems. Uncle Clark, if there's nothing else, I'll be leaving now."
"Okay..."
In the changing room, Abella changed out of her sterile clothes, put on a baseball cap, and slung her backpack over her shoulder. Walking out of the changing room, she was about to leave the hospital.
"Abella!" Someone suddenly called out to her in the hospital corridor.
