Chapter 546 Hung Up by Steven

"Lola," Steven's gentle voice came through the phone.

Lola gripped her phone, feeling a bit nervous.

She always felt nervous and pressured when calling Steven.

"Steven, I heard you're going to a charity gala next Monday and need a date. My friend is free. Want to go together?"

"No need," Steven replied calmly. "I already have someone in mind."

Lola thought, 'Could it be Abigail? Bringing her to such a high-end event will embarrass the Medici family and Steven.'

Seeing the short-haired heiress clasping her hands together in a pleading gesture, Lola said, "Do you have time in the next couple of days? I want to have a meal with you."

Steven sensed her intentions and said calmly, "Are you very free lately? Is your coursework light?"

"Steven, I just want to have a meal with you," Lola hurriedly said. "I haven't seen you in a long time."

"Don't have thoughts you shouldn't. If you're too free, I'll get you a few more tutors."

"Steven."

"I'm in a meeting."

Steven hung up, sitting at the conference table with a cold gaze.

Lola hadn't expected to be hung up on by Steven and Blake in one day!

Seeing the short-haired heiress's expectant look, Lola lied, "Steven said he'll ask his assistant about his schedule. When he has time, I'll bring you along to have a meal with him."

"Really?" The short-haired heiress was overjoyed, hugging Lola. "That's great! I knew you would have a way!"

Lola smiled on the surface but had no idea how to trick Steven into having a meal with her.

Meanwhile, Elsa had just shaken off her reverie when her phone rang.

It was Margaret calling.

"Elsa, I heard Clarence is in Nuw Yark. Grandpa Francis said he could help us make a connection tonight. Come home now, I'll have the driver pick you up. Dress up nicely and meet him at the coffee room tonight. Try to play a game with him. Remember, don't embarrass him, but don't seem too foolish either. You need to strike the right balance."

She needed to catch Clarence's attention and make him think she was a promising talent. Only then would she have a chance to gain his favor and guidance.

"Mom, I don't want to go."

Elsa was already feeling down, and Margaret's call only added to her frustration.

Margaret, sitting in her garden at home, elegantly sipped her coffee and asked nonchalantly, "What's wrong?"

Go had always been Elsa's pride, but now, it seemed she was discouraged.

"Mr. Wodehouse came to Innovation University today, and I lost to Abella in front of him."

"What did you say?" Margaret paused her coffee-drinking, her eyes filled with disbelief.

"Abella is very good at Go. Mr. Wodehouse said he's known her for over ten years and that he taught her how to play Go. He even suggested in front of everyone that Abella consider inheriting his legacy."

Elsa briefly recounted what happened today, not forgetting to complain a bit.

"Mom, do you think Abella's out of her mind? Such a big opportunity, and she doesn't appreciate it. Either she's really dumb or just playing hard to get, thinking she's special."

Maybe she really thought she was something special, always acting superior and disdainful.

"Fool," Margaret said, pouring another cup of coffee. "Why do you think Mr. Wodehouse brought up the inheritance in front of everyone?"

"What else? He wanted everyone to know Abella has him as her backer and shouldn't be messed with!" Elsa said, getting angrier. She couldn't understand why Clarence had chosen her.

Margaret replied, "No, his real purpose was to put pressure on Abella indirectly. He was sure she wouldn't embarrass him by refusing in front of everyone, so he brought it up on purpose."

But Abella had neither accepted nor refused, just changed the subject. Margaret found this girl quite interesting, handling the situation like that.

"She's not stupid. Either she has so many good opportunities she can't take them all, or she has her own ability and doesn't need anyone else's."

In Margaret's view, Abella was someone who kept a low profile. She had warned Elsa before not to provoke her easily. With Elsa's abilities, she couldn't compete with her.

In today's situation, her other backer, Clarence, appeared in front of everyone. How many more backers did she have that hadn't appeared? No one knew.

"But Mom, I don't understand why Mr. Wodehouse chose her?"

Elsa thought she had some talent in chess. Her previous teachers had praised her as smart and capable, saying she had a bright future in the Go world. If she had received Clarence's guidance from a young age, for ten years, she wouldn't be any worse than Abella now!

"Sometimes, the right time, place, and people are all necessary," Margaret insisted. "Come back, and try again tonight."

Such a good opportunity was in front of them; they couldn't give up easily. Abella hadn't given Clarence a definite answer yet, so he could still look for a better candidate. Nothing was set in stone.

Elsa didn't have to be better than Abella, but if she had talent and was diligent, why would Clarence refuse? Even if she couldn't be a direct disciple, getting Clarence's guidance was more than enough.

After hearing Margaret's words, Elsa felt it made sense. "I'll come back now."

As she passed backstage, she saw Lola surrounded by friends, basking in their attention. Lola was in a good mood, but then she received a message from Maria, learning that Blake had given the concert tickets to Abella. She almost dropped her phone.

Maria: [Mrs. Medici wanted a ticket for her friend's daughter. She called Mr. Blake Medici, and he said he had already given it away. When she asked, she found out it was given to Abella.]

"Lola, why do you look so pale? Do you need to see the school nurse?"

"Are you okay? Your smile looks a bit forced. If you're not feeling well, don't push yourself."

"Let me take you to the school nurse?"
