Chapter 720 Competing with Abella

Half an hour later, Lola heard a car pull up outside and bolted out to check. Sure enough, Bonnie and the crew were back.

David was chilling in a wheelchair, with Abella pushing him along. Caleb was holding Bonnie's hand. Seeing them like that, Lola thought they looked more like a family than ever.

"Grandpa, Uncle Caleb, Aunt Bonnie, Abella, you're finally back!" Lola grinned.

"It's so late, why aren't you in bed?" Caleb asked, noticing her thin pajamas. "Come inside, it's freezing out here."

Lola had ditched her cozy robe for something skimpy, just to get some attention from her family.

Seeing her plan worked, she smiled and said, "I'm fine. You all must be wiped out after tonight. Abella, let me help you out."

She also wanted to score some points with David.

"No need." Abella brushed her off, pushing the wheelchair past her without a second glance.

Lola's face fell.

"Let's go inside." Bonnie patted her back.

Lola clung to her arm and said, "Aunt Bonnie, how was Grandpa Derek's birthday party tonight? Spill the tea!"

"It was alright." Bonnie smiled. "There were some fun bits, like a clown show and some singing."

"That sounds so cool!" Lola felt a mix of envy and anger that Bonnie hadn't taken her along.

"But honestly, the performances were lame, and the singing was off-key. At least Abella and I thought so." Bonnie laughed. "It's a good thing you didn't go. There were some wild moments that would've freaked you out."

Lola couldn't help but feel bitter. 'How does Bonnie know I would cry? It's so unfair not to take me to such a fun party!'

"Alright, wash up and hit the sack," Bonnie said, looking tired as she prepared to go upstairs with Caleb.

But Lola whined, "Grandpa just got better, and I haven't had a chance to talk to him. I'll just pop in for a sec."

"Tomorrow will be fine."

Lola pouted. "What if he's whisked away again tomorrow, and I don't get to see him?"

Bonnie laughed and looked at Caleb. "She's blaming you for taking her grandpa away."

"No, I just miss Grandpa."

"Then see him and rest early. Your grandpa is tired too; he's had a rough night." Bonnie didn't spell it out, but to Lola, it sounded like David and Abella had been through a lot together, and she, as an outsider, might mess things up.

"I get it. Aunt Bonnie and Uncle Caleb, you should rest early too." Lola forced a smile, but inside, she was fuming.

After a bit, she walked to David's room and knocked on the door.

To her surprise, Abella opened it.

Lola's eyes widened. "What are you doing in Grandpa's room? I need to talk to him."

"He's about to sleep. Whatever you have to say, say it tomorrow." Abella was about to close the door, but Lola quickly stopped her. "I just want to see Grandpa and say a few words. Are you seriously gonna stop me?"

"I said, he's resting."

"It won't take long!" Lola pushed against the door, struggling with Abella, but it was clear she couldn't match Abella's strength. The contrast between Abella's ease and Lola's effort was glaring.

"Is this really necessary?" Lola glared at Abella. "I just want to talk to Grandpa. What are you so scared of?"

"Scared?" Abella raised an eyebrow. "Shouldn't you be the one who's scared?"

"What do I have to be scared of?" Lola, feeling a bit guilty, shot back, "You're just worried that if Grandpa and I get closer, he'll like me more than you."

Abella chuckled. "You think I'd be scared of that?"

Just then, a tired voice came from inside the room. "Abella, what's going on?"

Abella raised her voice slightly. "Grandpa, Lola wants to see you and has something to say."

"Tell her to go back and talk tomorrow." David's voice sounded weary. "You come over here."

Abella glanced at Lola and closed the door.

Standing at the door, Lola couldn't believe that in just one night, David had become more dependent on Abella!

He'd rather have Abella stay with him than his granddaughter of eighteen years!

Was it just because Abella shared the same bloodline with him that he could forget all the love he had shown her over the past eighteen years?

Lola clenched her fists. 'It must be because Abella has said something to Grandpa! She knows medicine and must have used some hypnotic techniques, making everyone in the family biased towards her and like her! Abella is so despicable!'

A gust of wind blew in through the slightly open window, making Lola shiver. She remembered the thick robe she had taken off was in her room and angrily went back.

Abella came to David's side and continued with the treatment, "Just two more needles, and you'll be able to sleep well, Grandpa."

"I felt like I couldn't breathe just now, my head was killing me, and I was so irritable. But after a few needles from you, I feel much better." Lying in bed, David's mind wandered back to the events of the night.

"Don't think about tonight's events, Grandpa. What you need to do now is relax and get a good night's sleep," Abella said as she continued with the treatment, "In a couple of days, Grandma will come to see you. If she finds you looking weak and tired, she'll be worried."

"Really?" David's eyes showed a hint of surprise and joy. "Did she tell you that? She's coming to see me?"

Since waking up tonight, he had been taken by Caleb to attend Derek's birthday party and hadn't had time to contact Vanessa.

"If you don't believe me, you can call Grandma tomorrow." Abella smiled. "She'll be very happy to hear your voice."

"I'll call her first thing in the morning. I haven't seen her in a long time."

To be honest, he missed her a lot.

Since falling ill, he and Vanessa had been forced to live apart, seeking medical treatment everywhere.

Abella reminded, "Grandpa, your body is just recovering. You shouldn't experience extreme emotions. When you talk to Grandma tomorrow, keep your emotions in check."

"Alright, alright." David smiled, feeling much better.

After finishing the treatment, Abella put away the needles one by one and placed an aromatherapy diffuser on his bedside table. "This will help you sleep. Rest well, and I'll see you tomorrow."

"Alright, Abella, thank you." David was already feeling drowsy and soon drifted off to sleep.
