Chapter 625 Unexpected
"Can you let me know before you go somewhere next time?" Winston's eyes were red, and his voice was hoarse.
Nicole wiped his tears. "You're all grown up and still crying?"
Her touch made it worse; his tears kept falling, and he sounded hurt. "Why didn't you answer the phone?"
He looked at her with red eyes.
Every missed call made his heart sink more.
"I don't even know where my phone is." She hadn't touched it since waking up.
"Then where did you go?" Winston held her as they got into the elevator, drawing attention.
There were several people in the elevator, and Nicole didn't answer.
Winston continued, "Look at you, wearing so little. It's snowing, and you're not fully recovered. What if you catch a cold? Wherever you want to go, I can go with you. Whatever you want to do, I can do it with you. But disappearing like this..." His heart couldn't take it.
"Do you know how worried I was when I came back with breakfast and found the ward empty? I asked the nurses, and they hadn't seen you. I called, and your phone was off. I didn't know where to find you."
A nearby woman was moved to tears. "Miss, this is your fault. This young man is so handsome and cares so much about you. Don't break his heart. Where can you find such a good man?"
"Yes, a man who treats you so well, willing to hold you like this in public and care about you with every word, is really hard to find," another woman added. "If you don't cherish him, many others will. You should hold on to him."
Nicole felt embarrassed and didn't know what to say.
Winston quickly said, "Thank you both for your kind words. I still have many shortcomings to improve."
The elevator door dinged open, and Winston thanked the two women. He then asked Nicole, "You still haven't told me where you went."
"The morgue," Nicole replied.
Winston was surprised. "I've been there too. Did you go while I was getting breakfast?"
So they missed each other?
"Yes." Nicole thought he wouldn't be back so soon, so she wanted to see her foster parents.
Seeing their tragic state, she felt oppressed and wanted some fresh air and to look at the snow.
She didn't expect him to be so anxious.
Seeing his red eyes, Nicole felt heartbroken. "I was only gone for a little while, and you're like this. What if..."
What if she couldn't be saved?
What if the antidote wasn't developed or wasn't taken in time?
What would he do then?
Winston thought her "what if" meant leaving him.
He placed Nicole on the hospital bed, propped his hands on the edge, and looked at her with red eyes, closely examining her. "Did you hear what my parents said to me?"
"Yes." Nicole didn't deny it and quietly looked at him.
"So you're planning to leave? Like last time, leaving me behind? Never letting me find you again?" Winston looked into her eyes, feeling hurt and even aggrieved. "You know I can't live without you. What would I do if you left? Have you ever thought about my feelings? When you left me like trash last time, did you think I would be sad, that I would miss you?"
Seeing his tears fall again, Nicole reached out to wipe them, but Winston turned away, sulking. "If you really cared about me, you wouldn't think about leaving."
Nicole's hand froze mid-air.
"Still not wiping?" Winston looked back at her.
At a loss for words, Nicole reached out again, but Winston caught her hand.
"Pulling out the IV on your own, Abella worked so hard to save you, and you don't take care of yourself, running outside in the cold."
"Are you done?"
"No," Winston said, looking into her eyes angrily. "Do you think I can't find you if you leave without a word? Even if it takes ten, twenty, thirty years, I'll find you until you have nowhere to hide."
He emphasized each word. "Listen, no matter what happens, I will never let go of your hand. I'll persuade my parents. Once the dangers are gone, they won't oppose us. Give me some time, trust me."
Nicole looked at his sincere expression and stayed silent.
"I'm also very sad about your adoptive parents. I know you feel guilty about Clara's death. What we can do now is avenge them, comfort the Wrens, and bring these bad people to justice so no one else gets hurt."
She remembered Patricia once telling her that parents would do anything to protect their children. They just wanted their kids to live well; otherwise, how could they be worthy of their parents' sacrifice?
Nicole looked into Winston's eyes and said gently, "I didn't plan to leave."
Winston was surprised.
"I just wanted to go to the morgue to see them," Nicole's eyes dimmed. "I didn't want to cry in front of you or make you worry."
So she went to the morgue alone and cried her heart out.
When she was young, Fred taught her not to be weak and never to cry. During training, no matter how much blood she shed or how badly she was injured, she gritted her teeth and never let a tear fall.
But today, seeing her adoptive parents' bodies, she couldn't hold back. She missed them so much and wished they could come back to life.
"It's normal for your parents not to accept me. As parents, they want their children to live a safe and peaceful life. I understand. If it were my child, I wouldn't allow them to be with someone with a complicated background either. I don't blame them." Nicole's words surprised Winston even more.
"I will do my best to gain their approval," Nicole said seriously, looking into his eyes. "My parents haven't been buried yet. I haven't personally avenged them and Clara, so I can't leave. I can't let those people get close to the Wrens, get close to you."
Standing at the door, Abella heard this, smiled, and walked towards the attending physician's office.
The attending physician saw her coming and, as if seeing an important figure in the medical field, immediately stood up to greet her, "Dr. Medici, you're here? Please come in and have a seat!"
